VR Head Tracking With The Wii Remote

I am an avid pc gamer and have only played on a Wii a few times. I have to admit though, if they could implement technology like this even into the existing games like Resident Evil or even Wii Sports, it would add a whole new dimension to gaming, much less console gaming. Now only if this guy making it look so easy didn't make me want it so much quicker I wouldn't be here contemplating buying a Wii!

Woah! Very cool.

This does make me ask this question: how are they going to get this technology to work on a Wii without having to use a PC?

This is really old news, no? I thought I read about it here a month or so ago... anyways, yeah it's alright, I imagine most fps might be stupid but maybe a boxing game or something like that... a 3d where's waldo is probably what will happen though

On the wii, yes. But, what about future products? Don't be so short sighted about things.

i just don't see it as anything new, but it's cool he figured it out how to mock it up on a wii...

guess i'm just not that impressed yet, i wanna see a real (fun) game use this technology.

It would work on the Wii just as it does the PC. You can't program a Wii game in your spare time like you can a PC game. Thus he used a pc instead of a Wii. All he is doing is using the controler movement to move the viewing frame. It isn't anything that special in regards to the technology. Just a completley different way to use it than it is currently being used.

trackir has been doing this for a while now..

infact check out some of the videos with armed assault using the tracki..

i think the only difference between the wiimote and the track-ir is that the wii-mote is the sensor and the bar is the IR source where trackir is the other way around.

psshhhh
This is childs play. I can do this in my sleep...

Except I don't wanna
J/k

I really hope Nintendo comes out with something like this soon, Wii games are fun in a simple way but with this, WOW.

I see high definition wall projector sales skyrocketing. Imagine wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling virtual reality projection like this ;)

Agree TrackIR have been doing this for a while now. Which it also supports pitch & roll head movments. Its just down right awsome in flight sims.

The point isn't, "Has it been done before?" It has. The point is that every has missed out on how cheap and easy it is now. This technology is the ANSWER to 3D gaming in the short to mid term. I want this on my 3d games right now. Take that same set of safety glasses and remove the lenses and it's nearly perfect.

It's an awesome idea. I want this.

In fact, imagine using this system combined with the web cam facial tracking from that story a few weeks ago. You could have an MMO where your facial expression and lips are synced to what you are saying in the game, AND the IR system this guy made would be able to track your head and use your TV as a 3d portal.

What could be cooler? This could be done right now for less than $100 in hardware!

BRING IT ON!

you guys are slower than honda-tech when it comes to news like this welcome to 2007...........

The news is rather old, but nevertheless certainly the future of FPS games imo. The use of a device that essentially does the same thing as the Wiimote/Sensor Bar (I'm sure there are better things that people can slap on their heads than the Wii Sensor Bar) plus a lightgun would be instant win for all kinds of shooters (including FPS's- death of the mouse =(

this is great....

the VR images are cool, but as a teacher (one that does not have a thousand dollar Smartboard) I will definitely be recreating his version... and his is better anyways because you are not limited to projecting on the board but can project on any medium.......

definately a smart guy,

PS i just got a wii remote for $22 shipped on ebay, now time to make me some IR pens and i am done...

thousand dollar product for less than $100

I WIN!

It is not as accurate or versatile and costs more than twice that of the WiiMote solution at best (you don't need to buy an entire Wii, just the $50 WiiMote and some infrared LEDs).

It also doesn't move your POV, TrackIR simply acts like the right analog stick of a 360 or PS3 in an FPS with additional pitch/roll functionality. Watch the video, it's not the same.

You guys should also check out his WiiMote Whiteboard. Whiteboards costs thousands of dollars, his costs only a Wiimote, an infrared LED, and whatever projector you want, and it can be used on whatever surface you please (within reason; it probably wouldn't be a good idea to use it on a glass table).

For some reason, the thread title reminds me of the Wii parody where they are so lazy, they put the controller in a helmet and play the games that way. :p

Hey! How did he hand-hold a camera and move it around with the wii bar and be able to talk, but get no clunking or scratching sounds from the camera??!

Clearly the video is fake.

I noticed the shadows were off too.

WTF are you talking about?

hahahaha

What I like the most is that it is very fluent, and that makes it appear to be very realistic. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

TrackIR 4 does adjust your POV, as a matter of fact. FSX is one of many games that support TrackIR4's 6 degrees of freedom, where you can rotate or slide your view laterally along all three axes. You can shift your view to the left or right, look up over the console of your Cessna or lean forward to get a closer look at the guages.

Armed Assault and Insurgency MOD for Half-Life 2 are two games that utilize the 6 DOF for FPS movement, including leaning around corners, looking around while your weapon is still up in the 'firing' position, etc.

yea trackir is everythin the wii mote is (and more)

armed assault,IL2, and falcon 4.0 are the 3 reasons i got a trackir4 unit..

you can see some demos here

what is really unique about the armed assault use of trackir is your "head" is actually independent of your gun (similar to the flight sims)..

where you look isn't where you aim..

you lean forward to look down the sites a little better etc.. etc..

which nintendo really hasn't even implimented anything like this (i was really hoping for them to do this with cabela's hunting game, wow disappointed there).
