Dell 2408WFP Now Available

Thanks... is there a non-HC model? What are the differences? :/

Yes. There was a non-HC version called the 2407 wfp, and if I am not mistaken can no longer be brought direct from dell. As for the 2408 version looking at the specs which some would say should be taken with a grain of salt, it looks like the 2408 is a HC version. I doubt there will be a non-HC version of it.

You may want to wait till others who know more on this particular LCD chime in on it.

I almost have enough American Express reward points for a $250 Dell gift certificate. Looks like I'll be buying one if I read it's a winner.

IIRC the 250.00 Amex GC's can only be used on computers. The one for accessories (monitors) is only 50.00 :(. I always use Amex points to buy from Dell.

Anyone have any clue when this is going to be out in Canadia? And for how much? 799$ i'm guessing...?

Anyhow, been looking into getting a 24" or so with my tax return money... Just hoping my measly computer can power both my current 20" and a 24" alongside :D

The 2408WFP is available in Canada.

I have also been waiting for this monitor. Seems a few reviews are starting to pop up here and there from the US customers who received them before Canada. We all know the tech specs but want to know if any of the "issues" have been fixed. Well from what I have read from 3 sources:

2407WFP-HC Ghosting: Present on the 2408, to what degree im not sure
Input Lag: Noticable on the 2408
1:1 Pixel Mapping: No (see update below)
Backlight Bleeding: Reports suggest some noticable on dark screens
Backlight Uniformity: Unknown so far
Price: Same us US. $699 CDN

Apparently the display looks great in Windows and viewing angles are good. I don't have any input for graphics professionals so I'll post details when they become available. So I'm undecided at this point. Reports of the ghosting and lag concern me, but time will tell when more thorough reviews started showing up. TBC.

Update: I spoke with Dell support and the rep confirmed that the 2408 DOES NOT support 1:1 mapping. Grrr, I am now going to call Dell USA and see if their reps confirm this.

That is interesting E.T. I have not seem that manual before. I just finished chatting with the US dell rep and he said the same thing the CA rep said and that was no support for 1:1. Honestly i'm not sure what to beleive at this point. Still scouring the web for reviews so i'll follow up on other issues as I can find them.

Hi - I'm the one who posted a quick review of the 2408 last night. I can assure you that there is a 1:1 option(and it works) on the 2408wfp.

Have links for those 3 sources? Love to see what's been written so far or where you got the info. Thanks!

Thats great tedbird, I wasn't all that sure if the rep's at dell I was talking to actually knew what they were talking about. I look forward to your thoughts on the ghosting issues that the 2407-HC had. If your not sure what to look for when it comes to ghosting, have a look on youtube, there are several videos on there that demo the ghosting. Here are some links to a few:

Have a look at your screen and let us know if yours does that as well. Thanx

Chum, 2 of my sources are a work associate down in Maryland, and an uncle in Seattle, so I cannot link these sources. He got a unit yesterday with fast shipping. I'm not told of any results when it comes to gaming but if you have a look at my previous post I listed a few youtube videos, one of which demonstrated the mouse holding an icon ghosting. I'm told similar was seen on the 2408. I asked him to load up a game at lunch for testing, i'll let you know results. I'll track down the other and post.

By the end of the day, I should have more intel on the issues. Also watch tedbird's thread for his thoughts.

Ok I had my uncle compare his monitor to the youtube video that demonstrated the ghosting present while dragging a desktop icon (he has no games installed). From what he tells me the results is quote "not quite the same" but he felt there was at least some color shift behind the drag. Not having owned an LCD myself I have no ideas how to interpret that. I've been waiting for a month now trying to find a good LCD and now that the 2408 is out I think i'll make the 2hr drive to Seattle and see it for myself. I'll take with me my camcorder and take some vids. So hopefully by Saturday i'll have some good hands on details to report.

On a different note I had him play a standard dvd using Media Center. He said it looked good but a little washed out but that is to be expected when viewing a 720x480 movie at 1920x1200. The panel will also likely need some calibration, as I'm not sure how far factory techs from dell go into pre-sale calibration.

TBC

Teabird did a quick test after watching the youtube clip and reports no ghosting. See here:

Either way, record what you find and we''ll appreciate that. :).

I'm sorry that I created another thread for my abbreviated review. It would have been a lot more efficient if I had posted on this thread.

I did test ghosting as per the youtube video showing the problem on the 2407. I found no ghosting on the 2408, but I tested it with the monitor cold. Apparently, the ghosting shows up with the monitor warmed up for 30 minutes. I will test again with a warm 2408 asap. I will post my results in the other thread.

Also, I tested the 1:1 with my PC by setting COD4 to 1024x768 - it looked perfect with black borders along all the sides. I will be testing my cable box/dvr on hdmi with 1:1 tonight. I will post those results on the other thread.

As for users who had their monitors shipped, did you order online or by phone? I placed my order by phone and the estimated ship date is 3/5 with the estimated delivery date as 3/10.

Online here. I ordered yesterday morning and it shipped out yesterday afternoon. DHL has delivery estimated for tomorrow. :D

I'll confirm tomorrow after I get home from work.

No, because 3000:1 is the bogus er I mean dynamic contrast ratio. The real contrast ratio should be the same as the 2407WFP-HC.

That's not what the manual says, it states 1300:1 contrast (typical), which is a pretty good improvement from 1000:1.

Well, I've just ordered one here in New Zealand... hopefully be here next week!

Hei is it worth upgrading from a Dell 2405 FPW 24'' to a 2408 WFP ? How big is the improvement from mine to this new monitor ?

I am no getting a bluray internal drive anytime soon :X

I use my monitor for gaming and video viewing. Just wondering whether i should upgrade or leave as is and wait until next year. Will my current monitor be ok till then or should it be replaced now ?

I think I'll wait for some more reviews.

I'll also wait until the Dell pricing agent puts down the blunt and prices this monitor more reasonably. $700.00??? Come on, the 2407-HC's were being had for $450.00 at some point if I remember correctly....

Tedbird, thank you for the review!!

Can you tell us/test please if the image quality is different if you use VGA instead of DVI ?

Some of us may want to use it as an external monitor for laptop. (my Dell D830 has only VGA video input :( )

hey, i'm really interested in this monitor, but i have a quick question - apologies for the noobishness.

i'm currently running a geforce 6800 GT, and i'm wondering if that will give me issues with this monitor. i believe it has a dvi-i output vs. the dvi-d input of the monitor. is this a problem? do i need to upgrade my gpu to get the most out of this monitor?

thanks in advance, much appreciated.

GZ, I beleive you can get an adapter that will convert the DVI. The only think I would be concerned about is wether the 6800 has enough horsepower to run 1920x1200 smoothly. You may want to look into that further.

overspeed, thanks for the reply. i was a little concerned about the resolution issue as well, but in the short term, i'll really only use the monitor for surfing and watching tv/movies. i was optimistic the 6800 would be good for this, but i'll look into it a little more. (anyone else have any idea?). i'll likely upgrade my entire system in a few months for gaming purposes.

as far as the dvi-i to dvi-d thing, i looked around a bit and found some info suggesting that a dvi-d cable should work with the dvi-i output, providing the monitor supports it. can anyone verify this? sorry for all the queries, i'm just a little in the dark here.

I Ordered the 2408 moniter with an ebay coupon thursday so i cant wait to get it. I plan on hooking up my xbox360 to it with an hdmi cable. Does anyone know what other cable im gonna need to get audio through my speakers?

I'm looking at dells monitors page...... does anyone know why there are now 2 listings for the 2408WFP? One is listed at $699 and the other at $780?

Dell Sales told me the $780 one comes with a longer warranty. It dosen't state this anywhere on the page.

I paid $733 total with the 5 year warranty upgrade (but I did use a 10% off coupon from eBay). The $780 seems just about right, though I didn't see it on the webpage when I ordered.

Just to update, my 2408 has shipped as well and I should expect it on Tuesday or so! I guess Dell is shipping these monitors faster than their 1-2 week wait.
