What 24" Samsung LCD has DVI-I Dual Link?

I'm going to get a composite RGB cable and a RGB-DVI adapter on ebay so I can hook up my wii and ps2 to a monitor. My current one is a 245bw and is DVI-D.

So which models are DVI-I Dual Link?

Looking at the website, none of them are. It shouldn't matter in the least though, as single-link supports resolutions up to and including 1920x1200. And I'd think that you could hook up a DVI-I cable into a DVI-D socket with no problem; DVI-D contains both analog and digital data, but if digital is available, it's not like the analog would be used anyway. So don't worry about it. (And have a little more patience; sometimes it takes a little more than a half-hour for somebody to notice your post and reply. ;) )

yea but the composite-DVI adapter on ebay is DVI-I Dual Link. It will not fit in my 245bw because it's got more pins...

specifically these-

or this all in one-

but as u can see, they are both DVI-I Dual Link.... so unless there is a DVI-I to DVI-D adapter?? which is pretty retarded since Id have to have so many damn adapters just to get my ps2 and wii working... [im at a dorm so lack of TV]

i've never heard of a dvi port that will only physically fit one type of dvi cable.

looking that pictures of the 245BW's dvi port on newegg, it is just like any other dvi port and will fit either

Looks like it has all the pins to me:

That said, since you're dealing with an analog signal here, it might be better to try to find a composite-to-VGA adapter instead. Then there will be no question it will work.

Why not just get a VGA to RGB adapter because the DVI isn't actually using digital over composite. The only pins it's using are the Analogue pins on DVI

I was confusing DVI-D and DVI-I there; yeah, it looks like the monitor's DVI port is digital only. As is likely the case with almost all LCD monitors on the market, now that I think about it. That's why all the monitors still come with a VGA port also; I repeat for emphasis the suggestion to try to find a RGB/VGA adapter instead.

by RGB, i assume u mean component? and not RWY composite.

There is no RGB - VGA, u need a box to do that and the scaling is horrendous. i spent $50 on a box for my ps2 and its horrendous. colors and picture is ew. unacceptable in my eye. however, there have been reports of RGB component-dvi working well. and DVI-D doesnt do analogue, only digital, DVI-I supports Analogue and digital. Also, I believe LCD's have a problem with interlaced output, as such is outputted by PS2 and Wii on conventional CRT tv's. Hence, the need for RGB component cables and a software switch on the console to switch it to Progressive output.

correct me if my homework is wrong :D

Bencho, I'm increasingly thinking that what you want is a TV, not a computer monitor. ;) If you want to stick with a computer monitor though, and can't find a good way to translate from analog to digital, you're best bet is getting one with component inputs. My LG has them, and I think most Dells do too. Composite-to-component is at least all within the analog realm, and should provide much less trouble to translate.

?
the only difference i see in the cables are the extra 6 pins in the middle that the DVI-D has

You're thinking of the difference between single-link and dual-link; the difference between DVI-D and DVI-I are the presence of the 4 pins around the bar, which transmit the analog signal.

erich-
if u look closely at the adapter, the Horizontal pin has 4 others around it. hard to see but its there.

yea... no room for a tv in here ^.^ hows the LG for you? personally i kinda like my Sammy.. with it's shitty viewing angles etc etc lol.. but what other options are there @ 24" with component? and whats the prices im looking at?

will report back tmr- sleeping now, test tomorrow. and thanks guys for the help so far!

 looks like i edited my post too late.

but yeah i see what you're saying now

The LG L246WP-BN is wonderful, especially for the $250 it ended up costing me. ;) Sadly, unless you're really lucky and have a Circuit City or Best Buy in the area with one still left after all this time, you're unlikely to be able to get it at all, or at least at anywhere near the price I paid for it.

As for other ones, the Dell 2408WFP is a good-quality monitor that has as many inputs as a TV and can take composite natively if you can stomach the price.

You can't just use some adapters to make this work...VGA uses RGB. The Wii and PS2 output component video (YPbPr), which is completely different from RGB. You need some sort of converter box for this to work (and not just a bunch of cables and adapters). The DVI to component adapter that is further up in the thread is for certain ATI video cards that can output component video through the DVI plug. It cannot be used in reverse.

yeaa... i dont like dell. :D

hardwareguru-
that component-vga cable is not 100% right, u need a component end that is female, and a vga that is male.

blue fox-
oh??.... i've always referred to component as RGB [due to its Red Green Blue] in which case, my homework has been off :( and if that adapter is one way like u say... damnit :(

then what is everyone's thoughts on this one? says it does the component job---

Alas, none of those you linked to will work. They merely shift the form-factor, not convert from analog to digital. Something that does convert would probably cost a lot more than what you're finding on eBay. As one of the sellers says in his Q&A:

Q: I bought a composite to dvi-i 24+5 Male cable to hook up my game consols & hd-dvd players to my monitor. But I didn't know that my monitor took dvi-d 24+1 Female. Would this work? If not do you have one?

A: Hi, I am sorry, I am not really know your situation, and may not be able to give you any good idea, pls note that this is just a adaptor/connector ,,and couldnot be used to converter the signal,, Best regards, me

Here's one more idea, if you don't mind having your computer on whenever you're playing the Wii: Make your computer into a TV. :D A lot of TV tuner cards have component input. Here's one of many options: the MSI TV@nywhere Plus (picked at random, nothing special). If you go that route, make sure to research well that it will run under your preferred OS alright; some cards have trouble with 64-bit Windows, others with Linux, etc...

Yes, I realize that it is only a shift in form-factor, but..., isn't 480p a digital signal? therefore the analog portion of the cable is unused, thus making the pin correction adapter realizable as a solution?

And I have been avoiding the TV tuner route as well due to lag since running your console through extra hardware/software is subject to PC hiccups and such.

This really is a PITA. I've gone through so many forums online and I find it hard to believe there isn't one quick, relatively cheap solution :(

Anyone have either of these monitors? They support component out of the box. Comments?

Can we make this a sticky? or start a new stickied thread for a list of solutions to consoles-->pc monitor?
