Looks like Free Shipping is off...Might come back in a few hours

shipping is not free. Ends up about the same price as all the other places but still decent deal. $137 6-9 day shipping to texas.

im wondering if thats a misprint, if it was a 2 platter disc, then they would each have to be 375 GB

It says formatted capacity so it could be per platter since the formatted/actual capacity of a drive is always less than its advertised value...yay binary conversion!

Also, if that is a pic of the actual drive, its clearly a 3 platter drive

Using the power of Google, it seems that all of their drives are using the 3 platter format, but limit capacity to 'industry standard' sizes (in firmware?). At least that's what's suggested here:

On a related note, (although this is turning into a discussion thread), this drive is nice and quiet and has been in service in my Tivo HD for about a month. I can't tell a difference between this and the stock WD drive from a noise perspective under normal use.

i'd rather have seagate drives honeslty.

5yrs warranty and defintely a better HD manufacturer.

Like most things, it's a matter of opinion. I like Samsung drives because *most* of them are very quiet and run cool, that's a bit more important to me than all-out speed.

My choice of drives would be

Samsung
Seagate
Hitachi
Western Digital
Maxtor

numbers 2 and 3 are interchangeable in the list.

Is this drive slower/faster/same? than its big brother Samsung F1 1TB drive?

I have the F1 1TB drive and had the F1 750GB drive. The 750GB model was definitely use the 250GB platters (not the 334GB platters in the 1TB model).

Unfortunately two of the three 750GB Samsung drives I got from NewEgg were bad (which could happen with any drive during shipping). I also had odd problems with the F1 drives when my computer was in AHCI mode (you can read about those issues here).

I'm quite pleased with the WD SE16 640GB drives I replaced my Samsung F1 750GB drives with (too late to return my 1TB drive since I bought it months ago).

Yes but this drive model does ont use all 3 platters. It uses 2 and a half.

I now have two of these in my main system (they are very fast !!! ),with a Raptor X as a boot drive.

I yesterday ordered 2 more of these for my wifes system,to replace her old Maxtor 80Gb drives.Great price and excellent performance, plus they are damn quiet !

I asked the guy that built my rig to test out one of the F1s versus the pair of 74GB 16mb Raptors in RAID0 ...

Here's the results he posted:

I plan to configure these F1s in a RAID0 as well & run benchies when I get my build on Wednesday. Hopefully, they fair better, but the Raptors are still king right now.

You're comparing the F1 to a pair of raptors in raid right? I wouldn't expect the F1 to come out ahead. I think comparing the individual drives to one another or both in raid would yield much more interesting results.

Now to decide between this drive or the 1TB on buy.com decisions decisions haha.

I wish TB drives were reasonable right now, i'd prefer to pick up 2 of them over 2 of these :)

There's a ton of bad reviews of the samsung F1 drives on Newegg. Apparently they're highly unreliable.

Agreed, thus the comment below the screenshot ;)

Since these are relatively new, the only people to speak up are going to be the ones that received a bad drive or the people that are idiots & don't know WTF they are doing.

You could look at every other brand/selection of drives there & see the same thing for each. Once these drives are used a bit, you'll see people start commenting that they purchased a couple more to add to their array blah blah blah...

I'm about to grab two tomorrow. Ugh, I need to save money.

ZZF does some wacky price changes though. For instance, if you add these drives to your wishlist, they show up as $124.99.

There was some deal the other day with an XFX card, it was listed as $199 and a rebate around 4AM. Low and behold 4 hours later when I went
to buy it it was 229 and rebate.

I do love ZZF, but I'm not sure if they've got a monkey doing the pricing edits or they really are THAT fluid when it comes to the numbers.

anyone know if zzf's shipping is similar to newegg where they just wrap it in bubblewrap or do they use something better?

I'm not talking about bitter whiners. I'm talking about a large number of reviews that documented their issues rather well, including a number of people who bought multiple drives and had one of more DOAs/quick deaths. I haven't rates this that since IBM's DeathStar drives or WD's JB series.

It's an amazingly well-performing drive, but folks might be wise to wait for a revision.

All of Newegg OEM's have these type of reported failures. Blame their shipping department. Mine drive was shipped in the clamshell surrounded by a single layer of bubble wrap in a box of packing peanuts. One side near the edge completely popped, but the drive was fine otherwise. Great drive, well worth the money.

I just got one from ZZF it was in a plastic oem shell, then encased in 3/8" foam- a built up cube shaped piece, not envelope or just wrapped, then in a box surrounded by peanuts.

Overall an excellent wrap job. They add the extra layer of foam over newegg- the OEM drives I've received from them were just in an anti static bag and in a box surrounded by peanuts.

Agreed that ZZF appears to go the extra step with packaging the drive inside of foam inserts.

Largely, the real concern is if the drive is going to be moving inside of the packaging during shipping--The bubblewrap/loose in peanuts is going to possibly complicate matters...The word about Newegg's shipping method for OEM drives appears to change quite a bit, from what it looks like; You'll never get a straight answer so far as Newegg shipping for that reason alone.
