Any good wireless internet solutions?

I checked out cingular and sprint. Cingular's best data connect is 60.00 for only 5GB a month, Sprint has the same price, but unlimited usage.

I think I read somewhere that even though it says unlimited, it's actually limited.

Can anyone recommend a good provider with a good price that has unlimited amount of usage? I do a lot of heavy download and I imagine I would try to stream music from my home computer to my notebook.

Any advice or recommendations? I have had a really, really bad experience with Sprint, and if it came down to it, I would rather go with nothing then go with Sprint.

Also, has anyone ever tried to play an online game with cell phone internet? Just how bad was the latency?

Get a blackberry and a blackberry data plan from cingular or tmobile. Their pretty expensive but its a better deal than normal. Or if its not a big deal, you can get a wifi phone and just use internet when your in range of a wireless network. I go to school in minneapolis and I can literally walk several blocks without it losing internet because it automatically connects to the strongest network.

sprints unlimited IS unlimited.
its VZW that soft limits you to like 10GB IIRC.
I prefer sprint to ATT

With rev a the latency is much improved. Not great, but much improved and far beyond HSDPA AFAIK.

What is rev a?
And what does HSDPA AFAIK mean?
What kind of real world speeds do you get with Sprint?

Rev a is a revision of Sprint's EVDO service. If you are going to go mobile broadband, go with either Sprint or VZW as ATT/Cingular uses a slower service called EDGE. I have Sprint EVDO service with a Sierra Wireless u595 and I average about 1.5 - 2.0 mbps download, but upload sucks and is usually around 200 - 400 kbps. I'm actually using the connection right now as i am on a road trip travelling eastbound on I-20.

I have Verizon wireless with a Sierra u595. The plan is unlimited and $59.95 a month. I am now using it on my home comp and my notebook and I am very happy with it. Speed is said to be 600-800 kbps.

Last I checked (October of last year) Verizon requires a qualifying voice plan to get the $59.99 price for their broadband service. If you just want the card, it's $79.99 a month.

Sprint gives you the $59.99 price without adding a phone on to the account in addition. I've used them for awhile and I've been pleased. Excellent service (actual coverage, not customer service, lol) and great speeds.

I've only played World Of Warcraft with the card and it's very tolerable. Not great, but okay. It's about the only thing though. Doubtful you could play any FPSes or anything like that.

do the smart thing , get a phone like the sprint mogul / htc touch an tether off of the 29.99 sprint sero plan! , so that kills 2 birds with one stone - i tether off of my PPC6700 frequently , unlimited text / net / tethering & 500 mins lol

i played counter strike source with a 220 ping off my sprint :D an it was only 2 - 3 bars of service

Unless you get the Rev. A rom for the Mogul, you'll be using Rev. 0 and not Rev. A and with tethering you have to worry about the battery of the phone.

Otherwise it's good plan. I do it everyday with one of my laptops.

I've been spoiled by my Comcast, I can't stand even 100 ms on TF2.

Haha, I have to use a Verizon EVDO Rev 0 data card as my high speed home internet connection because I live in Fallbrook so I have a choice of Dial up, Sat or cell. Sat is really expensive and pretty slow, Dial up is REALLY slow and EVDO is moderately fast and cheaper that satellite. I can play CoD4, TF2, WoW, Eve, CS:S, etc on it.. I usually get 150-220 ms latency.

the computer charges the phone for you if you just hook it up via usb :D no battery loss

Pfft, why would you tether with a cable on a wireless service. Bluetooth of WiFi fool. (More like, I have one USB port on my laptop, and BY GOD I need that for a mouse/usb drive/humping dog :D )

I don't have Verizon as my cell carrier. All I have is unlimited wireless internet and it is $59.00 a month and some taxes.

Wow, looks like Sprint is the way to go, which is really dissapointing because of the poor experience I have had with them before. When I signed up for cell service like 12 years ago, I noticed on my monthly statement I was getting a couple of free features, which I never used. I didn't think much of it because it was free, but then about 6 months down the road I looked at one of my statements again (I usually just log online and pay my bill and don't look at all the details), I noticed they were charging me 15.00 a month for those free features, and had been for the last 4 months. I guess it was only free for the first 3 months, and I if I didn't call and tell them I didn't want it, they automatically start charging me for them.

They said when I signed the contract it allowed them to do promotions like that, and they would only refund the last months 15.00, not all of the previous 4 months.

I was literally in tears in anger and frusturation because they were able to legally steal from me. It took many calls and in the end they basically said bend over because we're sticking it to you wether you like it or not.

I think the company has changed though since then and they don't practice that kind of ethically wrong behavior anymore/as much, but who am I to judge?

Take it from me. Cingular/ATT.. not sure whether it's because I've ben their customer for over 5 years or what, but I am on the regular Cell Phone MediaNET Unlimtied plan for 15 dollars a month I believe (switches form 20 to 15 and back and forth) and I download Lots, and lots... and lots of things. They never stopped my service (though I've read that peopel warn you about really acting like it's unlimited, which it is) never had any problems, and maybe over a year now I've been tethering to my laptop, pc, network.. I'm always connected to it, and no issues whatsoever. It's the best deal I've ever had, though it's not so fast (I use it with my Nokia N75 cell phone set to Edge modem speed) 3G is much faster and if you are in an area with 3G+ then that is the way to go.. With edge I get between 25-35 KB/s consistently, I play games, I download movies upon movies, games, and also do all my work online using this connection. HIGHLY recommended.. Ok people go ahead warn me about my sweet little internet setup :)

sprints unlimited IS unlimited

Just how unlimited is it? I'm assuming there must be some sort of cap on it. I'm considering sprint unlimited, but I wouldn't want my service to be cut off ubruptly just from downloading a few linux distros.

I have a few thoughts to chime in with here, all regarding Verizon.

At my last job, I had a Dell laptop with a built in Verizon EVDO Rev-A card. Speeds were great, I think I measured close to 1.5 mbps once on the Speakeasy bandwidth test. Now, at my new job, they gave me a blackberry with the pairing service. Just to note- a phone with the pairing service and unlimited data costs 59.99 per month - the same as the plan for the EVDO card.

Anyhoo, the phone can only get up to a little over 500kbps. I called Verizon to see if there was some sort of problem, but they confirmed that the pc cards are much faster than the phones, even though they are all accessing the same service.

So, thats thought #1.

As for the "unlimited" data plans- at least as far as Verizon goes, they list it right on their website that once you hit 5 gb downloaded for the month, they limit your speeds to 200 kbps. So that sucks. I don't know about the other services though.
