Intel cuts quad-core price by 50 percent

I just ordered my Retail Q6600 G0 from Frys online Friday. Ground shipping by DHL and it was friggin delivered to my door today. Now that's not bad at all for $179 + $7 s/h and I live in New Hampshire, thats not exactly next door to these guys.

*edit* and I'm really looking forward to OC'ing with this new cpu. I'll be tickled with 3.2ghz, anything past that is just gravy

That Q6700 becomes really tempting now compared to a Q9450.

this is good and bad...
good for us (yay)
bad for amd...
and where would the world be without amd?
competition is a good thing, amd might be allowed to go out of business...
(i mean look at the bank bailouts these days)

Maybe Intel is scared of what AMD has in developement and is trying really hard to put them in a coffin.

What would it take for Intel to come up with a much better architechture than the Core2?

Look how long it took them to overcome AMD after AMD came out with the Athlon.

Intel won't try to put AMD out of business. They need someone to compete with to keep the antitrust lawyers at bay. Intel is in a comfortable position right now so these price cuts are more to get old product out of the channel than compete with AMD in a new price segment. I think we'll see more of Intel pushing back product launches (as we saw with Yorkfield and Wolfdale) than anything else.

Agreed, they just want AMD on continuous life support. ;)

This was announced a couple of months back. Hence the $200 Q6600s ever since then. the Q6700 was so horrendously over priced, I am surprised they waited this long to cut the price.

Doh, I forgot, they were milking the OEM's. :D

The Q6600 is still a better deal right now. Just not as big a slam dunk as it used to be.

for me personally, a decent (read even low end q6600 or q9300) will last 3 or 4 years. I suspect that most people who don't play games will be able to use one of those an equal amount of time. I mean lets face it, in the real world, thats a LOT of cpu.

what really is the difference between the Xeon and the regular quad core?

hopefully this causes AMD to cut their prices on tri-cores to realistic levels...$120 or so

I was about to order a 8400 then I saw this I wonder when the online stores are going to get the 8300 I havent seen anyone with it yet.

So Intel's current line up worth considering would be:

Any place sell the Q9450 yet? I think I'm ready to build my new PC now. I was waiting for the Egg to get it in stock, but it looks like I have to go elsewhere.

dont get it unless you love wasting money

Hmm. Matter of opinion I suppose. It would be wasting money for me to buy a CPU to hold me over until the Q9450 came down in price. Everybody has their limits though. To me, wasting money is buying a QX9770.

So are they available anywhere?

its definately a G0? I see its going for 199 right not + 6 shipping... clubits at 223 + free shipping... and neweggs at 219.99... now if G0 was a guaranteed thing from frys id go for it, but that extra 15$ for a guaranteed G0 might still be worth it.

people agree that 6600 > 6700 just not by as large a margin?

The likelihood of getting a B3 from any retail outlet is very slim. Especially from Fry's who move things out rather fast, I doubt they'd have any B3's left in circulation. "Guaranteed G0" is about as valuable as a router that is labeled as "windows vista ready" at this point.

just picked up a Q6700 for £175 from scan, roughly half what it cost last week. :D

Article is misleading, it seems to say Intel cut Quadcores price by 50%, but they only did on a very old cpu. I was thinking like the Q6600 would be like $99, or the 9450 like $175.
