I have the cd key that came with it. Infact I have everything that came in the plastic box, other than the first CD. Is there anything I can do about it?

contact the publishers and see if they do replacement CD's, some do, but they charge $10 or something like that.

Some people told me it is perfectly legal to download this cd on the net. I'm not a lawyer so I can't tell if it's true or not.

i wouldn't call it "perfectly legal".
it's shady, and you should have to pay for your mistakes.
isn't Q4 in the bargain bin now?

Technically if you own the game, you're allowed at least to make a backup copy. How you come to create that backup copy is not really detailed.

I'd just grab an ISO.

Also note if you have the game installed somewhere, it'll still run regardless with the key listed in a file there in the directory online and offline without the CD. I've had the same install of Q4 on a game drive over 3 different OS installs and haven't busted out the box since I got the game.

Ok, with that being said...Is a Quake 4 cd and a Quake 4 dvd serial interchangeable?

I think yes.

That being said, I have not installed Q3A in ages...still using the same folder from like, 3 years ago, I just move that drive from machine to machine as I go.

I bought quake 4 (CD edition) as well, and I must say the jewel case the CDs came in was very poorly designed. The two sides flip open and spill the cds onto the floor everytime you so much as look at the damn thing.

The only mistake I see is one made by the industrial designer.

I was under the impression that we as consumers are buying a license (cd key) to operate the game, so downloading an image is just fine.

Precisely. You buy a license to use the software, not own it. Downloading the CDs to enable you to use your license is completely legal.

The only mistake I made was buying Q4 in the first place. I've tried to get into the game a few times now and just do not care for it much at all. Doom3 I liked even less. And I'm someone who liked the early Doom and Quake games. They just don't have the same emotional kick that the old versions had.

Last time I played Q4 it was completely dead online. If you're d/ling for online play, I wouldn't even bother.

I bought the CD version and install from the DVD ISO I got off the net. keys are interchangeable. I couldn't find any DVD copies at the time, so I had to get the CD version. But installing off 4 CDs sucks.
