Everywhere I look, I see the price of the iPhone with the caveat of "must come with 2 year contract".

I want to get one, but should said phone kick the bucket before said 2 year contract is up, can I purchase a replacement for $399 as well, or will the price go WAY up because I don't necessarily want to add another contract?

Apple's warranty is 1 year. AT&T, who usually offers insurance plans on phones, doesn't offer any plan on it. I think if you are worried about it kicking the bucket, maybe see if an AppleCare plan is available for the phone.

applecare is available for it, it's $69 and essentially adds another year of warranty coverage so your phone would be covered for the whole 2 year period.

and IIRC, out of warranty iphone replacement phones cost $199 for the 4gb and $249 for the 8gb...and you have to have an active at&t account to buy those.

ATT does NOT have insurance on the iphone though

dont think they will offer it either.

Applecare is for one year on the phone, included in original price of the phone, and can add another year for a price. I recently had my phone crap out, reloads whenever I attempted to charge it, it would not get service, I went in and got a brand new phone with no questions.

that's exactly what I needed to know :) Thanks all!

The price has nothing to do with the 2 year agreement they are just letting you know that you cant use the device until you activate with at&t unless you hack it that is;) But yea the price will always be 399 till they drop it. You just walk in to apple and ask for an iphone att doesnt have to be involved at all.
