Well as we all know HD-DVD has met its maker and we should brace ourselves to see price drops of the drives across the boards, specifically that of the Xbox 360 drive.

Seems K-Mart beat some to the game. Via their website it is now $49.99 Some people have reported that its OOS, but either way you may have better luck price matching it to CC, BB, or other similar stores that do PMs.

Update:

Looks like both Best Buy and Circuit City have updated their online and in-store prices for the drive for $49.99

Chalk up Microsoft to the ever growing list of dealers cutting back the drive's price:

This is smoking for people who already have a large collection of HD-DVDs. Because you can connect it to your computer, this will allow you to rip the movies to your hard drive and burn them to Blu-Ray discs in the future when Blu-Ray blank media is cheap.

I was passing by a local Super K here in Milwaukee. On a lark, I went in and asked about the Xbox HD-DVD player. The clerk said yes, they had them. She had just marked them down to $49.99 this morning. I picked up one.

Since it came packed with King Kong, and was purchased before the 2/28 deadline (for the 5 free discs by mail), I figured it was worth the $50.

Is that for some kmart only? I called my local BK and the guy said he had one left but he didn't know of any mail in offer. I would get this if the offer was valid.

I checked a Kmart I was near, and they had them still marked (and in the computer) for $129.99, so YMMV

Was going to hock it on eBay (not for a profit, the free movies) and it says it's in stock.

Just won't go into my cart. Tried IE/FF

Does this upscale normal DVD's?

I'm thinking about it for an HTPC... later down the road, I don't own an HDTV... yet... but if I could rip HD-DVDs and store them on the server, play with HTPC that's going to be a lot easier/cheaper.. :) but if it could upscale DVD's that would be cool too... although I'm pretty sure the HTPC would be able to do that... with any recent Nvidia/ATI card and DVD drive... rioght?

I called my local BK again and it seems that the deal is on their website and not the store. The manager told me it must be an overstock deal and since they had only one in the store, its not consider overstock. Thats how I understood it anyhow. So I guess I'll have to buy it online. YMMV. Idea out of stock online. I guess its a sign I should just wait for a BR deal.

It's been confirmed that it is OOS online. Kmart has failed to update the page and thus keeps showing up as in-stock, but obviously its out of stock.

There have been numerous people who have been able to PM to BB and Sears. I would try Sears, as they give a 110% PM...

How the hell do you PM to Best Buy? This is an online deal.

Print out a copy of the website page. Technically this is suppose to be taking effect in Kmart stores, but each store is on its own time as far as making this price effective. Some have gotten in-store for this price, others haven't.

I would try Sears again first, not only for the 110% PM but they are a closer competitor.

Obviously its YMMV, but you have a decent chance on your side.

Circuit City all does 110% price match. I might try them tomorrow if I decide I want the addon for my xbox. I'm just a little broke at the moment.

Haha forgot to ask for 110% price-match... oh well...

I was already returning something and the guy had to spend 20 mintues dealing w/ a manager...

But I got it for $39 after tax and my return...

Good score...

Man if only HD dvd weren't DEAD. I see it this way. How many different HD DVDs have been released? Is it worth buying into when there won't be anymore future releases? I just bought American Gangster HD DVD on ebay but it'll probably be the last one I buy as far as new releases.....

My collection of HD dvds is small. Is it worth buying a drive for dead technology now? Or is it better to just get rid of my dvds I have.

So this will work on a PC? If so I might have to try getting one of these. Is it USB?

I wish K-Mart had the store availibility thing like Circuit City and Best Buy has.... :(

I'm asking myself the same thing. Right now there is too much uncertainty. It would be nice if we knew how long it would take for HD DVDs to get re-released on blu ray and if blu ray prices are going to fall. I've looked and there are a lot of HD DVDs that I want but whats the point of getting them if they come out on blu ray this year and BR player prices drop.

Yes it works on PC... plug-and-play with Vista, requires a bit more work w/ XP...

I just installed Vista for media center (I bought that HD tuner stick of woot a few days back) so now I got HD-DVD and this..

$39 for 6 movies and player... that's good for DVD :p

I figure prices will drop, I can grab HD-DVDs for cheap, rip then upgrade to blu-ray when those prices drop.

I just don't plan to pay more than $5-10 for each HD-DVD...

Good luck trying to get them to price match online prices. I know wal-mart refuses too from personal experience.

According to this thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172683) there are over 386 titles. Also note that HD-DVD is region free and thus you can import titles that have yet (and probably won't now) be released here in the states.

I think most people will be getting in on this deal will burn their HD-DVDs to their computer, wait until Blu-Ray media comes down a bit, and burn their videos onto Blu-Ray discs.

Also several people have been successful PM'ing the online price to in-store competitors such as BB and Sears.

If it says "in-stock" they might be more willing to...

That's why I was glad the kmart site was bugged :D!

I'm planning to use it to rip movies... compress them a tiny-bit just because having 15-30 gigs for 1 movie on HDD is not space conscious.. I've seen 8-12gig for HD-DVD rips and they look pretty amazing, not as good as source, but more like 90% of the quality for 50% of the space...

This is a pretty good deal if you are into it for the movies. Actually, I think I'm going to jump on this... I do need an external dvd drive for a couple of my machines.

Heading out to the store :) This is perfect.

It does work with DVD Data and CD Data disks... and regular DVD's and burned DVDs... just checked, stuck a Gentoo Linux distro and my Eee PC DVD install disk... both showed up and files were access copied off of...

I could see if you can boot off it...

This is cheaper than most external DVD drives... plays HD-DVDs on the side too :D

I'm back from the store. $49 for the drive, includes kingkong in the box and 5 mir hd-dvd's.

Awesome. This is an amazing deal. $49 for an external dvd drive that plays HD-DVD's and 6 free movies for my HD-DVD player :D

I ordered one from BB, going to pick it up on the way home.

Not bad for a little external DVD drive.

Ok, I bit, the free King Kong +5 other movies were too hard to pass up
