Dell Laptops 50% off

I use a D820 for work....got it about 2 years ago....it's been a very good lappie....

However I use it primarily in a docking station....

How in the world are any of these laptops a substantially better deal than this walk in, no rebate Toshiba at Best Buy? I bought one of these last week, and it's a heck of a nice laptop for $449. I even upgraded the memory to 2GBs cheap.

The Dell's have full-blown Core 2 Duo processors instead of Pentium Dual-cores, have dedicated gfx chips, Windows XP, and also are just generally built better.

I've bought laser printers, laptops, monitors all from the business section before. Only used the home section once to buy a Dimension 2400 way back.

It basically just means that illegal idiots can't buy from Dell small business. If you're a legal idiot, a citizen, or even an illegal alien, you should have no trouble purchasing through dell small business.

What the fuck are you talking about?

I think it's for those people that want to take advantage of dell's small business credit. You DO need information about having a small business, but to actually purchase something, all you need is a credit card and/or a paypal account.

For me, and since I had the money, I paid with a credit card, and it's like any other online transaction. If you want to make those $15/month payments however, you need to apply for dell's credit services and that's when you need the business ID (or SSN for a sol-prop).

Hmmm... interesting about the dedicated gfx chips, as it appears that only one of the three has a dedicated graffics chip (the D820). The others use the same onboard video as the Toshiba, the IBM X3100.

Yes, these are Core2 Duos.... but the Toshiba came with a DL DVD+-R/W, 120GB HDD, and the 15.4" screen. I've had a Dell. I've had an IBM. I've had a Sony. I've had a Gateway. And I've had Compaqs. The Toshiba feels a bit flimsier than all but the Vaio (VERY early, 12" Vaio ultralight), yes... because it's the lightest I've ever had other than the Vaio. The Compaqs were both DTRs. The IBM was a rugged piece of work (I'll grant super high quality on that!) The Gateway always felt like it was going to fall apart, but took abuse and never did. The Dell just feels... I don't know... blah? Maybe because it's a work laptop.

The Core 2 Duo was a big thing to me; I really did want one. But at the price difference, for the features, I can't see that these Dells are a bargain compared to the Toshiba. Now, if the Dells had a DL +-DVDRW, had the 15.4" and the 120GB 5400RPM drive, maybe. As someone who's been using XP a LONG time, Vista Home Premium is a bit different, but not to the point that I'd get rid of it YET (hasn't annoyed me that much) especially with Vista SP1 coming RSN; I'm still making up my mind on it. But I've got at least three unused licenses for XP Pro I could slap on this puppy if it came to that at this point. And I have to say that this was the easiest laptop I've ever had to get connected to my wireless at home.

You'll be lucky if that toshiba lasts 1/4 as long as any of the Dell's listed here. Better viewing angles on these screens too (I've used the toshiba 15.4). Core2 is two processor generations past the Pentium-D, plus is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the 1.6ghz Pentium-D. Probably by at least 50%, IIRC. DVD+-RW is a cheap option to add to one of the Dells. Plus, they get FAR better battery life (I'm averaging 4 hours almost on my D630), better warranty, better support, better service, and they don't die every 6 months like every toshiba I've had since the mid 2003's has.

To give you an idea: One can get that laptop at black friday for around $200, every year, give or take a few minor features. It's a cheap laptop, based around 3 year old hardware, with a few decent modern amenities thrown in.

The wireless was Vista- not toshiba, btw.

starting to wish I had not ordered that thinkpad last month....Still waiting for it to be delivered too...

Anybody have the battery life on either the D620 or D820? Real battery life too, not the crap review sites give out.

I have a D600 which gets about 1:50 minutes of class time use. Its balls.

depends- the D620 have a bad battery that likes to die after a year. Assuming they fixed that, you get 3 hours on the standard one. .

no complaints, its holding up well. On the other hand, I had a loaner D620 until my D630 was delivered, and it was pretty unstable. Not sure on the specs tho, I think the apps I was running really taxed it. For basic lappy functions, they re probably fine.

The D620s had some overheating problems. Dell pulled the Quadro cards from them due to this, and after enthusiasts backlashed, they started offering Quadros again, against their better judgment. The D630s don't have this problem.

My 820's 9-cell battery gets around 3 or 3.5 hours, but the battery is wearing out. I could get 4 hours when it was new.

fyi: you cannot buy latitudes (or anything from business categories) unless you have a business tax id.

Jesus... everyone's flaming me. Folks, you cannot buy from Dell Business unless dell thinks you're a business. I'm sure there's ways around it, but in my experience the average joe consumer is prevented from purchasing.

I was a contractor for several years, and tried a number of times to buy equipment from dell for my "business use" but was denied because being 1099 and schedule C is not enough. I don't recall exactly if it was the tax id or the business license # or whatever.

So far, everyone I know that has a dell business machine for personal use got it through work, employee purchase, or actually run their own business (formally; pay seperate taxes on it, etc). If you're none of these things and still bought one direct from dell, tell us how.

I buy them all the time as an individual. Either you did this years ago, or you just can't push the buttons right :p

I've bought tons through the Dell Outlet, or just going like a totally normal purchase. Put in a business name (pick one at random) when it asks, and hit checkout. keke, done!

I am not a business. I just bought (and then canceled) a d630.

Hello, can you read? Lots of people have done it. Numerous people have said in this thread that they have done exactly what you said they could not.

Do you really think that all the people with latitude laptops got them from a business? They didn't. i didn't. Sorry dude, you are wrong. I don't know if this was the case at some point in the past, but it ABSOLUTELY ISN'T TRUE now, and hasn't been for a while.

I was debating buying the ATG model but now it looks like the deal is gone. I hate it when I snooze on a deal and miss out. BTW, I have purchased many items from Dell Business with no problems. If your name is Eric Kartman, your business is called Eric Kartman & Co.

Ive bought all my stuff through Dell on the Small Business side and I dont have a business. When they asked for a business name, I used "Umbrella Corp". Now all the stuff they ship me says "Umbrella Corp" on the package :p

Ive been ordering like this for the better part of 2 years now.

In for a 620. My mother in-law (cringe) is running an Athlon based system I built for her over 5 years ago. This will bring her up to speed I think.

Just PU'd another D820 for my work....

I couldn't order through my corporate account (different division), so I just checked-out as guest and put in my corporate card...no problems.

The Latitude D620 increased by $20 in price and the Latitude D820 are back at full price ($1,357)!!

Deal loosing value.

Sorry dude, you are wrong
...

Well, maybe you can. I haven't tried in a while, but since then I see what goes on in corporate purchasing and the latitude/business sales is handled differently at dell.

As far as your foaming-at-the-mouth diatribe goes, lighten up. You're going to make people think you have a small toolkit, t-man.

I dont have a small business and even got a business preferred account(although i had to call). Just used my ssn as tax id and made up a business name

The rep said the 820 was wrong and doesnt have the 512 card in it, it has a 256 card I guess. He said the 512 card was 300$ buy himself. Although I did get a similiar Vostro with 2gig of and a 256 8600M for 699 so it was all good.

And you sound ignorant because you continued to stick to your guns in the face of many many people coming forward to tell you differently.

Dell corporate is different from dell small business. Maybe this is where we are getting confused.

I saw this deal on SD and told a friend of mine about it. He wants an ultra portable, so I told him about the D420 for $700 and he bought it + extra $20 for the bigger battery + extra $39 for 2-day shipping.
