Seems that Fry's has the game on sale for 24.99. I've been tempted to pick this up. I'm a big Guildwars fan. So I've been looking for something along that line of games. Is Hellgate: London worth 25 bucks? Did the all the bugs get fixed?

Yes, I think so. I bought the game on release and had been in the beta for over a month prior to that even. Became a Founder asap. I eventually "left" for 2-3 months because the people I brought over to the game had left due to "bugs." I never personally thought there were very many, but maybe I was just used to it from the beta.

Anyhow, they have fixed the memory leak, performance in general, and added a lot of new content and balancing to guardians/evokers/marksman. New patch coming out in a week or two looks great so far as well. Patch 2.0 out within 2 months as well which is going to be a huge update with pvp.

So yes, I'd think it's worth $25.

I thought it was pretty fun, in spite of not being excited about it at all. It was a game I was 100% NOT looking forward to. But after I played it, I thought it was pretty good.

If you like a good old fashioned hack n slash with some new fangled 3D graphics, it is probably worth $25 and then some, because you don't have many other games that can give you this. Unfortunately, the tile sets are linear and repetitive, the story line, while good for a few cheap laughs, is just terrible (which is a huge letdown because the opening cinematic is fantastic), single player support has been terrible thus far, and the people who make this game are under the delusion that it is some sort of MMORPG which causes all kinds of stupidity in their decisions. But all that aside, it can be a lot of fun and pretty addictive with the random levels, mobs, and loot.

They have improved a lot in the way of bugs, performance issues, skill balances, etc. over the last 5 months.

2 weeks? more like 2 hours. lol, Hellgate was a waste of money. I uninstalled that POS and threw it in the trash.

werd. i did pretty much what he did only i gave it to a friend, turns out he did the same thing and passed it on like that death tape from that one "scary" movie that came out like a few years ago. (cant remember the name of that movie though...)

The Ring?

If you are only going to play HGL for maybe 5 hours a week then sure buy it.

If you want a serious, in-depth game then stay as far away as possible.

Go try the demo. The demo is basically what the entire game is except for the last act. You fight the same monsters from act 1 to the very end boss.

Since quitting WoW, my friends and I have needed a game to play. We decided to try HGL, and we've been playing it almost nonstop for 2 days now.

The way I look at it is like this: It's $30. A movie is $15ish for 2-3 hours of entertainment? I've definitely gotten more than 6 hours of entertainment in HGL, and it's a game you can just load up whenever you are bored. Money well spent imo.

It is no Diable 3, that is for sure. The game is very very boring, especially if your a Guardian. It was fun for a while, but like others have said, every level is pretty much exactly the same.

Being a guardian in Stonehenge was the worst experience of my gaming life. Everything flies, so you grapple it and shield stun, it flies away and you rinse and repeat for another 45 minutes to an hour.

Zero reason to group in the first part of the game. I beat the entire game on normal and nightmare solo, Stonehenge is suppossed to have group content, but I unistalled and gave the game away to a buddy who wanted to try it.

I was looking forward to this game for a long time and was so completely let down it wasn't even funny. Ranks as one of the worst games I've ever played, and i gave it every chance I could.

+1. I was bored from the start. Gave it 6 more hours and couldn't find any reason to continue playing it.

Purely from what I hear of course, it's buggy and repetative and they've had major issues with billing and other things, I've stayed well clear of this, and I'm desperately seeking MMO's to play at the moment.

Don't listen to all the negative BS you hear. I've been playing the game since November, have 6 characters, play the game each and every day and I'm also a subscriber. If you wanted a game like GW, then no, you don't want HGL. If you want a game that's similar to Diablo/Diablo II, with better graphics and the same old appeal of getting better and better loot, then HGL is a great game. I'm glad I bought it before all the FUD here on the [H]. To be sure, everyone has different opinions and likes different things, but I personally like the game a lot. I got two coworkers turned onto the game and we party up together a couple times a week and have a blast.

Climber, I think the guardian was the least fun character to play. If you want to have fun with HGL, try a blademaster. That character is a LOT more fun... :D

I've been playing HG:L multiplayer for a couple weeks now. I find the hack and slash loot fest to be enjoyable. With the content that's been added and the content that is coming shortly, I think this game will be a fun way to kill time while I wait for GTA IV and AoC.

It is NOTHING like Diablo. Last time I checked Diablo wasn't first and third person, but overhead, it had a decent story, it wasn't an MMO, it was good, etc.

Ok ok to be fair I spose I can go in more depth than that. :)

Hellgate is an MMO where Diablo is not, and by that I mean the attack system is that of an MMO. There is no attack cursor like the good old days of Diablo, there sure ain't no epic cow runs or Baal runs (this includes alternatives to these), not only that but it is an FPS as well. HGL also has mediocre graphics, and was extremely overhyped. Here is a game where you can look at the screenshots of the game before it came out and it looks nothing like it.

If HGL wasn't hyped as the unofficial sequel to Diablo, or "by the makers of Diablo", then it might of been better, but even then, it's a mediocre game.

To the OP, by all means try it.

I think it's pretty fun. It's incredibly mindless, hack-n-slash, gaming. As long as you aren't advancing the storyline, you can jump in, play a level or two for a few minutes and be done. Or you can spend lots of time at it. I haven't tried multi-player yet, though.

Get the demo and try it out. It'll let you play as the blademaster and as the marksman. It'll give you a pretty good feel for the game.

I suppose I should have gone more in depth. It's like diablo in that you're constantly trying for more and better loot. It's also similar in gameplay in that it's pretty much a click fest. It's an action RPG with MMO elements, more then strictly an MMO. Also, you can play online and not pay a dime unless you want to subscribe. Like I said, to each their own but personally I like the game enough to be playing it 5 months after buying it. Plus I did a 6 month subscription and have been happy I did.

With a subscription, what actual real benefits do you get? Is it worth it?

If you play online a lot, it's worthwhile, at least to me. You get the ability to create a guild, plus you get access to online content, like Stonehenge. There are also subscriber only items, a few of which I've gotten while playing and they're pretty worthwhile. Plus, in the future there'll be even more content released. I did a 6 month subscription, which is about the price of a new game and feel I've gotten decent value from it. If you don't like the game, or are lukewarm on it, then subscribing won't make a difference and you should avoid it.

It's terrible. Worst game of the year if you ask me.

I'm curious what you and Boshingtang have against the game. While I realize everyone has different likes and dislikes, I have a hard time believing someone disliked it enough to throw it away or label it worst game of the year. I've seen TONS of horrid games and HGL doesn't come close. I agree there are issues with it, but to call it the worst game of the year is a stretch. Not trying to start a flame war, just honestly curious. I didn't read much of the info while the game was in development and just downloaded the demo for the heck of it. I was surprised how much I ended up liking the game and several people I know feel the same way. Just curious why some other people have so much hate for the game.

HG:L won 2007 most disspointing game of the year on a poll here

i played the demo was got viollently sick from it...stay far away

Most of the people that hate the game most likely only played it at the very beginning, got sick of the bugs and quit. The game was way overhyped at the beginning and killed 90% of the community. If they would have worked on the game for 4months more before releasing it would have done so much better. Now for people like me that don't expect it to be Diablo3, it is hours and hours of fun

Yeah, exactly.

Yeah, with good reason. But it was disappointing mostly due to the huge hype and seriously buggy initial release -- it was by no means the worst game of the year.

I found it really bad when it first came out, but now -- 12 or so patches later -- the game is much improved. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but I'd say it's worth $25.

I never went into the game expecting Diablo 3. What I was expecting was a decent storyline, viable class builds, multi-player that was worthwhile, and levels that varied. As it was the storyline was a shamables, melee classes suck horribly even moreso in the expansion, the caster classes were pretty weak, the pet classes ai was a huge joke, zero reason to group at all, HC:E is pointless if your not a cookie cutter build, and every single level is exactly the same, well one may be in a sewer and the other may be above ground, but you'll get the point.

Climber, I think the guardian was the least fun character to play. If you want to have fun with HGL, try a blademaster. That character is a LOT more fun...

Blademasters = lots of dying, especially HC:E so no it sucked balls, big sweaty donkey balls with pieces of dried crap on them. Surges sucked, and the Guardian was fun, especailly as a Gundian, but come on Stonehenge was a botched mess that made no sense, especailly to melee classes. I don't know how a BM can solo in Stonehenge, both of my guardians were complete disappointments in stonehenge.

If there was any reason to group up, join a guild, farm content, or have a viable storyline that made sense then I would be more inclined to give it a more favorable response. However, based on my time in the game, from release till mid-feb the game was not fun. If I want a single player game where I can upgrade weapons and have a decent fight, I have a plethora of other games to fufill that need.

I really wanted to like HG:L. When I first saw the screenshots of it 2 years before release, when I read the beginning storyline, when I read the first book, I thought they had a great great game. When the trailers first came out, I was blown away. The gameplay the characters, the environment, everything had me salivating. But they didn't even remotely release anything like that.

How many two hand swords are in the game? None. I'm a freaking Holy Templar and I don't get a two handed sword? You mean I can solo the entire game on nightmare and do HC:E and the only viable way to do that is by dual weilding guns?

The game just wasn't for me. I like storylines, I like exploring zones and levels, I like to have reasons to group every so often, and most of all I like game economies. HG:L Had none of this, and still to this day it doesn't. So there are my reasons for trashing this game and not being able to recommend it to anyone.

You get extra storage space. You can make a guild. Guilds do nothing at this point in time other than basically give you a second buddy list. It gives you the Stonehenge area which is a weeks worth of fun. You get a handful of assorted unique items that are sub only.

Thats about it.

Don't buy this game. If you get screwed into buying this game stay away from sub'ing for sure.

If they dropped the ridiculous subscriber fees, then yea, it might be worth it.

There is no reason that Guild Wars can be free to play, but Hellgate requires $15 a month.

I'd just hold out for Mythos, which is a supremely better hack and slash title.

For you it does sound like the game doesn't work. Personally, I don't see the appeal of HC:E, so the fact it doesn't work well doesn't bother me. Yes the game is repetitive and the story is weak, but all that notwithstanding I still enjoy the hell out of the game. I've played the entire game through with two seperate characters and have a third about to finish. Now I have two that I'll be playing in Nightmare difficulty. I like the fact I can solo the entire game, though with the addition of Stonehenge there are now areas (the wilds) where grouping is supposed to be a must and you should get good drops from those areas. I don't know though as I haven't gone there yet. I have been soloing the other part of Stonehenge and will soon be going up against Moloch. I guess I just don't need the depth other people need. If it was deeper, I'd just like it better I guess.

BTW, the second book came out last month and is pretty good. I think the name is Goetia.

You do realize the subscription fee is a voluntary deal, right? You don't have to pay a single dime and can play online through the entire game. The only thing you don't have access to is extra storage, the ability to create a guild and Stonehenge. There are also a few subscriber only items, but not enough to really worry about.
