asus eee

I have a 2gb stick of RAM (which I'll actually put in the DV9000, and move the 1gb to the EEE), a 16gb SDHC card, and the EEE 4G Galaxy in my cart. I have more than enough money to buy it...but something's holding me back.

Can anyone suggest something to push me over the edge and make me click the buy now button?

Lol. I am following the same path as you. Using the 1GB stick from my laptop for the Eee PC and getting a 16GB SDHC card. Though, I'm going to get the White Polar color.. :p

As for what's missing... an optical drive. I know it's possible to install XP via USB drive but I also want to install other things such as UT2004 or Microsoft Office.

I can easily get a 5.25" external bay for $22 @ Newegg. :)

Pearl White's where it's @ :D

OMG sexy! Just ordered my @ Zipzoomfly for $396 shipped. :)

A lot of good things are coming next week for me.. Yum!

You can just drag and drop office to a thumb drive from CD and install it, thats the way its always been and I just got a chance to confirm that it works with 2007. And I just posted link that showed how to install Windows XP off a thumb drive, which I have not yet confirmed on the EEE, but did confirm on a test machine I have sitting around. As for UT, you have me at a lose, I'm personally going for Quake 2 (drag and drop directory).

got my black 4g last night and absolutely love it so far. The engineering on this thing is pretty good. Seems like everything was thought of. Love the neoprene case it comes with and the super small power supply. haven't installed my 2g ram yet which i think will smooth a lot of things out when playing music i was getting some stuttering when doing other things. I was quite surprised on how good the speakers are on this thing. Installing xp today and cant wait to get some setup on this thing.

I just got my EEE! This things great, I almost don't want to put XP on it (almost). The RAM, SDHC Card and Bluetooth won't be here till Monday/Tuesday, doesn't mean I can't play with it now.

Amazing, I paid for the cheapest shipping from ZipZoomFly (5-7 business days) and I'm getting it this Tuesday.

Only problem. I'm not getting home until after 7.25PM... D'oh!

i had ordered mine from costco and i paid 10 for shipping and got mine all the way from California in 3 days

The 4G doesnt have soldered SD card? wiki says it does. I want to replace it with a bigger one, but want to make sure I can.

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/eee_pc_701#models

Only the 8g has a removable ssd.
With that said, buy a 16GB SDHC card and use that for extra storage.
You can use nlite and shrink xp to a good size and install most of your programs and shit to the sd card.
Mine is a 4g running xp, using an adata 8gb sdhc card and upgraded the memory to a 2 GB stick of gskill ddr2.
Everything works good and I still have 1.8 GB left on my ssd. No swap file.

heh heh heh, 241MB Free :D

Anyways, I ordered a 8GB SDHC (here on Monday) which should allow me to move some of the stuff off the 4GB SSD. I installed Windows XP SP3, followed some of the instructions from the manual and installed a bunch of crap (VLC, Winamp, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, CCleaner, WinDefender, AVG, OpenOffice.org, PhoneTools, IE7 (MS killed IE6 with the last patch), Messenger, Motorola Phone Tools and Firefox 2). A couple of the programs I'm gonna remove later (Motorola Phone Tools comes to mind) which I only installed because of drivers that I finally figured out where it put them after I installed it (setup my cellphone modem).

Ugh. I thought you could replace the 4gig card, with a 8/16gig card internally. Ive got a copy of XP with SP3, but have no idea how to use nlite to shrink it. I guess I may be looking into it.

Or Ill just keep the stock OS. All I want it to do, is to browse the web, get email, play some mp3's, and watch some TV shows that are in xvid/divx format. Only the last one am I worried about. Does it work with all the same codecs? I want a ultra portable laptop to take with me to Iraq this May, and thats all Im interested in it doing. So if it does that fine, I wont even bother with XP.

How big is SP3? Ugh... Bloatware or necessary?

Almost hooked on getting this...

I wouldnt worry about not having enough space because you can always add an sdhc card and install programs to it. People have said they notice no difference in speed when using programs of the card.

I'm really thinking of getting one of these, but I would like to see one in person first. I sold my old 4+ year old 14" notebook and bought a Dell M1330 just before Christmas, but sent it back. It was more notebook than I needed, plus 13.3" was still too big. I'm notebookless for now, and I'm still waiting for Dell to refund my money.

I really just need something small and light to take on overnight/weekend trips to check email, but on longer trips I used my notebook to dump pics from my digital cameras. That's the only downside to the Eee, but I do have a 120GB WD Passport, so I'll just have to bring that along. I hope the Eee is for MEee. :D

I've heard about the new models planned, but since there's no set release date, I'm going to go ahead and get the 4G now (well when I get my refund from Dell) and either sell it when the new ones come out or give it to my mom. I may even just buy her a 2G Surf, I'm tired of relatives emailing me wanting me to print it out and take it to her.

I don't have any Costco's near me, but do they carry them in stores? I'll going to Atlanta, GA this weekend where they have several along the way and near where I'll be staying. I'd like to check one out if they have them in the store.

If/when I get one, I don't know if I'll stick to the default OS, install another Linux distro like eeeXubuntu, or install WindowsXP. There are a few things that I may need XP for. I have a WinMCE machine as a DVR, and I would copy recorded shows to my old notebook when I went on long trips. I had Ubuntu installed with dual boot on my old notebook, and I never could get the dvr-ms files to play on Linux.

I did read that ASUS is bringing a model of the 4G with XP pre-installed in Feb. I wonder if it will be cheaper to buy that or get it now with an OEM XP.

I dont think the Atlanta costco's will have them but you can try. I dont remember seeing one there when i went. You have to be a member to get in the place anyways so unless you are a member dont count on getting through the door. If you buy it from online you have to pay 5% if you arent a member but you also have the ability to take it back after 90 days.

I would definitely install xp on it as it just makes everything easier. The other OS are nice but just arent as easy to use when it comes to being compatible when on the go IMO

Costco, 90 day return policy and +2 years on the manufacturers warranty, which considering that the EEE PC only has a 6 month warranty is a huge plus. I got it about 2 days after I ordered.

I finally got my 2GB of RAM and 8GB SDHC, every thing is running great!

I need to find an app for battery life since Windows XP one doesn't work. There is Battery Monitor.NET, but it has a huge memory leak which the creator has already said he won't fix.

P.S. Works great with a Slingbox!

EDIT On the Costco website it says the EEE has a full 2 year Warranty, I thought it was only 6 months?

I've been doing some research online and haven't found a definitive answer.

If you install Windows XP on the Eee does it support the native resolution of 800 x 480, or do you have to scroll in order to see everything?

Warranty=2 years

Read thru the thread and you'll most likely find an answer for battery life.

I believe with the latest Intel driver, you can. Or, what I've been hearing that you can get a higher resolution using a special 'monitor resolution changer app'. I remember reading about it on that eeeuser website.

Truthfully, I don't know. But I will have an answer tomorrow, when I get my Eee PC via FedEx. :)

Surf's warranty is only 1yr (which I have)

So I'll wait a bit longer before I void the warranty :D

Haha, not really sure if I'd want touchscreen, I would like the screen to go to the edges + higher resolution... no need for speakers :)

800x480 is the only resolution you get unless you use a little ASUS app that sits in the systray allowing you to change to 800x600. It doesn't fill the screen though but does that thing where you move the screen to the top and it pans up, move it down and it pans down, etc. There is a hacked driver that allows more supposedly, but I've never used it.

Well, I cheated and added a CF-based faux-SSD to my laptop. Not quite as portable an Eee PC, and it took a whole day of hammering out configs for a bare Ubuntu + XFCE instead of Xubuntu, but it's probably as fast as an Eee.

Oh, who am I kidding...the Eee is so much cooler.

Woot! Got my Eee today!

Played with Linux for about 10min, got bored/frustrated, switched to XP. lol.

I think I booted into linux, played the penguin game for about 10 seconds then turned it off and plugged in my USB DVD drive and installed windows, I had already nlited a copy of XP before it arrived so I just had to change a few bios settings, delete all the partitions and go from there :D

Lol.

Know what's ya mean. I had a little difficulty with my wifi and linux.

All in all, I just bought a 16GB SDHC card, a 5.25" external enclosure, and 2GB DDR2 memory. Should hopefully help this sexy beast of mine. :)

Just got mine, SN starting with 810, galaxy black, no PCIe. Posting from the small thing. Coming from a 24" to this, [H] forum really seems so small. So what's next should I do? Install WinXP or Ubuntu?

id stick with xp on the eee. I switched and its much easier. Ive got office 2003 and use it to do stuff for work with access.

I'm going to thread crap here a little. I love the EEE PC. I actually had to go to Microcenter last weekend just so i could mess around with it a little bit. But honestly could not get myself sold on it. This is only the first of its kind. There are going to be a huge string of these devices, small, functional, and cheap. I'm already pretty sold on the Cloudbook. Although 4gig of memory can prove for some fun challenges, 30gigs can get a little more interesting. Even more so, by summer they are going to have some mini-laptops running on some more potentially powerful Intel chips. I’m going to hold out from the siren of EEE PC, and see what around the corner. With competition, prices drop, products increase in quality. Asus is just dominating and enjoying the first to market advantage.

Terrible VIA chipset, slow 30 gig drive, touchpad + buttons above the keyboard  Meh. I stuck a 16gb SDHC card in mine (making it 20 gigs of solid storage)...for $60.. 2gb of ram for $25

Once you format an SSD, you'll never go back to rotary drives. :D

Oh, and the boot times are pretty insane as well.

After reading all the positive feedback I've decided to pick up an Eee this weekend. Since I just finished building my Core2Quad rig, I sold my 17" Sager as I don't need 2 power machines.

Got 2GB of G.Skill and a 16GB SDHC card coming from newegg already. I also already nlited a Windows XP install, just need to pick up a flash drive from work tomorrow.

Has anyone had any luck getting OpenBSD or FreeBSD working on these? I heard there were some issues with Wifi.

Here is a major tip when installing Windows XP on an EEE. I can not stress enough of how much trouble later on you can avoid by turning OS Installation on in the BIOS before installing XP and then after your 100% done turning it off. I forgot this second time installing XP and it gave me major headaches until I realized I forgot it. I can fix this by scheduling a Chkdsk with repair and recover, rebooting into bios, turning on OS Install, letting the chkdsk run through, it will detect a new USB Composite Device, let it do its thing, rebooting and turning OS Installation off or finished.

I had to reinstall Windows because I accidentally took out some critical windows files while trimming it down after a pagefile mishap, long story.

Hehe, I just left OS install to "finished" I believe it's only meant for the Xandros install...

I've been playing the "I'll wait till something better comes along" game for almost a year now. It's true, something better will always be coming out "just around the corner," but you eventually have to stop waiting and buy something or you will be waiting forever. If you don't need something now, no one is forcing you to buy one, but if your in my situation, I can't wait any longer.

I was glad to see the Cloudbook announced, but a little dissapointed that it didn't make it's Jan 25 release date. After reading pre-views and comparisons of the two, I still like the EeePC better, but I was hoping ASUS might drop their prices when the Cloudbook came out.

ASUS has announced the new 8, 8.9 and 10 inch models coming out later this year, I would like to wait for one of those, but I need a notebook now. I bought a Dell M1330 in December, and sold my old 14" notebrick. The M1330 had the dreaded high pitch whine, and after going through two of them I just sent it back for a refund. I'm still waiting for the refund, but as soon as I get it I'm going to pick up an EeePC 4G, or by the time they get around to refunding my money the 8G might be available again.

There will always be something smaller and better later on down the road. Whether your willing to go without the pc now until those come out is another question. then the eee will drop in price and you will consider it again cause its cheaper than the new ones. Etc etc the cycle will continue.
