Has anyone with a dell m1530 (or m1330) experienced premature wearing of the wrist support paint (actually, it's a clear coat)?

I've had an M1530 for about 3 months now and already the wrist support is all worn away from my wrist resting on it while I type. I've used an IBM thinkpad for years and never had an issue with the plastic wearing down and becoming smooth, but 3 months into this laptop, and a lot less use than the IBM, it's all worn down. that's pretty gay in my opinion...

You should Rhinoline your wrist rests. I guarantee the rests will never wear out again. I can't say the same for your wrists, though... ;)

You went the exact opposite direction I did. I just moved from a Dell to a ThinkPad. I think you're going backwards :p. Sorry to hear that about the laptop though.

I've got a m1330, had it for a couple months and I haven't had that issue... Although I don't use the laptop a whole lot...

Do you wear a watch while you use it?

The IBM was a work laptop. This Dell is my personal one. I like the IBMs, but since they went over to Lenovo I've been a bit annoyed at the step down in quality, and they were way more than I wanted to pay. I like my m1530, but this wrist support thing is annoying.... and I hate the trackpad.

No, I don't wear a watch. my wrist resting against it and my body's oils are what's degrading it. still though. I only use the thing for 2, maybe 3 hours a day. I'm considering taking the wrist support part off the laptop, stripping it down to bare metal, and then applying the most durable clearcoat I can find. I have nowhere to spray it though :(

Step down in quality? Lenovo is the one responsible for the magnesium-alloy "rollcage" in ThinPads, they are the ones who started using carbon fiber reinforced plastic, they brought back the tablet, they added the keyboard drain holes...the list, I'm sure, goes on.

I will admit that when Lenovo took over I was worried about changes in quality, but I assure you that the new ThinkPads are just as good (if not better) than the old ones. Maybe you compared and old T series to an R series?

that's good news. It's entirely possible that the ones I was working with were a crappy batch. Either way, the IBMs just didn't offer me what I was looking for in a laptop, especially price.

But we've gone off topic here...

yea your right sorry about that did you try to contact Dell to see if they would send you a new wrist pice?? I use to work for them and they usualy do that free of charge. They may even have something you can buy from them if its just plastics it could only cost you 20 bucks or so.

no, I haven't contacted them yet. I'll probably call them this week. I'm just concerned that the new one will wear away just as fast.

When you call them ask them if there are any "new revisions" for the part in question they may have already identified that as an issue and made changes.

Not sure what you mean as both the 1530 and 1330 use brushed aluminum and not plastic. I am not sure how it wearing out? I have had my 1330 for about 5 months and no issues but it does get dirty after a while.

yes, it is aluminum, however they have covered the aluminum in a clear coat. it's the clear coat that is wearing away, thus making a noticeable dull spot.

yeah i'd try and get dell to replace it under warranty, I've seen them do it before... it shouldn't wear away prematurely...

if you get a replacement part I might suggest something like an invisa-bra... clear plastic adhesive that's rather durable

oh, that's exactly what i need. too bad it looks like there's no version for the m1530 just yet. soon I hope.

the m1330 is physically smaller, so it wouldn't fit right. I sent them a message asking about the 1530, so we'll see what they say.

So! Prince Precious. did they ever get back to you about having one available for your laptop? or nothing at all?

They have nothing available yet. They didn't say anything about having one available in the near-future, but who knows. I still have to call dell about it. I'm lazy... :p

well now, that's kind of poor on their part. you emailed them asking about it and they never emailed you back informing you that it's on the site now. seems like something they might have wanted to do. considering you were willing to buy one if they had it.
