Desk you use for your 30" monitor?

I'm looking to buy a new computer desk. The main problems I have are:

  • Needs to support 30" monitor comfortably.
  • Keyboard tray, if any, would have to be wide enough to hold a G15 (the original ver) and mouse. I would be willing to buy a new keyboard that isn't so wide though.
  • Should be deep enough that I don't have to sit too close to the monitor.
  • Ideally has enough room for, or a way to ideally place Z5500 speakers.

I'm having a hard time finding something that meets all of the above requirements. It seems like I know a lot of you have similar problems... so, what desks do you use for your setup and where did you buy them? Pics, if you have them, would be great!

My price range is $200-$400 at most and I'm not so concerned with construction material or appearance as much as I am with practicality.

Cliffs:
- WTB Computer Desk for 30" Monitor
- Show me pics of your setups!

Here is my current setup. I'm actually using a TV stand :p It get's really uncomfortable hunching over this tiny thing!

anything from ikea would be good. with a 30" you want enough space to work and still have space for your monitor. a simple table setup gives maximum space for $ spent. check their office/work section www.ikea.com. ideally you would be close enough to one to actually look at the tables before you buy, but you did not specify where you are. good hunting.

I actually bought this desk to support the weight of my 22" CRT (that's now living on another desk). That's actually a 24" LCD on the left, but you'll see there's more than enough room for a 30" LCD. I do not like keyboard trays (they tend to be too small and I dislike wobble when I'm typing quickly). I didn't bother coordinating the faux-wood finish (melamine) with the veneer on my speakers since it would have added to the price. This is the model I purchased ($200 with included delivery at Office Depot at the time, I can't quickly locate it on their webpage at the moment though). There are larger (width) and smaller models of the same desk available.

I suppose my tastes are on the "big and simple" side :).

+1 for Ikea desk. Compared to desks of comparable size at other office furniture retailers these desks are of good value for a large solid desk with a a lot of space.

I have this (corner desk right) galant series desk (there's also corner desk left):
*I also bought the extension which is the part the printer on the left is sitting on. That made the desk longer by a good 60cm if i remember correctly. I can't find that extension online but I had it configured at the store.

but any of the galants are very spacey and solid.
I don't use a keyboard tray but I have the straight height adjustable legs adjusted to the proper height so I can work comfortably.

Here's a photo of the desk when I first got it in 2003. I use it when I'm home (at college now). Used the deep corner to support my 20" trinitron. Now i have an old 19" crt in the corner and my 2007WFP LCD next to it on the left. Easy to build by yourself. Plenty of space for mousing and a natural keyboard. As you can see I need all the space i can get for the mess I make.

I'd say the galant corner would be perfect for you:

Thanks for all the input guys. Those biomorph desks are awesome, if I had $2k to drop on one of them I would do it in a heartbeat... This one would be perfect! Maybe once I move into a house :) For now though, I think you guys are right on with the Ikea suggestion. I used to have a jerker, but they don't seem to carry those any more... the closest I can find is the Fredrick (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60111123). I think it'll fit the 30" if I lower the bottom level down. Worst case I figure I can just take out the middle shelf. Now I just have to convince myself to drive 3 hours to Ikea in sacramento :) Might as well buy some other much needed furniture... oh, and the meatballs, can't leave without some meatballs!

I would not get the Fredrick. I recently had the same dilemna you have and went to Ikea to check it out since the Jerker has been discontinued. The Fredrick did not seem stable and wobbled when mimicking the actions of typing on a keyboard. Putting a printer on it would only make it worse. I would have chosen the left corner Galant had I had enough room in the space I wanted to put my desk. I ended up getting a used Jerker on craigslist and would recommend you trying to do so as well.

I have the Ikea one for my 30".

Very nice setup.. which desk is that?

I really wish they didn't discontinue the Jerker... Now that you mention it, the Fredrick does appear to be a little bit on the cheap side. Ah well, craigslist might be where its at... thanks for the suggestion :)

What size monitors are the ones that fit perfectly next to 30's like that? Im guessing a 22 in portrait.

my officedepot onyx desk fits a 30'' nicely. Usually they have it for ~100 instore.

Another vote for the Galant. Here's mine. It's the same configuration as j1zzn1t's but in dark brown. I'm using a 24" LCD, but will buy a 30" as soon as my tax refund is direct deposited. If there's an IKEA store close enough to you, I recommend buying directly from the store instead of through their website. The stores are always running great sales not available online. My entire desk (including legs, frames, table tops) was only $169 + tax at the Atlanta store. It would cost over $300 + tax + shipping online.

are those galant desks mr wolf and j1zzn1t? how stable are those A-legs? i was looking at http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09806763 and http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S29806818 but the latter says it 'holds up to 21" monitor'! so i am a little hesitant. the height adjustability is a big plus though

I had the T leg version of the same desk 160cm x80xcm. DOn't worry about the monitor limit. My desk held 2 19" and an old heavy 22" LCD, 2 15lb monitor arms, my laptop, keyboard, mouse, speakers, misc crap like drinks and food, plus my desktop computer right on the desk. It is a solid desk, 10 year warranty, metal frame, metal legs, solid wood desk top. It's not the cheaper Ikea desk line.

hmm..so should i go A-leg or T-leg?

actually the desk was suprisingly stable. Holds my monitors just fine no wobbly legs or bowing of the table. There are actually metal rails that make a skeleton frame underneath the table that aren't visible in pictures. These rails make the table extremely stable.

Just to echo my fellow Galanters... It's a very strong, stable desk with either leg style. I chose the A-legs because they were on sale, 2-for-1 ($10 for 2 legs). Tough to beat that price. I also think the A-legs look better.

I had a flat Jerker for about 3 years. I liked it a lot but found it have limited expandability. The great thing about the Galant is you can customize it exactly as you want. Having owned both desks, I think the Galant is far superior.

For someone that doesn't have a ton of room to work with or actually doesn't want a corner desk, the Jerker is the way to go. I just picked one up in NYC of Craigslist for 80.00 and couldn't be happier. Support my 26" DS-263N perfectly and gives me PLENTY of room left over for everything else.

Ditto the monitor limit was probably just meant for CRT depth measurements. My T leg Galant holds my 21" CRT and a 170lb me without squeaking. The metal frame underneath really holds well. and The a-legs are significantly cheaper than the T legs-I opted for the T legs merely for looks.

I use an O'Sullivan Computer Workcenter model 11860 that I got from officemax a few years ago for about $120. I'm not sure if they carry it anymore. I have a mini computer stand behind its chamfered corner that holds my 37" westinghouse so that its 36" - 40" away from my eyes.

This pic is a few yrs old but gives an idea.

There is a slightly better wood texture desk which is similar at officedepot (at least they used to sell one). The officedepot one has a keyboard drawer in the middle section, and doesn't have the pillar-box under the middle section. I got the officedepot one for my girlfriend but I use the officemax Osullivan model. I like it because its lower in height which allows me to use my keyboard anywhere on the desk surface instead of having to use a keyboard drawer.

Its hard to get a full pic of the desk like that, its pretty large. This overhead gives an idea of the surface space.
