NEC LCD2690

Another person PM's me about the same. I told him to switch spectraview off and on again in OSD and then it worked for him. Try the same. :)

In the info tag, you should see under model SV 2690 after this change (instead of LCD2690WUXi).

:

This is the problem. I can’t access On\off option for Specrtaview. If I press in TagE menu “input+ down arrow”, nothing happens.

You need to press and hold select, not input.

Hold down input button while powering on the screen. This is to activate advanced menu.

Press menu and choose tag E (its where the information is in the advanced menu).

Pressing select + down gives you option to turn spectraview settings on/off. Choose on.

Hi guys, I posted this question in another thread, but I can't seem to find it.

I have a NEC LCD2490wuxi. I bought a copy of Spectraview II and a Monaco Optix XR DTP94 quite a little while ago. I am using Vista 64bit which has no support for the Monaco Optix, so I am unable to calibrate at all.

Is it possible to setup the 2490 on a friends computer that has XP and calibrate to the LUT or create a ICM profile and then port it over to Vista 64? Would that work?

Hi! Yes, you can. Your probe should work though. Here's from the readme file of Spectraview 2:
X-Rite DTP94 / MonacoOPTIX-XR

There is also a * next to it.

* Drivers available on the SpectraView II CD-ROM or in the \Program Files\NEC Display Solutions\SpectraView II\Drivers folder after installing SpectraView.

You need to use the drivers that comes with Spectraview. I had the same issue with Spectraview profiler if I used any drivers except for the ones that comes with Spectraview profiler.

I had to go to the extent of tagging "delete drivers" in Vista 32 when doing this and then installing the spectraview drivers for my probe instead.

Maybe I am missing something, but on my monitor select and input are same bottoms. Input becomes Select after you press menu.

Sorry, my mistake. Of course input becomes select. :)

It should work. If nothing happens, then they have changed this now. Do you have a US screen? Will from NEC knows about this, so they might have turned off this feature in US screens now (they don't use it for spectraview 2, only EU uses it for spectraview profiler), or maybe they have moved it to another setting? I have confirmation that it works on US screens as well, but thats some months ago.

There are combinations you can try. On my screen, under tag E, up+left gives me info on how long the screen has been in use.
Reset+left+right gives the factory menu.
Under normal menu at info screen, select+exit gives option about ddr spread spectrum (press exit if it appears). Reset+left+right gives factory menu.
etc.
Try the combinations and see if its been moved.
I don't think tag D under advanced menu gives me any "easter egg", so thats a possible position if they have moved it.

Under D tag I found no working combinations.:(

...In mine (and many others) opinion, aRGB makes better use of the colors then sRGB in 8-bit...
Tamlin I am not sure why you launched into that explaining what you know we both already know. But here is a key point we differ on, I do not prefer sRGB or aRGB. I think you missed my point in that regard. My only concern for a color space is that a I am viewing a given image in the color space it was created. That's it. There are arguments to be made for sRGB or aRGB in a 8 bit world. At the end of the day I just want to see what was intended.

...The problem comes when you choose the 2490 and plan to use anything else then sRGB. Inside a color managed environment, having a narrow gamut represents a problem, since your image will be clipped. There will be a range of colors outside the sRGB screen you won't be capable of viewing....
When have I ever disagreed on that point? I consistently have advised anyone that needs to do color critical print work that wide gamut monitor may be a better choice. If its electronic, then of course we stop at sRGB at least until it changes. But even when it does, it will be a compatible color space nothing is lost.

...What Oleg from X-bit labs means, is that what looks good is entirely subjective. Color spaces is made for things to look the same, not nessesarily the best.
Yes, what looks good we can agree is subjective. What you or Oleg think looks good is moot. An image needs to be viewed in the correct color space or the colors are completely wrong. You have made it quite clear that you like incorrect colors outside of a color managed space. That doesn't in any way change that the colors wrong. The only subjectivity is your taste. It also doesn't matter how many people agree with your preference or not. Just as it didn't matter when the most of the world thought the Earth was flat.

...If I look out my window at the same sunset day in and day out, and suddenly one day there is a beautiful colorspill over the sky, I wouldn't be grumpy at God for not using the same "color space" and that every sunset should look the same...
That is a terrible analogy. You are implying that a wide gamut monitor adds color to sRGB images which you know is just not true.

What I think is interesting is all I have ever pointed out are issues with standards. Rather than simply conceding the point this but simply stating you prefer it based on subjective reasons and I assume print work, you consistently ump through hoops to justify your preference on other grounds.

Tamlin, you don't need a graph to make that point.;)

Finaly, after long wait monitor safely arrived today.
Nicely packed. First thing I saw was A 1 revision, so I tought old monitor....
When I took it out I had wooooow efect; it is heavy and very solid product.
After few houres I can say: This is Perfect monitor. No bad pixels, no bleading, backlight is even all over the land.
Nice colours, perfect text size ( I am 43)....so many options to adjust.
Now I have to learn what to do until I find calibrator to calibrate it.
Thanks Tamlin for advice, monitor is worth every peny

This is the same model with the SpectraViewII™ Color Calibration Solution, which combines a color measure♥ment sensor with sophisticated software. The result is a highly accu♥rate, reliable, repeatable and feature-rich display calibration and profiling solution.

Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering if I had missed a difference in the specs between the two models. So apparently not, and the only difference is the SpectraView 2 kit (software and hardware) calibrator that comes with the "SV" model. Thanks

Are current owners of the 2690 happy with their purchase? I see there are many mentions of problems such as poor backlighting, visible lines in the corners, noticeable noise etc.

Were these simply problems with earlier revisions, or is this screen still inferior to the 2490? (besides gamut and the extra 1.5 inch)

I just placed an order for the 2690 but they dont have the SV version here. It's going to take 4 weeks for it to arrive at the shop. Anyone from Hong Kong know where I can buy the Spectraview 2 kit? I cant seem to find it on the NEC local site.

Better yet, anyone know where I can buy it online?

you can only get it from the NEC website as far as i know. thats where i bought mine from.

But it will cost you more than the package, $249 instead of $150-175 :( They ship only in the USA here if you buy from Nec website.)

the package from the nec website will be the better deal than buying a one eye display2 and spectraview software separately

Thanks. I called the local reseller where I placed the order and he told me it comes with the Spectraview 2 software without the HW calibrator. They don't have the HW calibrator in Hong Kong. I guess I have to buy one. Any suggestions as to which HW calibrator works best?

Hey all,

I'm looking at the 26" due to my wife's bad vision. She'd like to run native res so the fonts don't look funky. I don't do graphics work, but see the advantage of wide gamut in the long run. In the short run, do people find the sRGB setting works well?

Thanks,
BoB

P.S. I'm not a gamer and not very picky about color unless the difference is egregious. Do any lay-people with this monitor feel that it's that bad?

Has anyone been able to find this monitor (esp. the SV version) at all in Canada? It's sold out EVERYWHERE. :(

I ordered a 2490WUXI-SV version 3 weeks ago and still no monitor at home. : ( I'm in Montreal. It's not really sold out, they never got their hands on to many here in Canada.

Where did you get it? I live in Montreal too.

I checked a ton of sites and they are all on backorder. I wonder what is up with that. In europe they have a bunch available.

Tamlin and other owners of 2690wuxi,

Could you please take a look if your 2690wuxi does this:

When I turn down brightness lower than 35-40 (best seen when it is 0) I can see horizontal waves across the whole screen going in vertical direction. I can see it clearly with the brightness turned to 0 and with a monochromatic dim background (e.g. 126/126/126). The other settings were left as default although looks like it is just brightness that is critical for this behavior.

Could you please check if your monitor does this?

Thank you!

it's the same with the states. spectraview version just can't be found.

you could certainly by the monitor separately and then add the spectraview software once you get it.

I'm waiting for mine since a month now. : ( and even the 2490 alone is not in stock here in Canada.

And I don't understand why, is it that much complicated to just put a SpectraView in a box and ship it ? I'm close to order one from the USA or buy something else.

i received today my 2690...everything perfect zero noise no bleeding and no dead pixels...very good panel ....i play cod4 online and everything perfect no lag no blur..very fast!

but i want to change the base with an ergotron arm...do you know if LX Desk Mount Black LCD Arm can handle this panel? has anyone tested?

I want a new screen to replace my Samsung 213T and an old Eizo 20" CRT.
I'll be mostly using it under GNU/Linux (=usually no color management) but will also do photo editing with XP & PS.

I would get the 2490 if it was available here, but it's not.
Is there an "easy" way to display at least roughly accurate sRGB-colors on the 2690, without software support? Like turning down the saturation? I will buy a Colorimeter so I will be able to calibrate it if I have to.
The sRGB mode on the Dell 2408WFP has too little saturation. Seems like the NEC has the same problem?

Is there no solution for the "color management handicapped"..?

I have a 2690 too. The sRGB mode is set in the factory and cannot be changed - contrast and brightness can of course be tweaked, but not gamma or temperature. I don't think it's possible to customise any of the other modes to emulate sRGB. The display is designed for wide colour gamut use.

The only 26"+ lcd I know of that can operate and be calibrated in wide colour gamut and sRGB is the EIZO CG301W.

Most, but not all, of my material is for the web so I would like to have both accurate sRGB and aRGB available.

The 2690 is great in all other respects and I would happily go to the 30" NEC that is appearing soon if it had tweakable sRGB. But I think it is the same as the 2690 in this respect.

The EIZO would be my choice if I had £3000 (UK).

Hm I really don't understand why it's not possible. My Panasonic AE2000 videoprojector does exactly that, offer a perfect D65 SRGB preset.

I mean all that's needed is reducing saturation in a certain way resp. translating values to the lower gamut. I'm not a graphics designer but I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible, especially since color profile aware programs can do it in software.

This is what I had back from NEC some time ago -

"Thank you for your query. The sRGB function is by definition always locked as it is a standard, however it is possible to alter the colour temperatures on both the LCD2690WUXi and the LCD3090WQXi via the preset user modes on the OSM if this is what you'd like to do."

When one does adjust the preset colour temperatures (so that they are set to 6500k) and use the same brightness and contrast settings, the effect is quite different from the factory set sRGB setting. I have tried without success to use the programmable mode to calibrate using Eye One Display 2 hard and software but could not complete the process because I could not alter the colour temperature in this mode using the OSM controls.

It is possible I have misunderstood but I can say that you cannot just check and recalibrate the sRGB mode from time to time.

It is complicated and I have ended up just relying on the factory set sRGB mode.

Download the 2690 user's manual and have a look for yourself.

Well I don't want to calibrate the built-in sRGB mode, I just want to tone down the native mode to something that resembles sRGB.

But it seems that it is not possible due to a limitation of the Spectraview software.

Where are people in the US buying the NEC 2690? It seems no one has it, is something going on? This seems odd to me given the monitor has been out for awhile..

The 2690 is great in all other respects and I would happily go to the 30" NEC that is appearing soon if it had tweakable sRGB.

My understanding is that it's not a matter of having tweakable sRGB. The only reason the 2490 looks better for sRGB in the calibrated mode is that the standard gamut is much closer to sRGB in the first place. Therefore, both color managed and non-managed images come out looking about the same. There are some threads on dpreview about this, Then again, I'm not an expert and read so many different explanations at this point, don't take my word for it.

Dell.com has pretty much every NEC model available and they have some good coupons here and there. They even have the grayscale nec's that go for over $4,500 lol

Dell currently lists both the 2490 and 2690 as out of stock. It seems that most vendors in the US are drop-shipping their orders to NEC directly. Provantage lists 2 x LCD2490WUXi in stock and a few more of the 2690, but none of the SV model.

CDW told me on the phone they were expecting more the 2nd week of April. Perhaps a new batch goes out then. Tomorrow is payday, but I guess I'll have to wait.
