SOYO 24" DYLM24D6 Official Thread

The only problem I'm having is the greys look slightly different on each monitor, most colors are 99% the same, just greys are messed up... which can be annoying D=

what in the world are you guys doing with two 24" screens? Can't game on them...Can't look at more than one thing at once usually.

Unless you are doing some sort of server monitoring where you need alerting windows open all over the place. A 24" monitor is big enough for 2 normal windows side by side. Heck I can even have four 800x600 Virtual PC's open at once on the same desktop space. I just can't see why you need two monitors with a 24". Two 19's - sure. Two 24's? wow...maybe just for bragging rights ;)

Same reason I always ran dual monitors, when idle I usually have the TV tuner or movie going on fullscreen in the left while I run a browser/word/photoshop in the right. And yes granted you are not working a videogame, you can work both with no problem. Its not for bragging rights, specially considering how cheap these 24" were. 2x30", now that would take the cake.

I actually have a third 24" but thats for another computer. Its just allot more flexible to have more monitors than using a low res TV thats fixed into that function. Besides, TV is staying in the Livingroom :p

HD Video editing... main editing stuff on the left, audio/video tracks / all the project files... full-size preview on the right screen..

When you're editing 30+ hours of stuff it's nice :)

You guys think getting a refurb P-MVA version of this would be wise? I've seen a couple sites with refurbs of them on sale. Are they worth it (assuming a lower price than retail, of course).

You mean geeks.com? If you're only saving $20 I don't think it would be worth it... but if it was like $50-75 then yea if you're strapped for cash.

I won a $30 off $150 coupon on ebay for $2 and it worked on an online order and basically saved me tax + a little bit more...

Yeah, but continually returning/exchanging these 3ms boxed units and testing for P-MVA or TN is a PITA. My guess is these geeks.com ones _must_ be P-MVA (unless the new TNs are all so messed up that they've gone back to Soyo to get refurbed already).

I've looked all over my city's OM locations to find a 6ms box. No luck. The sale ends today, too :( But I'm sure it'll be on sale cheaper later :D

Yea they might repeat the sale next week, usually it's on/off for 1 week, but they did 2 weeks this last time

Who knoes

Quick question for you guys, do you guys notice a bit of tearing on this monitor? I notice it on my desktop and in fps games. Vsyn has helped with a few games but games like counter strike vsync messes up the mouse and in this game I notice the most tearing.

I believe tearing is what its called, where the edges kinda get choppy and flicker a bit.

Still trying to dial the monitor in, I cannot for the life of me find good settings for gaming. Any good software out there for calibrating this monitor?

Also I notice some studdering when I move app's around on desktop and I notice it slightly in games, would this be considered input lag?

Sorry, I am new to all of this

I've never noticed any tearing at all, although I only play MMORPGs (Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online) and turn-based strategy games.

No. Tearing is when you turn fast and half the screen updates faster than the other half, so the image "tears" down a horizontal line. It's most common in FPS.

What you're describing it's the monitor's fault, but sounds like some issue with your graphics card and either texture filtering / LOD bias, or AA. Hard to say.

Ahh I see, well the video card is a new 9800gtx and I am running the most current driver for it.

I have no idea what els it could be..

Set everything in the Nvidia control panel to "high quality" possible and "negative LOD bias" to "clamp".

I set the quality to the highest it can go, will try setting the rest.

*Update*

Still the same results after trying that out, could this be a driver issue? I can notice it quite a bit on the desktop.

...on the desktop...

Are you using the DVI cable included with the monitor? Cause it's trash. Replace it. You can get a cable for ~$15 shipped from Monoprice.com

Using an aftermarket dvi to dvi cable I got off newegg that had good reviews, yeah the one that came with the monitor doesnt look that good.

I think I paid more like $10 shipped for mine from Monoprice.

Either way, that doesn't sound like the monitor is doing that, have you tried it on other computers?

Yea I might try to call customer service and see if I can get $20 back :D

Although I really doubt it, might as well try...

Just grabbed one from my local OfficeMax. Manufacturing date of October 2007 and box says 6ms. Hooked it up and it definitely looks like PMVA panel. Awesome!

Not really a lottery if you can see the box says 6ms :)

And I called customer service, my order had to be within 2 weeks to get the price difference... lame... Every other store I know of is 30 days... :(

return and buy again? ;)

I used a $30 coupon, ordered online, and you have to return it within 14 days...

That's the idea, you can get the price-difference if you were able to return/rebuy without any issues. saves both sides the hassle.

Blazestorm brought up something interesting on the Soyo 26" thread that I'd like to know.

Who of the people who ordered the DYLM24D6 online at officemax.com recently (as in the last 2 weeks or so) got a 6ms box? Who got the 3ms box with a P-MVA screen? Blazestorm's theory might be right: The shipping warehouse may have older stock than the stores, who only can carry 3-4 at a time. Probably a good gamble for those still looking for the 6ms box but can't find one at the OMs in your area.

How do you guys get deep blacks? I notice that my blacks seem "greyish" the overall monitor seems like it has a shade of white shining. I turned the high light off and it helped but it still didnt fix it, this is really noticeable when viewing at an angle.

Still trying to figure out my graphical issues, I hooked up my old crt and it was perfect:confused:

If I can get my colors right and fix my video issues then I think I finally found a keeper.

You sure you have a *VA screen and not a TN?

Turn down the brightness, I get nice blacks running like 25 contrast, 40 brightness on one monitor and 30 contrast, 40 brightness on the other, with some different settings under color..

Also try switching the color to "user" instead of 6500k... and adjusting them to get the colors right... I found about 40's on all 3 to be best for my 2 soyos...

Gave it a shot and it looked really bad and washed out, I just cant get the right calibration for the life of me. The colors look washed out by a "white" reflective light it seems and whenever I move my head it gets worse even tho I turned the brightness down.

It actually gets worse as I turn it down, I dont think its a defective monitor as I have two of them and there doing the same thing.

Will continue toying around with this monitor

It does sound more like a calibration issue rather than a defect, but it could be a defect.

Maybe swap one out at first, and if you still see it, it's really unlikely you got 3 bad ones.. but who knows.

I just bought a Doublesight 26" S-IPS monitor just a few days ago for $700.00 at Newegg. I also just also picked up two brand new Soyo 24" Topaz monitors at OfficeMax today, they were the last ones and on sale for $279.00 each! I just wanted to see how different these two budget monitors were in performance. The Soyo's I picked up are definately the good VA screen versions, the screens don't change color when viewing them at angles but the contrast definately shifts a bit (to be expected).

To make a quick comparison: the DoubleSight colors are spectacular compared to the SOYO, there is just more there to see, better gradations, and wider color range. The viewing angles are incredible on the DS as well. It's just like looking at a good flat screen CRT - the picture doesn't change at all from where ever you look.

The Soyo in comparison to the DS is not a HUGE. One thing I like about the SOYO is being able to view images without the horizontal bands that are apparent on S-IPS monitors. They appear in the backround and can be distracting when photo editing. The Soyos don't have this artifact.

With that said, I'm still not 100% convinced if it's worth spending more than double(no pun intended) the money for the wider range of colors the DoubleSight gives me. I do graphic design design work for a living and occational photo editing as hobby, but most of my work is going to be viewed on regular monitors with the same or similar pallet of colors.

By the way, speaking of colors, does anyone know what the actual percent of color gamut that is covered on the Soyo VA version?

Anyway, my one gripe with SOYO is the warranty, if one of them dies or becomes defective, it will most likely be rpelaced by a TN version and that sucks...so it's something I'm considering in which to keep.

Are there any other graphic pros out there using these monitors for design work?

Loving mine so far.. The right screen has more red than my left.. both are *VA for sure and made in the same month (2007.11 on the back of both panels). I'm sure I just need to get a colormeter/lightmeter to make them match perfectly. Even then, they look very close and amazing!

awesome. i had that same desk once :)

what keyboard/mouse is that? looks like logitech

Just wanted to show the difference between TN and P-MVA versions of SOYO.
I got both. I returned the TN version. The difference was astounding, especially when looking at a black screen, the TN version turns to grey at even a slight angle from perpendicular.

I picked one of these up from Office Max today.

I set it up side by side against my 24" Westy from Sam's ($300 version).

Lets just say right now the Westy is back in its box headed back to the store.

I have a 2007.11 version. The screen doesn't appear anything like a TN Panel. Viewing angle makes a tremendous difference! This doesn't hurt my eyes at all, even at 8" from the screen.

I could spend twice this much and probably wouldn't be as happy. Hope it holds out for a year or two.
