I am so frustrated right now

What EXACT screwdriver do I need to remove these screws?

Um are you serious? Try a #1 Phillips, if that is to small then try a #2 Phillips.

Go to HomeDepot/Lowes/Sears and get yourself one of those 10-1 combo screw drivers, the better ones; Klein, Kobalt, or Craftsman Pro should be all you need for just about any screw.

I did that already

it was like the Phillips screwdrivers are too steep and none can get them out

I have one and I tried that

none of the screwdrivers are catching the "rivets" in the screw. It's like the screwdrivers are too "steep" or "sharp"

Apply more pressure then. I've taken out many screws just like those and I've never had a problem.

you'll have to shop around.

it took me a long time to find a screwdriver thin and long enough to use on a lot of my projects (normally those 10-in-1 drivers are much too short and thick to do a job in a tight spot

if you can't find one, fashion something out of a thin piece of metal (it is actually easier than it sounds) GL!

Quite true. You actually might be better off if they have a 99 cent store / dollar wonderfunland near you. I found a precision screwdriver set for a buck there once, with numerous screwdrivers.

I used a flat blade bunches of times to get a philips out. I've even sharpened + ground the sides of flat blades to make them fit.

I GOT THEM OUT

It took myself (200lb athletic guy) and a bud (230lb construction worker) to get them out. It took about half an hour of working them to get them anywhere. I turned it with all of my strength while he hit the top of the screwdriver with a hammer.

No offense, but you must have been doing something wrong. With a standard precision phillips screwdriver you should have been able to get those screws out easily.

Eh.. hope you weren't planning on reusing the hard drive. Seriously though, I've encountered many drive cages were the screws were jammed into the drive and nothing short of drilling could get them out. I picked up something like this a few years ago (mine is a 3 piece set, don't know if they still make them) http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00952157000P?vName=Tools&keyword=screw+extractor

Those things are life savers. They work 100% when other screwdrivers fail.

I wasn't doing anything wrong - and I am not reusing the drive

the screws were so tight they were indented in to the drive cage

most likely the screws were held in with a small drop of loctite..... that stuff can be hard as hell to break loose........ As much as you're really not supposed to use one on hardware, i'd have tried something with alot of torque, like my 18v Ryobi.........

edit: of course, i'd have probably messed up the screw, too..... :D
