Would an X2 5000+ Black Edition be a Brisbane for sure? Or is there a chance it's a Windsor? The site I'm looking at buying from doesn't specify.
I have an X2 3800+ right now, but I noticed the 5000+ is only $89, so I'm tempted.

Thanks.

Well I am sure that a 5000 BE is a brisbane, I have never seen a 90nm x2 5000 BE for sale.

5000+ Black Edition is Brisbane G2 Steping, will hit 3ghz on stock volts.

5600+ Black will hit the shops soon, it willl also be G2 steping brisbane, hopefuly be able to hit 3.2 - 3.3 on stock volts. although they are the exact same chip but with different default multi, im hoping that they are cherry picked and can go a bit higher than the 5000+ BE

Are you sure? According to this link it comes in both flavors.

The thead that you sent the link for is wrong and the reason it wrong, is because it probably copied from AMDs own site, and belive it or not that is wrong too. You see windsors and brisbanes of the same name have two differences windsors have more cache and brisbanes have a half multiplier (10.5, 11.5 12.5). making all brisbanes run 100mhz faster to make up for the lack of cache. see the two chips below run at the same ghz, but different names

AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor Dual Core 2.6GHz 2 x 1 MB L2 Cache

AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane Dual Core 2.6GHz 2 x 512kb L2 Cache

and the brisbane of the same name run 100mhz faster
AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane Dual Core 2.7GHz 2 x 512kb L2 Cache

Prices in AMD's are supposed to be coming down early april (April 7th?) so maybe you should wait until then.

We had a post about prices droping in this section. I only read the first page of posts so i don't know much.

Well that's interesting, I was not aware of the upcoming price drop. It may not be how much lower a 5000+ can go, much maybe some of the higher end chips will drop to the 5000+'s level. It's worth waiting a few weeks I guess.

I'm thought about C2D, but replacing my mobo effectively doubles my cost.
Then of course I think: "Well if I'm spending that much money anyway, I might as well get a Q6600".
Logic is harmful to my bank account :)

I recently made the switch from a s939 X2 3800 to an an 5000 BE. I am very satisfied with it. I can get the system to run at 3 GHz, and be stable in everyday use. But for some reason most of my games crash. I turned it down to 2.9 GHz, and have no problems. Not sure about what's going on w/ it, maybe PSU.

Anyways, if you're on a tight budget the 5000BE is a steal for it's price. Especially if you have an AM2 based system.

Most if not all Brisbanes are 65nm 65watt 2 x 512k L2 cache and 100mhz faster compared to Windors, most of which are 1 x 1MB L2 cache and 90nm cores(90-something watt TDP).

The 5800+ is rated at 76W according to the early bios support from a motherboard manufacturer. The 5600+ had two figures listed and one was 65W, the other 89W? (which doesn't make sense compared to the above obviously). Still much better than Windsors in that area.
