Is there a way I can copy a .zip file from my SATA HD to my USB hard drive even though I havnt got windows installed?

There must be some kind of bootable program which can copy and paste files between hard drives with usb support...

I tried doing it in DOS but it doesn't recognise my USB hard drive...

Thanks

Well possibly the hard way would be to boot to a usb device like a flash drive that was loaded with some sort of basic linux build. That version includes a lot of "if's" though and is not guaranteed to work.

A Bart's PE disc would essentially do the same thing and would be much easier provided that you have a working computer to burn it with.

Alternatively you could just go pickup a sata hard drive enclosure and transfer the file that way using another desktop or laptop.

If you can burn CDs, a Ubuntu live CD should be able to recognize the USB drives. You might have problems if the drives are formatted NTFS, but as long as you properly unmounted the drives before shutting down, it should work.

The Ultimate Boot CD (free download) has file management tools galore, but I don't know if the environment it creates will recognize USB ports or not. Worth a try....
