Dell 2408WFP Now Available

Well guys, after reading this thread, and not even having my 2408 yet, you guys got me thinking. I decided to step up to a the DoubleSight 26" IPS panel and not keep the Dell.

I just received the 2408 yesterday, installed it, and am putting it up for sale. There's not dead pixel's and zero back light bleed, but the input lag just has me thinking the whole time I'm gaming. It's really not that bad of a monitor and has a really nice picture, but I just can't help wondering.

If anyone is interested, pm me. This thing might have been turned on a total of 1 hour. I don't have enough posts to put in up in FS, but I've been over on OCForums for almost three years and have plenty of Heat. I'll let it go for much less then retail too.

Hi,

I'm a newbie to this forum, but wanted some info on the 2408WFP vs the 2407WFP please, if possible!

Basically I'm searching for a reasonably priced display to use for digital illustration work. The screen needs to have consistant colour and brightness, i.e no significant gradients. If anyone has the new Aluminium iMac, I would describe those screens as having a significant gradient problem - so basically I'm searching for a display that it much better than the imac in it's colour/brightness consistency, but I don't want to spend a fortune! Does the 2408WFP have any major gradient issues?

I can find the 2407WFP for sale about £50 cheaper. Is the 2408WFP significantly better or is the 2407 a good display?

Are there any siginificant colour problems with the 2408? One poster is describing a problem with blue tones having a greenish hue on this display. Is this a problem for everyone, or just a few faulty units?

Any advice much appreciated - Many thanks!

The left side of the screen is noticeably brighter than the right side. Personally I don't care about such things but you should keep that in mind for your decision.

You can just return it to DELL for a full refund if you are within 21 days.

Thanks for the info enjay. Do you or anyone else know if the 2407WFP also has a noticeable gradient?

Well, just recieved my new 2408WFP and it's looking a lot better from the start. Instead of the red tint of the previous broken one, this is far more neutral which is great. This is also purely subjective, but I think the input lag is less on this one too - moving the mouse isn't as hit and miss as it was on my first. Haven't noticed any dead pixels yet nor is there any real noticable backlight bleed.

This difference is so vast infact that I wonder if this is a different panel than the first produced.

I just got my dell 2408. Wow I am impressed. My old one is Sony 17 inch, SDM-HS73 (I bought it for $1000.00 in 2003). Huge difference. I love it.

I thought i'd share some info with you guys regarding the dell 2408 WFP.

I have now had one monitor replaced due to:

uneven backlighting
red hue on white backgrounds (rainbow effect)
red halo around black type on grey background
backlight bleed at corners (especially left side)

I am now about to exchange my second due to the same if slightly less severe problems as the first.

When i spoke to dell this morning I said there was no point sending yet another unless there has been a revision to the 2408 screen as i suspected they would all suffer the same issues.

They have assured me that the new screen will be REV A001 and all faults have been rectified. I have to wait Monday/Tuesday next week for a replacement.

I will let you know how it pans out !

Cheers Guys

Roger

I just got my 2408WFP today. Everything looked great until I opened FireFox. It was then that I noticed this dark-ish spot near near the center of the distance between the center of the screen and the top left corner. I thought it was from my fingers at first. I ran Dead Pixel Buddy and didn't see any dead pixels, but did see that dark spot about the size of a penny. I tried to massage it, but nothing happened.

Also, the bottom left and bottom right of the screen look kind of pink when the background is any light color.
Now I have to call Dell to get this exchanged.

Edit:
Just read the couple of posts above mine. Looks like I should have asked them to send me a Rev. A001 as well.

Also, just noticed a dead pixel near the center of the screen. Saw it when I was posting on a forum. Opened up Dead Pixel Buddy again and yes, there is a dead pixel there.

let us know if there is an A01 sent, I'd be very surprised tbh as it hasn't been out very long, they haven't really had much chance to collate info about the issues and arrange a fix. We will see though, here's hoping!

Hey again. I'm looking for some advice on how to "deal with Dell". I have a 2408 and like most, have not been happy with some of its shortcomings. I would like to call Dell and either request the revision or if they deny me I will ask for refund. I've never dealt with Dell in this respect and am looking for suggestions on how to deal with them. Also i'm not sure what department to call. Thx.

Call Dell support at: 1-800-915-3355. When prompted for a service tag number you can enter 7 zeros (0000000), which will direct you to Electronics and Accessories as your monitor may or may not have a service tag of it's own.

After telling them what's wrong, they will tell you to try a few things (reset to factory default) as they work through their script before getting to replacement. They might tell you that they won't know what is being shipped until it leaves the warehouse however (at least that's the experience trying to replace a 2005wfp).

If you're luck you might get a rep from an American site. Sometimes you get patched to an outsource in another country (so what I've read). In my experience I once was with a rep from Canada (where I live) and I was done with them in 5 min. Another time I was with someone with a heavy accent and was on the phone with them for close to an hour... they ask me my name then tell me to hold on for 2 min. (in reality I'm on hold for 4-6min.)... they come back on and ask me to verify my e-mail and then put me on hold for 2 min. (in reality I'm on hold for 4-6 min again)... they ask me for a order number etc. You get the picture.

Also make sure you verify your address. If you ordered from Dell in the past and then moved and ordered again under the new address they will still have the old address in their database. From my experience it looks like they have multiple files on one customer. I once asked for a 2nd replacement and it was sent to the old address even though the first replacement was sent to my current address.

I've only ever gotten an American agent when calling customer service for small business. Everytime I call Dell's customer service for home / home office, I get a foreign agent.

Also, I just put my 2408WFP next to my 2407WFP rev.A04 and the A04 looks much "nicer". The whites are actually white and "soft". The 2408WFP's white has some kind of tint to it. Not sure what the tint's color is. I wish I could swap my 2407WFP and 2408WFP's panels.

Not sure if anyone has posted this already, but the card reader in the 2408WFP is compatible with SDHC cards.

hi guys, sorry for this noobie question. got my PS3 to connect my 2408. I am planning to use the HDMI to connect to this 2408 dell monitor but where can i output my sound to since i cant use the monitor? I know there is a optical output however my speakers is those analog type eg Klipsch promedia 4.1. Any advise to connect for the sound?

My new 2408WFP doesn't work when connected through DVI. It works fine on VGA, but I'd prefer DVI. All I get on DVI is a black screen, after which my monitor goes to sleep. This happens on both DVI inputs the 2408WFP has.

Before the 2408WFP, I temporarily had a 2407WFP-HC hooked up through DVI and that worked perfectly fine. What could be the problem causing my 2408WFP not to work on exactly the same graphics card port? BTW, my graphics card is manufactured by Club 3D and based on a GeForce FX 5900 chipset.

Did you already try manually change input signal from VGA to DVI via display's own OSD menu?

Thanks for your reply. I tried switching manually, tried the auto detect mode, tried another DVI cable, tried the second DVI entry on the 2408...
Could it be that my video card is outdated? Have their been any changes to the DVI standard lately?

Well despite some of the negative comments here in this thread. The 2408WFP seems to be a great and solid monitor and I'm going to get one as soon as I can.

I have 2 questions though:

1. Can anyone confirm if there really is a revised version in existence?

2. What is the best preset to use for calibrating to the AdobeRGB colorspace?

http://monitortest.blogspot.com/ keeps talking about calibrating to AdobeRGB colors but there isn't a preset, only for sRGB. Is the reviewer using the default/desktop preset or something?

p.s. Why isn't everyone suffering from colorbanding upgrading their drivers, I've read atleast 12 times now that they fixed it by changing/upgrading their drivers. It's worth a shot ain't it?

p.p.s. The constant "input lag" b*tching is getting old.

Got my new screen this morning but they sent a 2707 WFP rev A02

Not sure what to do now ?

It's a mighty BIG .... but the colour appears to be a lot better and no backlight bleed but there is still the problem with the left side being lighter than the right. I haven't a clue why they sent 27" instead of the 2408, perhaps they are trying to stop me from complaining with a bigger model...

Dell are apparently calling sometime today to check i am satisfied, i will keep you posted on how the story unfolds.... who know I might end up with a 3008 at this rate !! :D

Cheers

Roger

Dell promised me a that there was a revision to the 2408 but this morning when the replacement arrived it turned out to be a 2707 rev A02 so I would guess that either:

there is no 2408 revision available yet
dell have sent me the 2707 monitor in error
OR they are trying sweeten me up and stop me from complaining !!

:D

A user from Dell's community forums states the following regarding the 2408: "The worst thing to me is that this monitor suffer of strong color banding (on gradients). I have tried every preset (from factory preset to monitor standard preset) and I also have hardware-calibrated the monitor (via the eye-one GretagMacbeth calibrator) but the banding doesn't go away. My settings are Brightness:30, Contrast:62, User-Color with R:82, G:89, B:86. The monitor is connected via DVI-D through an NVidia 6600GT. The color temperature was set to 6500K with gamma at 2.2. I've made the gradients banding test with some tools around the web with the same results (strong banding)."

Hope this helps!

I didn't read all 26 pages of this thread, but there is mixed feelings between awesome and bad and I'm totally confused.

I am planning on picking up this monitor either this friday or monday, should I hold off on it?

yeah i don't know man. I've been watching this thread for a month or so.

i have a 2407wfp at home and love it.

I just ordered(monday, 3-17-2008) a 2408wfp, so i will have dual 24"s.

My 2407 is amazing. My only complaint with it would be it was too bright, so i turned down the brightness. I think all these dudes are just OCD or something. I have no plans of doing any sort of color banding or tests or anything. I'm going to get my 2408 and turn down the brightness and then enjoy. I can understand if someone is doing graphics artwork or something, and the colors matter. It seems to me like some of these cats are just trying to be [H]ard and want the absolute best..i guess....

All this complaining seems a bit annoying to me. As long as i don't have any dead pixels in the middle of the screen i will be happy.

Either way, the monitor is supposed to arrive on friday, 3-21-08. So i'll come back and post what i got, when i get it.

So yeah, i love my 2407, and i hope my new 2408 is just as pretty.

I suppose i am a bit fussy about my monitor as i sit in front of it for 10hrs a day building websites but the colour balance and uneven backlight on 2408 i received was POOR and the second was not much better..

But that said, Dell are a fantastic company to deal with, if you are unhappy with your purchase they will ensure you don't stay that way.

Despite the problems i experienced with my 2408 i would not buy a monitor from anyone else period.

If you have any doubts about the 2408 and you can afford the difference go for a 2707 they are awsome !!

Roger

^ yeah i just meant people complaining because this thread is almost 30 pages long! Not you specifically. Let us know how your 2707 turns out.

see ya bro.

This is my first purchase on dell. After reading so much cons for this monitor, I'm afraid of my dell 2408 before it arrives. But actually it doesn't so bad. I'm not a pro for monitor.
All I find out the 2408's problem are:
The left side a little brighter.
I've used dead pixel tester and find out one stuck pixel.
The color seems saturated, especially for red.
Look awesome for PS3!! And also my PS2!!

I don't understand why Dell.ca has the 2407-HC and the 2408-HC on the same page for the same price. Lower the price of the 2407 already!

A couple of days ago they had the 3007WFP-HC for $1299.99, I was sooo ready to buy it until they bumped it back to $1699.99.

I'll wait for the 3007WFP-HC to drop again. If it does, I wont let it slip again. Judging from the reviews on there, the 3007WFP-HC goes on sale very often.

I got my replacement 2408WFP today. It's a Rev. A00. I don't think there are any A01s yet.

Anyway, this new one is great! The colors are very similar, if not exactly like my A04 2407WFP. No red tint like the first 2408WFP I received. It doesn't have any backlight bleed or dead / stuck pixels either. Right now, it's perfect so I'm not gonna go look for anything else that might be wrong with it.

Anyone know how to get into the 2408WFP's service / hidden menu?

Have you tried Quickgamma to turn down the red channel? It look great when I turn down red/green channel and turn blue channel up.

First, turn off the power. Then holding the "menu" and "+" key and turn on the power. Then touch the "-" key.
