How do I find out the address of my incoming and outgoing mail servers? also how do I find out what kind of authentication is used? trying to use imap to hook up iphone to exchange. is there somwhere in the exchange I can find these things?

we are on server 2003 and exchange 2003

thanks

exchange doesnt have incomming outgoing so to say. Its just an exchange server, and if you dont have that option on the iphone you'll have to setup your sever or imap or pop3 or whatever else you want to use

then why is the first thing apple tech asked for when i started this was the names of my incoming and outgoing server. and the way they are authenticated

You should be able to access all of that in the exchange management console. First you need to check to see if the IMAP server is running, if not then you would need to get it up and running and have it start automatically. By default the address of the server would be the fqdn of the server exchange is installed on.

wher in the console? i know where Imap is. but when i try to enable it it tells me there is another app on the port or the ip and there is another app using that info and there can only be one.

I know I have to enable imap and for smtp but they keep giving me errors. and I do not understand what you mean by there are not internal and external address. why would they ask then?

i have to know the incoming and outgoing names for the info on the phone imap needs to be configured for the server and then ports ahve to be opened up. correct? unfortunatley i can't seem to get this just so.

that is the article I am working off of and the instructions I am currently following. when i go to create the new imap servers they both say there is a confilct and the port or ip is already assigned.

as well i have no idea about whether or not we have a ssl, i bet no, but that whole thing is referenced too.

the tutorial is great but I cannot create the imap servers or find the out and in addresses. tthat is why I am here asking

Okay here's the deal, and this is what you're gonna need to know:
1, Are you gonna try to access the server via your intranet or over the internet.
2. Does your company normally make exchange email available over the internet that is not OWA
3. If they do, find out what the firewall/router rules are.
4 Look into the services mmc and find to see if there's an imap server already running

To be honest, it would be best to spend the $259 and call MS support to resolve this issue proper.

1) internet iphones in the field.
2) only owa traffic is for the 2 blackberrys we have that will go away soon otherwise no s=exteral access outside of vpn
3) see # 2
4) services says imap is running but disabled on startup and the default Imap in mse manager has a red x on it as if it were disabled. it will not start either keep getting error message

look at the moment i cannot get imap to start. keeps erroring. i set up the imap according to the tutorial and then can't start it. i can't get past step one let alone anything else. can't do anything unless imap is enabled and running which it is not and will not let me.

what to do about that?

Hmm check the email settings on the blackberries, the imap server in use is probably linked to the blackberries and a BES (if you have one running.)

You're gonna need to figure out how to make your exchange server accessible, via VPN clients on the iphones, or setting up SSL IMAP and secure SMTP on the server and getting the proper traffic sending/receiving to it.

gonna have to be the latter with ssl and smtp but doesn't ssl require a cert? not familiar with that.

i can't even get the imap server to start it keeps erroring out. services says it is on but it is disabled in the console and it is marked to disabled on startup in services. so how can it be on? and why can't i start it?

While you don't have to get an SSL cert from verisign and the like, getting one makes life easier.

As for the current problem, it sounds like there is another service running on the same port as your exchange imap server is set to check to see what services are running on port 143 (IMAP) and port 993 (SSL IMAP) to see what it is. Those are the default ports for IMAP and secure IMAP. A faster way to get yourself up and running is to create a new virtual imap server in exchange and just use a different port.

ok i got imap4 running now (it was disabled) found in services that there was a restart option in the imap4 service and when I did the imap4 started running. then I went to the smtp virtual server folder and found there was one already running. seems like it has little key icons next to 2 ip's, one is the server and the other is a different ip i have never seen (127.0.0.1) then I added the users (myself) in the relay area like it said in the article. now i still am kinda uncertain as to what incoming and outgoing are but when I added myself in smtp i saw that it referred to my account when it found it as "[email protected]" does this tell me anything?

in addition now i have to add another layer of dickery. I have a cisco gateway device sitting in front of my sever. gotta think that the ports (143,25, and 993) are probably not open on that right? so even if imap and smtp servers are right the gateway is going to block it anyway right? does that mean I would have to open those ports on the gateway as well?

so currently i have the Imap4 default server running/enabled, the smtp server was already running so I just added the user account (me, [email protected]l) to that under relay. then the gateway issue, and still ahve not nailed doen infor for in and out server names

thanks for the help guys, slowly making a bit of progress and learning a ton.

any ideas? think i need to open the ports on the gateway to let the iphne in and mail out through the virtual servers right?

fyi- got it figured did not need internal and outgoing server names. I used the outside IP attached to the server as the incoming and outgoing sever names and it works like a charm.

thanks

iphone software v2 is going to have exhange support and push email i think. might want to check into that

That was correct,

Your external IP address is the outbound / inbound address that the Apple folks were looking for.

2 ip's, one is the server and the other is a different ip i have never seen (127.0.0.1)

wow are you serious? why are you even on this server to begin with? or even better who in charge gave you access to this server? why am i the only one that caught this comment

My thoughts exactly.

If you are unable to figure out what your IP address is, or even your external IP address, have no idea what a loopback IP address is- you don't even have a grasp of the simple fundamentals of networking.

You're over your head, definitely... and quite honestly, when reading through this, I keep thinking "gunna screw something up, gunna screw something up".

yeah v2 will have it. I just signed up for the beta. but no one got an iphone till i could make it work on exchange. i'll just move over to active synch when v2 comes out but till then this'll work.

sad thing is i didn't get one, (iphone) i had to buy one.
