I've got something like 25 days left to step up if I want to - my eVGA 680i SLI has been performing fine for me, but my question is - is it worth paying 90 USD to get a 780i in its place (aside from the obvious lack of a computer during the time when I don't have my mobo...)?

Main reason I see for a 780i is PCIe 2.0 - does my current 680i offer Penryn/Yorkfield compatability, or would I need a 780i for that?

Thanks,
RA

i believe EVGA stated that the 680i will not support the new 1333FSB Quads, but it will support the 1333FSB Dual Cores with a BIOS update.

i personally am spending the $90 to upgrade my 680i, and right on time. two or three days before i went to pack it all up to get ready to send away, i got a BSOD and it killed my RAM.

Personally I don't think it is worth it for me. I'll get upgrade the e8400 for my 680i, and the next time I upgrade I'll probably be switching to a new MB. I don't really see a need for a quadcore yet.

Could not overclock much with my Q6600 and 680i, than got the 780i and I now can o/s much higher on air.

Later will upgrade to the QX9550 Penryn and wait until next year for the next big release, so I'm glade I did upgrade.

I believe that i read that the 680i will NOT support any 45nm cpu :( that is the whole reason they released the 780i (other than to charge a premium price) is for the wolfdale, penryn and yorkfield cpus

The 680i will support dualcore 45nm with a bios update. But no hope for quads.

I keep hearing about people not being to OC quads well on the 680i, other than the fact that the board is flakey as hell, i run my q6600 at 3.6ghz 24/7 and havent had any issues (other than the memory controller taking a shit). I'm still on the fence with the upgrade. Considering i paid 200 for my 680i, having to pay another 90 + the cost of shipping it back, it seems like i'd be better off just selling the board and buying a new one. Although if the 780i's do turn out to be worthwhile boards i might rethink my position.

Augh, I was out of state for a while...

If I were to upgrade to a 780i, what does that afford me - just 45nm Quads - what about Nehalem? If I'm not planning an upgrade for the next few months, am I better to just stick it out with my 680i? I'd love to get a new quad...but not sure when that may happen (June/July?)

Perhaps the worst thing for me is sending it back, waiting for them to ship the 780i...the whole time being with no computer. Is it even worth it in the end?

I believe that Nehalem is a completely new architecture that requires a new socket. If I remember, Nehalem chips are supposed to be using an integrated memory controller like AMD has. Also Nehalem is supposedly going to be DDR3 only when the new socket hits.

UGH.. times ticking and im still on the fence with this upgrade.... I have other computers so im not really worried about being down but i just want to make sure im making the right decision before throwing $90 away on a new mobo that isnt any real upgrade or has any advantages over my existing board. I dont plan on upgrading for a while personally accept for this... i feel my ram is good, proc is good... why bother ;)
I might down the road when i get cash upgrade the video cards but thats about it. I feel im pretty set with my qx6700 for a while atleast.

So yeah bottom line ... whats everyone verdict?

TO UPGRADE

or

NOT TO UPGRADE?

hahah i thought this was my post since i have one EXACTLY LIKE IT ;)
