help me out, i can buy a 8800 for like $400 or i can save a bit more and go 9800

but i seen the 8800 is still better in alot of cases

Up to you. They perform pretty similarly until you overclock the 9800, then its lead is a little bigger. Just depends on if you personally feel its worth it. Personally my preference lies with spending the extra few bucks.

I belive the 9800 gtx is cheaper (350ish), seems like a good deal if you dont already have an 8800gtx.

yer well i can pay 400 for the 8800GTX and if i want i can always OC aswell

and the 9800 is only 512mb and yer id rather pay the less for the 8800 cause i also need a new psu

You can get an 8800GTX for 289usd with rebate @ Newegg-

Mine did 630 on the core with the stock cooler and was capable of 661|2040 1601 with a Thermalright HR-03 Plus installed. I've had my GTX since they were first released.

Most people would do fine with an 8800GTS 512Mb or the cheaper 8800GT. If you use a lot of AA and play at 1920x you may find the 8800GTX more useful in many cases. I've seen the GTS|GT around 207usd and 175usd with rebate respectively.

I would not buy a 9800GTX over a 8800GTS unless I had plans to go Tri-SLi.

i say it really depends on what your current card is now and what res you plan to use. if you have a 8800 series gpu now, then i don't think it would be worth upgrading.

but if you got the cash, its really a toss up between the two. each card has their pros and cons. just need to ask yourself if you can live with the cons for which ever card you pick. ie. heat, power draw, more/less onboard ram, etc.

my 8800 Ultra owns you all. :)

My large feet own your e-penis.

@OP, I would just save your money and maybe wait a few more weeks for prices to settle a bit. If there is any more news regarding the 9900GTX regarding pricing, availability, and performance, then you can decide from that point.

Here's what I think about the 9800 GTX:

7 responses and not a single one asked what resolution you are running at or what games?

A 9600GT could be all you need for all we know.

if you do game higher than on 24", think more onboard memory.

The 9800GTX is cheaper and performs slightly better. It's not 'generation leap' by any means. Depending on your usage, you could also go SLI. The 9800GTX is a great SLI performer, significantly better then 8800GTX.

So its got less memory bandwidth than the previous two cards by quite a bit, yet equals or outperforms them at most settings? Sounds great to me. Now they just need to attach the same horsepower to a wider memory bus and we'll have some serious shit on our hands.

well curently my res is 1280x1024 but a few weeks after i got the 8800 with more pay in hand i'll be buying a 22" then running watever it is like 1050x1660 or sumfin

1680x1050? 9600gt and have a nice day? or you can step upto the 8800gts to be a little better future game proof...

From what I understand, There are several Factory OC'd GTXs hitting the shelves in a Week that will clock in with up to 780mhz Core Speeds.. that would be the thing to get..

On newegg.....1)$210 before $30 MIR OC'd MSI 88GT @ 660/1900......2)$165 before $20 MIR dualslot OC'd 9600GT @ 700 core/1900mem

IMO this 96GT is fine for upto 1680x1050(in most games, besides crysis ofc) while the 88GT provides some added horsepower to be safe(and get high shader setting in crysis compared to medium with 96GT lol)

p.s. hmm, 2x96GT in SLI=$330 before any MIR or $420 for 2x88GT which would probably show up a single 88GTX/Ultra.
p.s.s. I forget how 88GTS prices are, damn I'm tired.....need sleep.

yer but i can pick up my mates 8800GTX 768mb for like 50bux more than wat a 8800GTS is and last time i checked the GTX is better than GTS

GTS can be had for $200 after rebate and it offers near GTX performance, sometimes faster. cheapest GTX is over $100 more. is the GTX 50% faster than the GTS? No, not even close. Thus, not worth the 50% price premium.
