My poor girlfriend had a D50 that she absolutely loved(maybe more than me) and it was unfortunately stolen from her car this weekend with her lenses. Sooooo, i am going to buy her a new one but i really know practically nothing about cameras.

There is a D40 but i have heard it has been stripped down from the 50, and she complained about it once. Open to suggestions in the 750 dollar range.

**cliffs, need D50 replacement, DSLR boy+lense for 750-900 bones.

actually read the thread below this which was quite informative, i think i might go with the canon XT and buy her a lense as well...

Uh, I'd be cautious about switching systems if she's not expecting it. Unless she knows you're buying her a Canon and is okay with it, I'd stick with Nikon if she's used to the Nikon interface and was heavily invested in the system.

Try a used D70?

I sounds like you are starting over from scratch, a good canon setup if you plan to go that route is a Canon XTi and a Tamron 17-55 2.8....

And with the introduction of the 450D/XSi the XTi pricing will be starting to drop soon. They are planning on completely phasing out the XT in replacement of the XTi so we should see the prices start dropping as soon as the XSi hits the streets. I am still in a toss up between the XTi and the XSi.... price being the main concern. However, if you girl still has all her SD cards laying around then it may be better to stick with the Nikon (or go more expensive with the XSi which is Canon's foray into the SD memory market)

or the new D60 with dlighting and a few additional features.

or you can do the right thing and get her a real camera, a Canon :)
*dons flame suit +6 and runs*

Do not get ther the D60 it is another D40. I would go with the D80 myself. You can get her one for the price you stated. And unless she will accept one I wouldnt even think of getting her a Canon. You never change a photographers gear choice unless they initate it. That is just asking for trouble.

Another D50 can be had for that, plus a couple of lenses. If she had big time lenses, you are out of luck on that front.

Have her get insurance for the equipment.

Used D80 kit would be my call... a very nice upgrade. If you look really hard, you might find a used D200 (with a basic lens) within this price range as well.

Wow I'd get another D200 if I saw it at this price range. I'd be skeptical of that. Sounds like your best bet is the D80, and to reiterate what the other fine users have said never swap a photographers gear. You silly Canon people :)

Look around then... Since the D300 came out, the used D200 prices are hovering around $800 to $950, some with extras even.

I just looks very quickly, note the asking prices. Going even lower on ebay. ;)
Example of a great package price:

Very intriguing. Looks like it might be time to get a backup body!

To sum it up:

Nikon: If you want to make her happy, then buy a D50; if you want to surprise her, then a NIB D80 body can be had with that price. A used D200 can be found with that price as well.

Canon: Consult with your GF first.

Lens: Let her buy her own lens. Basic non-zooming lens start at around $120 and prices skyrockets from there. Kit lens are usually between $150-350 depending on the model.

she's very poor, she cannot afford lenses so i will have to buy one of those as well.

Probably gonna go with rebel XT and decent lense, especially if price is gonna go down, i'm sure she will be thrilled with it. Sux people have to steal cameras, especially from somebody who loves it and it quantifies as their only real possesion over 300 dollars. I guess if theives gave it any though, they probably wouldn't be stealing stuff to begin with.

Make sure to check you local craigslist to see if it happens to pop up on there, a lot of times shit does if you do not have pawn shops in your area...

Also, what lenses did she have from before? You can probably get an XT body for about $400 and then pick her up a nice walk around lense for another couple hundred... If you plan only getting her the body and one lense then I would up it to the XTi model and a decent walk around lense... The XTi is more comparable to the D40x/D50...

I'm sure she'll appreciate any gift, but you should really check with her first before you buy a Canon. It's like if someone stole your Xbox and a friend got you a a PS3 to replace it; they're both video game systems, but very different. Similarly, Nikon and Canon cameras can both take great pictures, but they're pretty different in the way that they operate and handle.

If you can spend up to $900, here's a D80 kit for $880:

Agreed... And that's a really nice upgrade!!!

You *really* need to check with her first before changing her system. The PS3/Xbox analogy was pretty good above. Think Ford vs Toyota if that didn't do it for you.

As long as you're calling Canon the Ford, I'm okay with that. :p

If you buy another Nikon, I'll sell you my barely used 55-200mm VR for $200. I have only shot with it once. Work + school + GF pretty much takes all my time.
