GTAIV - Which console to buy for?

I'm getting it on 360. Until all the rest of my friends pick up PS3's (2 down, 10 to go in two years) I will always pick up the 360 version, since the only way I tolerate any multiplayer is when I'm playing with real life friends.

And I, unlike many, prefer the 360 controller.

PC version. First of all, I'm putting together a new rig, so when GTA4 comes out, it should play nicely. Secondly, I wouldn't take a PS3 if they were giving them away. Third, after building my new PC, I will hardly be able to afford a 360! :D

You're definitely not alone here. I like the 360 controller a lot more than the PS1-3 controller.

Actually, for many games I do too. In particular, any game that changes the camera/aims/etc. I find it to be a little less twitchy. With the PS3 pad, that right analog stick seems to skip around a little too much for my tastes. Even just barely moving it seems to make it jump too far...and yes, I even have the new Dualshock 3, too.
Still, this is a game that the PS3 lossless audio could really come into play. GTA's a very audio-centric game and that's one of the areas in which the PS3 has a flat-out undeniable advantage if they choose to take advantage of it.

It's ok. it's hard to resist being presumptious because of bias. ;)

Seeing how recent ports of 360/ps3 games have been, I wouldn't have too much faith in the PC port of gta4. The PC might be the buggy low framerate version for all you know.

Heh, well if experience is anything to go by, the PC version will be superiour. I remember playing GTA3, Vice City on my 19" 2048x1536 LCD and just loving how much better it looked than on the consoles at the time, and still with a good frame rate.

Now I have my 2560x1600 screen, I'm itching to get GTAIV running in that res :)

What?

GTA 3 is what made GTA popular, and that was on the PS2 before anything. Nobody really cared about GTA 1 and 2, it's 3 that made the series popular and it debuted on PS2 first and foremost. GTA 3 didn't even come to PC until two years after the PS2 version!

I'd have to agree. As much as I love the older GTA games, GTA3 really brought it to the forefront. A good part of that was because of the controversy though.

The glory days were great, yes, but this the present, in the age of shitty ports from the 360. So it's very possible it could be a bad port. Let's wait and see. Or should I say, you can wait and see, I'll be playing the game.

360, since that's what I own.:p

I wonder if the PS3 version will have any of the bugs that the PS3 version of Assasin's Creed had?

360. Simply because the 360 controller is the best controller ever made IMO. Comfort and function. Minus the D-pad of course. :D

PS3.

Had all my previous GTA's on playstation, the DLC or multiplayer isn't a selling point to me, and I like my DS3 for GTA better than the X-box pad.

360 for me, only because thats the only current-gen console I have. In an ideal world though, it would be on the 360 but played with a PS3 pad. Never played GTA with an Xbox pad, going to be straange ;)

PC, but if I buy a ps3 before the PC version comes out, then I will get it for the ps3.

Yeah maybe the PC version will be buggy, but it will be rendered to its full potential, with more AA and AF to sweeten the deal. ;)

I'm waiting for the PC version. Mouse and Keyboard rule for this type of game. Mods will also give the game a lot more replay value, and customization.

The graphics scheme? Meaning...?

360 for me, already pre-ordered and pre-paid for with old games I traded into Gamestop. Although if I had a PS3 as well, I'd definitely wait a day to see which was better.

And then PC, I'll always get it on the PC.

Maybe that was the wrong phrase, but meaning the tone of the colors and such. It looks more realistic and set in in the PS3 version, IMO, looks better.

Without GTA 3 and the PS2, nobody would even know who Rockstar is, and they definitely wouldn't be who they were today.

I mean, cmon, I support PC gaming a ton and hate when companies sell out, but Rockstar was never a PC developer first and foremost, hell, even GTA 1 and 2 came to consoles (Playstation, Dreamcast, hell, even Gameboy Color). Ever since GTA 3 years ago they've been consoles first, PC versions waaaay later. I know it infuriates PC only gamers, but Rockstar's fan base is console fans, and it's been that way for years now.

QFT to the max...

PC elitism knows no bounds next they'll be saying Nintendo abandoned their PC base bring Mario to the PC!!!!!! anyway I'm gonna wait for some reviews but I suspect 360 version will be the one I'm buying even though I own both the 360 and my sony blu-ray player(PS3).. I hope it actually plays games like they claim :D

Well the history of the GTA games show pretty acceptable ports, they get resolution, aspect ratio right, they get the controls right, they remove the typical console rubbish like auto aim, they're not what i'd call perfect but as far as ports go they're more or less godlike since no one else seems to be able to do it well.

Go ahead, it's ok, I can wait for a better quality copy, I have done for all the other GTA's all of which I've enjoyed through and through.

PS3. It's reliable, it's quiet, and IMO the controller is better suited to this style of game. I don't give a rats ass about DLC and mulitplayer.

I said the 360 earlier but I may have spoke to soon. I dont know if I really care obout the DLC, have they even mentioned what types of things will be available for download? Also with games like this I could care less about the multiplayer. Going to be a tough choice, I will let some reviews come out and see which one is clearly superior.

The PC versions have all had auto-aim in them, too. Check the control configuration menu. It's called something like "cycle target right" or "cycle target left."
GTA's a game where aiming really doesn't matter - so that's in all of them. The only time where twich aiming ever comes into play would be sniping people...something you do in all of 1-2 missions in the history of the franchise.

wait a sec. the ps3 version won't have multiplayer? is this confirmed?

Nobody is saying the PS3 version won't have multiplayer... they are saying they will get the 360 version for the multiplayer because all their friends have 360s, too.

Both versions are supposed to have the same multiplayer out of the box.

I plan to get the PS3 version because I'm going to get a PS3 when the MGS IV pack comes out in June and will probably never get a 360. I abhor the XBOX controller.

I have a PS3 and 360 but....unless I can find a decent price on a Dualshock 3 by the time the game comes out I will be getting the 360 version. I never have warmed up to the sixaxxis controller and rumble is a must for me..

I have both consoles and i currently have it preordered for the 360 because of the downloadable content but i'm hoping there are some reviews before the game comes out. I do like the ps3 a lot more so i would like to get it on there, but if the 360 is the only one getting the DLC i might have to go that way.

i picked up the ps3 version (both the friends i'd play online with pre-ordered for ps3)

I used my $50 gift code from amazon for it (9.99 including free shipping)
So at that price i can't complain at all.

Plus I really need games that i have to play on ps3 to help me justify why i bought it (other than movies : /)

huh? san andreas had the "lock on" thing for melee fighting, but thatwas sorely needed. I own 3, vc, and sa and have never seen a lockon mode for shooting.

I use a controller all the time on my pc for racing games, etc. I tried it on gta once...and promptly switched right back.

ill get it for 360, the DLC is the deciding factor for me. that and i dont own a ps3 :)

even if i had a ps3 id probly get it for the xbox, i like the xbox controller alot better for racing games and driving is a big part of GTA series so id prefer to use an xbox 360 controller + the DLC exclusive to xbox is another deal breaker for going with the 360 version.

and the devs have already said the games will be nearly identical on both systems, aside from the exclusive DLC for xbox that microsoft spent 50mill on heh which is an absurd amount of money to spend on 2 episodes of DLC considering you can pay for an MMO with that kind of money and get hundreds of millions back in return unless you screw up the game like SOE tends to do to thier MMO's

"off topic slightly- but i think Ubisoft said it will cost them 25mill to fund thier tom clancy mmo, and microsoft paid double that for 2 episodes to GTA4 which should offer 10+hours of gameplay each episode. a bit stupid on microsofts part if you ask me"

It's got a lock-on for anything. All of them do. You just lock on and you'll punch, kick, shoot, or whatever else to whatever you're lock on to. You don't have to use it, but it's there and it makes the tedious turf wars a lot more convenient. It won't work at really long range...but at that range you can line up a shot with the analog stick even if you aren't any good with it.

i used both a gamepad and the mouse and keyboard for SA on the pc,

i used the gamepad when ever i was in a car or vehicle, and put it down and use the mouse and keyboard for moving around and shooting people with the precision of the mouse, which is far more precise and faster than a gamepad will ever be.

I have a PS3 and honestly maybe 360 would be better, kinda gives you the option of whether or not DLC will suit you.

THATS not cumbersome!

its not really, but it gives you the best of both worlds. atleast you have the choice to do that if you choose :) or you can use one or the other.

I guess I'm the odd man out here, I've never had a problem driving with kb+mouse. Ever.

i dont have a problem driving with the keyboard and mouse i just prefer the feel of the gamepad for driving. being able to turn a little or very sharp without have to tap the stick, like you do with keyboard buttons.

I have the PS3 therefore going to get the PS3 version. It might even have higher rez textures in the blue ray due to additional space. A lot of people were upset when they found out that Halo's 3 textures weren't even 720P, they were 540P (more common in EU) and it was upscaled to the desired rez by the 360s scaler.
I believe ps3 will get the episodic content later on, that contract can't last forever and rockstar does want to capitalize on the product and get it more mainstream.

What an impetuous and baseless assumption to make.

Every single 360->PC port:
looks better on the PC
runs better on the PC
controls better on the PC (not only do we have the choice of mouse/kb, but also that of any gamepad including the 360 one)

This assertion may not have rung true a little over a year ago, but with the hardware available to us now, you can not name me a single exception to the above outside of EA Sports games, and that's merely due to the fact that they port over the PS2 versions of their titles rather than give us the 360/PS3 versions.
