I hope to god this thread doesnt get locked <3

then you toolbags should stop effing around. Just post up some of those pics ring.... of your servers in the flat... the 10x 320Gig file-server you got, your VMware box, etc. etc.... or.... perhaps its shens like other people said

Meh, one of the most "useless" mods in my opinion. You see a marginal difference between games as well as any linux OS and apps that you load. Too much work. Should have just Xecuter X3'd it, like me.

It has an xecuter 2.6 ;)

Yep the 128mb was pointless, but i have a freind who does that kind of thing so he was able to assist me.

Buffalo WHR-HP-54G, Motorola Surfboard VoIP modem, 160GB NAS, yate loon. :p

You guys who use untangle and other *nics... do you run software firewalls on your pc's as well?

Yes, but nobody knows what these macs are except me. Also i was thinking of locking static ip's to a mac address. So the person would have to guess the MAC and the static IP. I dont know what else to implament becuase i want to keep this network open but strictly monitored.
Even if you are the only one who does know them, they are sent openly in wireless packets so the MAC just has to be grabbed and then spoofed....

is that opensource, torrent, or etc...?

Guessing from the fact that he says he's hiding servers from his mom and the servers we haven't seen pics of but have only heard about, I'm guessing it's from a torrent. ESX at it's cheapest is around 500.

My network in its Visio form...

More later...

*Edit* There is 3.6TB of data storage across the network...

I would suggest you look into kismet a little. An attacker can sit there and sniff all of your traffic and then set the MAC and IP once they know the layout of the network if you don't have any encryption. On top of that with out even WEP some one can sit there and sniff all of your unencrypted connections gathering passwords sent in clear text. Now for your own personal network I don't think it's that big of a deal, just wanted to point this out.

QFT.

but anyways.... heres my contribution. Got a new upgrade that was "stolen" from my doorstep... I know... im a bastard ;) 8GB
NEWesx.jpg

 , also got myself a WD 500GB external for backups on my file-server which hasn't been rebuilt yet since my drive failures. For any that are wondering the TestVM is sol10 w/ 7 disks in ZFS so I can simulate all kinds of failures.

What ram are you running? (Too lazy to look).
I bought 16gigs for my Dual Dual Core Xeon 2.8 :). $200 of the list...

So you're saying you got twice as much RAM and/or CPU by telling the retailer and shipper that you never received the first shipment???

Yes there is a possibily of that, but in my area it is just full of old people, so i think the risk of this happening would be a minimum.

Is there any way to get all the AP's dotted around the house to combine into 'one big AP' for a single network?

I sincerely hope thats not what he is talking about for his sake. If it is, he's in a LOAD of crap.

Dude, it was a joke..... hence the winkey face. But anyway, I know a MASSIVE amount of people that have claimed that their PS3's and Wiis were stolen, a month later they have a shiny replacement to throw on ebay... this is why the majority of vendors insure their packages.

DDR2 677 FBDIMMs. I just talked to the place where I I got this stuff a few weeks ago... got myself another 8Gigs on the way when it gets off back order :(. Figured that Idd just max it out now and be done with it. Dual Quad Core Xeon's 1.6Ghz w/ 16GB of ram... I should be good for awhile :D

Nahh, dual athlon xp ftw!

:p you make me laugh.... such feeble hardware ya got there......;);)
ya that's coming from someone who has a dual quad core xeon rig with 16GBs of FB DIMM!!! ;) :p

Still waiting for my NIC to come so I can setup my Untangle box. Then i'll upload some pictures

* Will have 16GB of RAM when it comes in :D

You really like untangle? I think its decent... I like the GUI a lot, the whole virtual rack deal. Apparently ESX will be implementing that sometime in the distant future. The thing that I don't really care for with untangle is its ease of use, I want something thats challenging to setup and get working I guess. I After I set it up and had it running with IDS/IPS signatures, URL filtering, transparent firewalling and routing..... in less than 30 minutes(INCLUDING INSTALL TIME)....I was like.... wow, they really are making things extremely easy these days. I guess everyone will think they can build and manage a network in the future:rolleyes:... Ill stick with being an ESX and Cisco whore....

i just wanna test it out and see how I like it. I may go with another distro like Smoothwall or IPcop.

Then why bother with MAC address filtering either? It's not exactly difficult to set up WPA.

Give them all the same SSID? Think the APs might have to support roaming too?

I have less then $500 invested in this dual xeon ;)
$200 = 16gigs ram
$200 = 4u case, 500w ps, DVDrom, Intel server board, 2 Dual core 2.8 Xeons
$40 = 500gigs of Seagate Sata goodness :)

Not bad, ebay? I recently helped someone build out a similar setup minus 8 Gigs of ram. Processors were a huge road block due to the horrible engineering of that line of Xeons. He could run around 4 or so VMs and be really pushing the processor utilization. His we actually the 3.4Ghz chips too.
You have standard DDR2 ram? That ram is DIRT cheap these days... 70 bucks for a 4GB.... that's insane

Total I have in this machine:

8Gigs RAM - $565
Board + case + processors + 1TB SATA - $1534

So just over 2 grand. For a machine that can run well around 25 VMs when I get that 16Gigs... I think thats a god damn good deal for a whitebox.

I purpously stayed away from that line for exactly that reason. These are earlier Engineering Samples. Everything came from a friend at Intel.

I need to have him quote me what he can get some Quad Core Xeons for...

I can run 15 boxes on this machine without it blinking.

My poor rack hiding in my second houses attic. Its 1890 construction that I am just now insulating/drywalling.
