asus eee

I don't know if I can wait a few months more for the new revisions. I can carry this on the subway going and coming back from work. I don't know if a 13.3" Lappy would feel as comfy toting around. Now the only thing holding me back is the fact that the 4G solid state is solderd on and I'd like at least to have the ability to change it. If it is possible. I may just buy it! IS it really soldered on as it says so going by the info on this page? http://wiki.eeeuser.com/eee_pc_701#models

I may just do the 4g Surf and add a 8GB SDHC and 1Gb of mem.
BTW can anyone confirm if the new 2G Surfs have the memory soldered on as well...

I did a ton or research on these before I bought mine, but I didn't pay much attention to the surft talk since I was more interested in the non-surf ones. But it seemed to me that maybe a lot of people mistook having no panel on the bottom for the RAM not being upgradeable, when in fact you just have to take the EEEPC apart to upgrade the RAM. I'll poke around and see if that's the case.

EDIT: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=4384

I'm incredibly tempted to order a 4GB

2GB of ram and 16GB SDHC card for $102 (after rebate :p)

means for $500, 2GB of ram, 20GB of storage...... people are claiming after BIOS update it's easy to clock it back to 900mhz unfortunately it does run pretty hot 50c-60c... some people have reported 1ghz...

But games like UT2004 and Halflife are playable with slight overclock...

That memory is super cheap!

Will a 2GB stick work on the E's?

I think I'd rather have 2 8GB SSD's in case on fails. Still cheaper too.

I read somewhere it requires a BIOS update, but I would think Asus would be updating the Eee PC's as they ship them out

Still tempted to get one if I sell some of my stuff I have laying around :D

910 chipset is kinda old. I would be surprised if it did handle a 2GB stick. Do you have a link on that? I also read that there is a new bios and that is not being shipped.

If you don't need a case and webcam, slightly less bat life, it would come out to 450! If you do 2 8GB, instead of the 16GB, it comes out to about $445!!!

I know heavy photshop is out of the question but how about editing pics on irfanview? Taking larger images, 1600x1200 or not much biggert, and making smaller?

BTW - When are the Merom versions supposed to come out? What about the new bigger screen versions?

I actually can't find any info about the 2GB requiring a bios update, but a lot of people on eeeuser.com are listing 2GB of 667 DDR2 in their signatures... and 8-16gb SDHC cards for storage...

I was really tempted to buy one, but I think I'm going to wait for bigger screens and faster processors.

Not till Q2 supposedly... all that was at CES was 7", 8" and 8.9" models...

8" is supposed to have the same resolution...

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=6380

This guy added GPS, blue-tooth, 2 USB hubs, FM transmitter, SDHC reader (2nd one), 4GB flash stick...

All internally.

I dunno, I didn't buy mine to modify. I've kept it stock other then opening up the full desktop (and playing with that). I already have a computer for messing around with, this is simply for work and travel. All I need to do with it fits on a handy dandy 2gb SD card.

Although, I have had it hooked up to my kb&m and monitor for a few days (like a person on life support) it ran everything pretty smoothly

I don't see how upgrading the ram is modifying, Asus said it doesn't void the warranty and intended to have the bay there so you could change memory and add something to the PCI-X slot...

quick question for you owners:

With the eee pc, is the processor speed really that noticable in its slowness? i mean, i want to buy it for my girlfriend, but i dont want it to lag and operate really slow considering her current one is pretty slow and its also a celeron processor.. does it happen for this pc?

also, can you document editors like open office or something equivalent for this linux distro?

It comes with open-office, although I can't comment on the speed as I don't own one...

yet... :)

A few posts above, Nate, said his ran smoothly at stock. Keep in mine this is flash tech so it should run a lot of apps faster than a 7200rpm HD. Of course you can only do so much. I doubt you would want to photoshop and do HEAVY apps on this. I may just do the 2g one and hold off till the new Merom CPUs come out. I really was looking for a PDA but this does so much for for the same price!!!

2G has soldered ram (no upgrading), slower processor, no webcam, smaller battery

Just some things to think about, if none of that matters than you can save $100 for a SDHC Card or some other stuff for it :D

Okay, well let me explain myself.

I don't feel the need to upgrade any components, as nothing I run on my Eee requires upgrading. The web runs fast enough and Open Office runs nicely.

If you are looking at running some different intensive apps I would say just buy a better equipped laptop with a bigger screen, but for an ultra mobile lappy, stock. This thing comes ready for whatever you absolutely need to do with it. It isn't meant for games, or video editing or even editing high res images. It's meant for access to the internet and taking notes... I mean the thing comes with a 4gb SSD. It isn't even meant to hold much information.

It's like people unlocking the 900 mhz, honestly, I can't see a reason for it... other then hooking up windows XP. Why not just buy an properly equipped xp or vista laptop from dell for $500+?

It just strikes me as odd, how people are missing the point of this little bugger.

Because it can do what those laptops do in a much smaller package.

SSD is faster and more reliable than a 5400rpm laptop drive MUCH faster... You'll spend more time waiting for Vista than you will with Linux/XP on the Eee... no matter how much faster the processor/chipset is... (within reason obviously, if you're talking about a budget laptop)

I'm planning on using this while travelling (which I do a lot of)... web, gaming, movies, music... I could use it at home but that's what a desktop is for, I'd rather type on a full-size keyboard and have a 24" screen and watch 1080p movies, unfortunately that's not really mobile or an option while "on the road"... The Eee could replace the devices I have right now...

A.) replaces my portable DVD player
B.) replaces my POS Toshiba laptop (Similar to the $500 "Properly Equipped" laptop)
C.) "could" replace my Zune but I won't get rid of it.

Spend $100 on a 250gig WD Passport drive, it's powered off a single USB 2.0 port and can hold plenty of movies/music/documents, It even comes with a short cable, velcro it to the lid of the Eee, stays in place, but can be removed if necessary :)

Spend $75 and more than quadruple your space for SSD storage, programs, games and added OS features...

And Spend $27 on a stick of ram that will increase performance overall... especially in games/programs you wouldn't expect to run on the Eee.

$600 later... 250 gigs of media storage, 20 gigs of SSD storage, 2 gigs of ram all in tiny package...

Anyone doing video-editing or image-editing on a laptop is an idiot to begin with, LCD screens suck with color accuracy first of all, and the amount of power required to do decent video editing would run you $1500-2000 in "laptop" parts... same with "gaming" laptops... it's stupid... SLI cards in a LAPTOP? 20" Screens?

The Eee is whatever you want to be, there's no "point" to it...

I asked this question in another thread, I figure I might as well ask it in here...

Could you use an EEE PC with 2gb and an external hdd, DVDRW, monitor, keyboard, and mouse as a desktop replacement? The most intensive thing I do with my computer is compress/edit ISO images, download torrents. The extent of my photo editing is GIMP, and the only video editing I'd be doing is merging 2 videos into one file. I'd be running Linux.

Well, from reading these two paragraphs, one would think the point of the Eee was to be slower than other laptops. The point is to be immensely more portable and convenient for quick, basic computing than a "standard" laptop. If it can be faster--why not? Makes it more capable than the others without impacting its functionality or the unique qualities thereof, and for not a penny more.

I see your point, and personally, I'd just install Xubuntu or similar and use it as a basic task machine. But I doubt that even the overclockers are expecting to run Photoshop or Access at high speeds on their Eees.

Absolutely. There are people doing just this. I'm not, but I do have a 17" widescreen monitor (westy), a usb keyboard and mouse, and an old 60 gig WD passport that I hook up to my 4g when I need to do something bigger. It has 3 usb ports, 2 of which are fully powered. I keep a hub with all the peripherals plugged into it by the monitor and just plug that into the unpowered usb on the left side when I need to. For the uses you described the eee would do admirably. And when you get ready to go, just unplug it and toss it into your bag (or large jacket pocket) and book. It's the best portable I've ever owned (and I currently own 5 laptops in addition to my eee).
And if xandros isn't your thing, several other distros have been modified to run well on it. I'm running a heavily modified ubuntu with no problems. In fact it does some things, like bluetooth for connecting my phone, better in my opinion.

BTW can anyone confirm if the new 2G Surfs have the memory soldered on as well...

2G surfs have soldered memory, 4g surfs do not. All models except the 8g have the ssd soldered to the mobo. The 8g uses a removable mini pcie ssd that fits in the bottom mini pcie slot in the ram bay.

Actually the 2GB and the 4GB surf models just don't have the access ports on the bottom that the other have so you need to take them apart to upgrade the RAM. Also come with smaller batteries.

4GB surf models don't have access ports so you have to void your warranty to upgrade. (By taking the entire laptop apart)

2GB only comes in surf and has soldered ram.

Via is slower, and had a slow-ass HDD...

Asus has Intel Chipset and Proc, and SSD drive... fast and reliable.

I think I'm gonna be picking up an Asus EEE soon... or wait for the next model..

I will be coming from a Macbook Pro ;)

Mine should be here tomorrow, with 2gb of ram, 16gb SDHC card and a Logitech VX nano :D

I just received my eee 4G, Black, from newegg 6 days ago, and so far, for my purposes, it's absolutely perfect. I'm in college, I have a punchy desktop, so my eee is for taking to work and to class for notes. It's small enough to take anywhere, the keys are actually big enough to type on, which was my biggest concern, and it's not powerful enough to distract me too much in class. I'm actually typing this on mine right now.
I ordered the 1 GB stick of ram, but I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference. I love it, it's damn near silent, the cam runs 640x480 @ 30fps, and it can run youtube stuff pretty smoothly. I use my SD card, but the onboard storage is not a problem for me. There's about 1.3 GB free when you get it, but that's more than enough for my notes and some small pictures. I can copy music and things off my SD card, but I don't usually listen to music on it. The speakers are of decent quality though.
I love the fast boot. The first thing I did was install full desktop mode, which brings me into a much more familiar KDE based OS, you just need to D/L a couple of things that are like 100k each. I really am thrilled, but I also use it for few things. If I didn't have a desktop, I would absolutely not consider this as a primary system, but that's just me. I like power. Does this have it? No. But it does have enough to do the basic things I want it to. It's also incredibly small, but that's another story. The battery also runs for at least 2.5 hours, apparently with about 30% left. I also wasn't using it with that in mind so the screen was about 2/3 up, so if you turn down the brightness you could probably get more out of it. I'm thrilled so far.

What Memory are you guys getting for these things? I cant figure out what kind it takes. About to order one from the egg with a 16gb sdhc card and need to know what ram to get.

People have reported supporting 16gb SDHC, I ordered one, hope it works :) I'll let you know in a few hours...

I hope it does. Im really wanting the extra space on tap. I will be using the computer for work and most of the time i wont need more than 16gb of space.

How do I play games on this? I'm a linux nub. I managed to get wine working, but when I load my game (warcraft3) it gives me a GAME.DLL not found error. Does starcraft work in this?

16GB works fine, I managed to install some hitachi micro-drive drivers which make it show up as a local-disk D, I wouldn't recommend this if you're ever planning to take the card out (I'm not)

Installing games and roms so far, $65 after coupon for the A-Data 16gb SDHC card on newegg right now w/ free shipping.

Does the Eee have two SO-DIMM's or one?

I have a couple of 200-pin DDR2 sticks (taken from my laptop when I upgraded) sitting next to me. That's why I'm asking.

Just 1

But supports 2GB sticks (I don't know if they even make 4GB sticks... or if you'd need that much)

Thanks. I was kinda confused on the specs, hence why I asked.

I was thinking about getting the 8G version but was hearing that they're making a newer model with a larger HDD capacity and better screen.
