Ugrading to Visata 64bit, what issues should I expect from games

Hey all,

I'm about to take the plunge with a quad core/Vista Ultimate 64bit rig and I was wondering what kinds of problems I might expect from some of my older games? I still really enjoy BF2 and the older C&C games like RA2 and Generals as well as plenty of games I've missed in the past few years.

Also plan to try out Gears, CoD4, Crysis, and Stalker, etc...

Any headaches I should be expecting? Do any of you dual boot just on the off chance an older game you might feel like playing won't want to run?

I've been out of the game for a while, so I haven't kept in depth track of Vista and its progress recently.

I do dual boot XP Pro 32 bit and Vista Home Premium 64 bit for just your reasoning. However so far I have not run into any issues with games I have installed in Vista.

Well I have only come across three issues.
1) KOTOR / KOTOR 2 runs like crap, so I run it off my old comp.
2) C&C3 Needed a patch to run.
3) My Audigy 2 ZS needed a patch.

however you can in theory select very high settings in Crysis

Everything else has been great, I hate going back to XP now.

XBox controller drivers are still iffy for 64 bit... various sound and video drivers aren't perfect yet (video is better), as well as other drivers that aren't totally ironed out for Vista 64 bit yet.

x64 is damn good all around. I don't think you'll have many, if any, issues. My only un-fixble issue is my Audigy 2 ZS, for which creative has not released drivers that allow my microphone to work 100% of the time. I don't think they will either. So, I have to enable my onboard audio, just so I can have stable microphone input.

Now in a few months, I'll be wishing had Server 2008 vlite'd down to a workstation configuration.

Thanks for the replies all.

I am planning to play some C&C3 so I'll make sure I get it patched.

I'm totally stoked that I'll be able to do some gaming on my PC again. It's been a long while since I've been on the high end of the hardware spectrum. (9700/9800 pro era) and I've got some catching up to do.

I was still thinking about dual booting, but then I forgot that I'm leaving my current rig completely intact, so I won't really need to. Going to turn it into a media server/mame box and stick it in my entertainment center.

I have no issues with Vista Ultimate x64. Everything from Gears of War, Bioshock, Crysis, COD4, TF2, World In Conflict, Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne and even Starcraft/Brood Wars work perfectly.

Oh, and as for people having problems with the Audigy series in Vista, check out Daniel_K's drivers. Everything work perfect for me with his drivers in Vista.

I have ZERO problems with drivers & games on my Home Premium x64 in the 5-6 months I've had it...

I've been running x64 since 1/30/07 and have had no issues with any games either.

sweet ass. I definitely feel more assured. I was expecting doom and gloom, so this was a nice surprise. I'm expecting a few hiccups from left field, just because, it's pc gaming, thats how it goes.

Sounds like it may be smooth sailing. I can't wait to get my parts in, I haven't built a new rig in forever.

one issue, cnc3 requires it to be patched current version 1.09 to work, and that's it.

Yeah, I was surprised how smooth everything went for me. But I guess its just the loud minority that's bitching about Vista/x64's problems.

expect the infamous "HL2.EXE has stopped responding" error everytime you quit a hl2 game.

my Team Fortress 2 pings went from 60in xp to 200 in vista, and I never did figure out why.
something to keep an eye on anyways. FPS was down 10-20% (pre-SP1)

I have not found any real issues. Gametap doesn't seem to work and some games needed special patches, but all new games work fine. I have Fallout and Planescape working just fine on Vista x64.

I initially had a problem with Steam.....but I think it was me and not Steam......noob issues with x64.
Other than that.....every game I use has run flawlessly on HomePremium x64, I had issues with Gears of War, but so has everybody, XP or Vista......the game just doesn't run well on PC.

My only gripe with Vista in general is "seemingly" longer load times for a game to start.....after it loads up, there is no problem......again that may be just me.

I used to say the same thing until I plopped in 4GB's of memory and it's waaaay...better.

Good deal, as thats what I plan to have from the get go.

This will be the most capable rig I've ever built, and fastest factoring in o/c'ing... probably since the days of Celeron 300A's and the original Thunderbird. The speed jump should be tremendous, and I can't wait to play games at my monitors native resolution.

I'm pretty sure that is the only game that I had problems with. I have nothing but good things to say about Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

I would recommend this for your Raptor

I appreciate the suggestion, that won't fit in the shuttle, but I'll definitely be monitoring temps to see if it needs any additional cooling. The shuttle actually has a dual fan setup specifically for cooling the hard drives, and if it proves to not quite be enough, I'll be modding it so it does.

Thanks again (to everyone) for all the info!

so far all i run is WoW on Vista 64 and have NO issues, gotta install a few more games this weekend and test it out since i just upgraded.

No issues for me, except the previously mentioned C&C 3 requiring patch (officially, meaning what it says on the back of the box, it only supports vista 32 bit; but it still works) and the weird error message you get when you quit a hl2 game (like team fortress 2) but that doesn't have an impact on gaming.
Overall I'm really glad I went for x64, I was originally planning on dual booting xp but since I haven't had any issues I never got around to it.

Just a heads up to the OP, I'm not sure about the architecture of the 7800gs (listed in your sig) but vista has problems with 7900gt cards, more correctly the vista drivers for the card blow. Many users, such as myself, experienced screen corruption in 3D applications. Now there is a work around and it involves changing the clock speed of your card slightly, say 1 MHz either up or down fixes it right up.

However you may not experience this problem considering you are using a 7800.

Edit: I just saw your comming soon rig, and you will not have problems with your 8800gt.

You should expect to lose 20fps in COD4, that game doesn't like 64bit for some reason. I went from 95fps in XP x64 to 120fps in Vista x86 the exact same scene with the exact same same settings, resolution, drivers, etc... I had never seen such a difference between the two in a whole year of using XP x64 so I triple checked, and all the variables were identical. Makes a big difference when you are trying to maintain 100 or 125fps for online play (I switch between the two depending on the situation).

Grabbed Vista 64bit and 4Gb of RAM on the day it was released and have never looked back.

Oh god...no one's going to be able to tell a difference between 125 and 100 FPS. If you turn the FPS monitor off I'm sure you won't notice the difference either.

There are a couple issues with games and Vista 64, although they are very minor. The only annoying issue I have with Vista 64 is BSOD related after a fresh install with 4GB installed. I had to re-create the image and slipstream the appropiate hotfix

Great thread. :p

I am planning on upgrading to Vista x64 tonight.

I am glad I found this thread.

EDIT:
Good God.
This SP1 interface os sooo sexy. wow.
I love this. All my games run perfectly so far on Vista Utimate x64: Css, Gears of War, HL2 series, Cod4, Crysis.
All of them run very well.

SP1 FTW!!

With XP you will be able to turn on more eye candy or AA/AF over Vista. As a gamer and OC'er I'd rather have max performance than a new OS that will perform less in DX9. I just dual-boot. XP for main, Vista for DX10 games.

I went Vista 64 Home Premium since I ws going to do a build with 8GB or ram and haven't really run into any problems with games even though I expected a lot. I loaded up AVP 2 yesterday and it ran great---wish there was an AVP3 (that has nothing related to any of the recent movies in it--god, they ruined it compared to the Dark Horse comics).

HL2 Ep2 ran great. I haven't run into the HL2 stopped working error.

BF2 and all its expansions and mods have also given me no issues on Vista64.

If you have a Fry's in your area, Vista 64 Home Premium (OEM) is 99 bucks this weekend.
