So i am looking into building a Windows Home Server. I have the following components:

E6300
INtel Dg33TL
1gb ram
300gb hd
BFG 88600gts oc

All i need is the OS. Since most of the above was laying around, I really don't want to throw $170 at the software if I don't have to.

I would LIEK to use WHS, but are there alternatives that do similar things (auto backup of attached pc's etc)?

There are ways to accomplish everything that WHS does, without actually using WHS. However, do the work as well, work as well with each other, and are combined in a nice, easy to use interface? Probably not.

you can get server 2003 from microsoft for free if you are.

WHS is built on Server 2003 Small Business Edition, with some added functionality thrown on top. It simplifies a lot of the permissions stuff/file sharing/drive pooling that is a little more cumbersome in the server realm. If the value of your time isn't that high, that'll work just fine.

(In either event - you don't need anything beyond integrated video for file sharing...and in fact, WHS is designed for headless operation.)

Most of WHS can be implemented in other systems, of course, but I really don't believe there is an easier or better backup system anywhere on any system.
