Has anyone used the utility XPLite? It's a utility that let’s you completely erase some of Windows unwanted programs or do repairs on them. They even have a feature that allows it to run while you install XP to make it a smaller footprint, allowing only the things you want installed to be installed. I have been looking at this utility because my Windows Media Player went haywire and it's causing all kinds of problems. I would like to use it to uninstall and reinstall media player. Has anyone used this utility? Is it safe? Does it work?

Some people swear by utilities like this an nlite, but I have seen many threads of people reporting odd problems after using them. In your case, there's no need to remove WMP, especially since it's a built-in component. If you don't like it for some reason, just install the program you'd like to use, and set your file associations. Since you state having problems with WMP, try uninstalling version 11 and re-installing it. You should be able to get it from Windows Update, or from Microsoft's website.

nLite is the one tool to use if you're interested in "trimming the fat," so to speak. It's the only XP-trimming utility worth a damn. XPLite has always been lackluster and leaves a trail of broken installs and wasted CD media behind it; nLite is solid, has a huge community of support, and nuhi knows what the hell he's doing, and with vLite as well. He's pulled off a remarkable feat with the quality tools he's created, and the fact that nLite is the defacto standard for XP-downsizing only proves that point.

As for XPLite, well, you're on your own I'd say. I used it once in the past: when it rendered the very system it was running on (a default XP install, no updates), that was enough for me to back away and never touch it again.

Not sure what the issues are you're having with Windows Media Player, but you can typically just download the clean installer and reinstall it. Ripping it out of an already installed OS then trying to reinstall it back in... that's just asking for trouble.

Thanks for pointing me towards nLite, looks much more promising.

My problem with Windows Media Player is that any movie file I try to play with it gives me the error message: "The specified module could not be found." I had WMP 9 installed for months before this began happening. This not only happens with WMP but also with Media Player Classic (which was what I primarily used). I'm not very literate when it comes to problems like these so the first thing I did was to download and install WMP 10 but the same problem occurs. Since there is no way to completely uninstall WMP, I began looking at programs like nLite... I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows just for a small problem like this...

Those this mean there is NO way to uninstall WMP no matter what program I use??? Is my only resort doing a fresh OS install (with or without nlite) to fix this video problem?

What video type exactly are you trying to play, and did it ever play before this problem. WMP will not play DVD's without codecs installed.

99% of files I played were .MPEG, .WMV, or .AVI. I never had special needs, I just watched some shows every once in awhile. Once the error message started occuring, it wouldn't play any file type and hasn't since then. theBeast64, how would I go about using VLC player to see if I'm having a codec issues?

Ok, so I installed VLC player and ALL file types will play just fine with the player. Thanks a lot, it's great to know I can watch movies again.

Does this mean that I somehow screwed up the codecs that Windows Media Player works with? Should I just forget about the problem and use VLC player or could it still cause problems in the future? I appreaciate all the help!
