OK so I've put together a component list and am now considering what RAM to get. The 8400 will go on a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R rev.2.1 board. According to Gigabyte's memory compatibility list for this board, Corsair memory appears to be the best choice, at least in terms of what Gigabyte has tested on the board.

Has anyone tried any G.Skill on this board? For instance this:

No G.Skill is on Gigabyte's compatibility list for this board, but I'm told a lot of G.skill is very compatible in general. Whatever brand, should I get DDR2 1000 or 1066? Take a chance with the G.Skill? TIA...

Brand doesn't matter, at all, and it should /all/ be compatible. You're looking for DDR2-1000, or if you can get 1066 for less (doubtful) go that route. I know quite a few people here are running G.Skill in DS3Rs. They're older revisions, but it'll be fine.

The compatibility lists are useless.

That kit runs fine in my -DS4, can't imagine why the DS3R would be any different.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Ummm...Newegg has two kits, both 2x1gb G.Skill, one DDR2-1000 and one DDR2-1066 for exactly the same price. What's up with that?

All the specs are the same (voltage, timings, CAS). There's another 2x1GB kit of the G.Skill that is 2.3V - 2.4V on the voltage (more expensive)...I assume that's preferable for the purposes of overclocking?

Actually, lower voltage is better assuming you get the same timings and such. Pick up the 2GB DDR2-1066 kit. The DDR2-1000 kit would be fine, but for the same price, no reason not to get the higher rated sticks.

I'd look around outside of Newegg before you buy, of course.

Not to mention that kit also has free shipping, while the other doesn't. :D

Can you recommend any other vendors for memory?

OCZ, GeIL, G.Skill, Corsair, Crucial, PQI, TEAM Group, A-Data, Patriot (bad about rebates), Mushkin, Kingston.

Any of those are good. You're looking for CAS5 or lower (5-5-5-15 or better/lower), but don't pay a big premium for CAS4, as the performance difference is almost zero.

Oops sorry...I meant resellers. I've heard good things about ClubIT for instance.
