Yeah, I have a friend who has played COD4 since it's release. He's a real good player
and about a week ago he downloaded a mod for COD4 along with several of the rest of us.
The problem is...his game now won't work at all. He lost ability to load COD4 completely
and was forced to reinstall which now is causing him to take a long time to load and
he keeps getting disconnected when he finally gets into a game.

He says he has used a reg cleaner and done numerous virus scans but can't come up
with anything that helps.

Any suggestions as to what he might try....what's causing this problem...etc?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

System Restore.

While technically it can hide a virus or whatnot... it can get you out of situations like this (And if you know you have a virus in a restore point anyways- you can remove it).

I personally leave it on. Only downside is the space it eats up.

I know he's tried system restore.

In fact he's done everything except reformat the entire disk.

He's uninstalled the game and reinstalled it twice and whatever is causing the problem

didn't go away with that process. He's getting kicked from the servers for packet loss

and everything.

is he removing all remnants of the folders too?

Some mods have sloppy uninstallers and leave crap in your Application Data or My Documents folders sometimes [or that may just be me reminiscing back to my Tribes 2 days when mods were a dime a dozen]

Yep- sounds like it isn't all the way gone.
After uninstalling check around for any folders left behind, delete them all. I'd do a quick look through the registry as well, and delete any keys it may have left behind.
THEN install the game back.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. The traces of the game aren't gone.
I wonder how easy it is to find the right files in the registry?

Check under HKLM/Software...

Oh ....that's cool. Thanks.

Ok, he's got it working now but he was a couple shots short of having all the guns in

gold and now he's back to square one. He's taking it well though. Starting all over cause he

still enjoys the heck outta the game. He'll have all the guns in gold again in no time.

Just a shame he didn't save his profile before this happened.

also. clear out the prefetch folder in windows. since he runs COD so much its prolly full of those but the new install doesn't recognize the old so he should try and get it to refresh and add the new ones
