Edit $65, should have put that in the Title sorry.

Limit 2 at Fry's

Just a little more than the BB deal that was going before Xmas.

Good price, debating between these and the 500GB WD AAKS for 90 I need 3 though and this is limit 2 per household LOL WTF

Considering that every time Fry's has done this type of 320GB drive deal for the past 4-6 months or so, and considering that every time the drives turn out to be 7200.10, then yeah, I'd hazard to guess they're 7200.10 drives.

It's 7200.10. The only problem with this drive is that there is a possibility you may get a drive with that dreaded firmware... search for threads on this drive if you want more info.

Best Buy had these same Seagate drives for 59.99 about 3 weeks ago... and the ususal 10% to 12% coupon is a better deal even with state tax(es).

It's available in store as well. This is from the Frys ad at latimes.com:

That's funny how they say it's not available in the stores and have it in the ad. I might just have to get one. Need to get another hdd soon and this is pretty cheap.

i may have to buy another just because i want to ditch my last PATA drive.

Just picked one up at Downer's Grove store in Illinois.

Plenty in stock.

Hey, an H'er from the area.

I might have to pick one of these drives up after work. I got one of the Maxtor/Seagate 7200.10's, wouldn't mind another.

I ordered these last week of december, can confirm 7200.10 AAE(the good) firmware

Limit 2 per Household.
(when purchased between 01/10/2008 and 01/10/2008)

so you can re order every day, they probably limited it for shipping charge purposes

Good to know! I think I am going to pass though and wait for the WD 500GB AAKS to drop back down to 89.99. I guess Fry's puts a different HD on sale every week because as soon as these hit for 64.99 the 500GB WD's went back up to 119.99, same day I was going to order them too LOL

The $7 shipping makes it an ok deal. In for one. Wish they had WD deals though. Not such a fan of Seagate.

I'm using Raptors currently for speed, how fast are these if you raid them?

These drives are 7200.10. What's the difference between 7200.9, 7200.10, or 7200.11?

Drive generation.
7200.10 have 16MB buffer and 7200.11 have 32mb buffer and is more recent. It also have faster continuous read speed but have a slightly slower seek time (if I well remember)

Sorry for a newbie question but if they say RETAIL BOXED HARD DRIVE (INSTALLATION KIT INCLUDED), does that mean the data cable is included and it is a universal data cable? Or would I need to find a SATA cable for my specific computer?

It should come with a SATA cable and it will work on your computer. They are all the same except some lock and some don't.

"Sorry for a newbie question"

Remember, there are no newbie questions, only newbie answers.

frys is such a waste of time , we have two stores here, everytime I go I dont see anything worth buying.

320 gb at 64.99 + tax 5.53 = 70.52 thats .22 cents per gig
newegg has the same drive for .26 cents per gig. ok so the drive is cheaper at frys so what

the brand i own 3 of ST3400320AS 400GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM is 99.99 at the egg thats .25 cents per gig

500 gb seagate at newegg can be had for 110 on occasion thats .22 cents per gig

500 gb western digital at the egg .20 cents per gig
750gb WD at the egg .20667 cents per gig

I have 3 seagate 400 giggers, one chirps at me occasionally , one i had to rma, and one runs fine i guess.

I have a 40 gig western digital thats over 5 years old that is still running as an operating system with heavy usage. sure its old and noisy but 5 years! and I have never had a problem with WD.

The way i see it your paying for that 5 year warranty. From now on I think a 3 year warranty should cut it for me.

My point isnt to bash one drive over another as you never know what your buying till you turn it on really, but I would like to bash on Fry's. Past 3 times up there I leave empty handed, I saw the 320 gigger and was interested but the tax kills it for me. So intead I go to look for some neoprene washers for this cooler im trying to mount and they have none whatsoever. Sure they have nylon screws bolts and washers, but no neoprene washers, maybe thats a good thing seeing as how they probably woulda cost 5 bux for 2. home depot ended up having them.

All of you people mad that you dont have a frys close to you should just be happy you dont and order your items online, you'll be saving gas and time sticking with newegg , zipzoom, clubit and so on.

Some of us get taxed at both Fry's and Newegg (and pretty much everywhere else for that matter, yay California :( ) so the lowest base price is usually the most important thing.

/rant? you have some great points, but a lot of this reflects on your unlucky personal experiences. And I'm sorry for that.

Nothing to buy?
Then don't go there. Fry's may be known to have competitive prices, but so do a lot of other places, if they didn't have competitive pricing, not that many stores would live around for too long. However, Fry's has been known for unbeatble 1-Day deals, like the Q6600 w/ motherboard for $200, as well an E66600 deal a while back. They have alot of Retail Kits that are priced less than OEM at online retailers. Buying at hard drive or processor at a store may be handled better than the packaging that some online retailers ship out. That's also important as well.

Why you leave empty-handed?
Maybe you should plan ahead, call ahead, keep-up with their ads, or just don't post and complain in this thread. IF it's regarding the drive and the deal, that's one thing, but if it's bashing on a store, post elsewhere.

TAX?
Sorry buddy, there's still tax at the retailers you've mentioned (Newegg, ZipZoomFly, Clubit). It really matters where you live, or which store you go to. I have about 5 or 6 fry's within a 50-mile vicinity. I choose to go to the city with the lowest 7.75% vs 8.5%...so forth.

Fry's Deals vs. Competitors
Some people like the convenience of going to the store locally, and maybe to some, a B&M deal means more to them vs. online deals. Consider these things. Maybe some need the parts right away, time is money, if it's a few bucks more, it doesn't matter. The fact that the parts are readily available locally, may mean the world to them, regardless of gas.

I'm tired of hearing people complaining about gas and taxes with these hot deal. Manage your trips, your time, if you can't, than don't go, settle for other alternatives, but don't need to bash on these things. Factor the costs in. Let's not turn this into a rant/complaint thread.

As for this deal, bottom line: $0.22 < $0.26 + waiting time, shipping costs, package handling factors, etc...

Wrong. Seagate OEM drives have a 5 year warranty on parts and labor.

There was someone complaining here that seagate didn't honor their warranty because the drives were OEM... Anyone have any confirmation one way or another?

I personally have had nothing but good experiences with Seagate drives (have 2 80G drives that have been running almost 24/7 since 2001). More than I can say for my WDs...

I'm considering moving to Seagate from WD and noticed the posts about the warranty on OEM drives. I just sent an email to Seagate (from their site), asking what the warranty coverage is on a retail OEM drive (via Newegg). I'll update when I get a response (I assume next week).

Update: Response was just received from Seagate, as follows:

With regards to your concern, we would like to inform you that OEM products means that when this unit was sold out of Seagate to our direct customer the warranty of the drive was also sold out with it, and regarding any warranty issues for these the customer will have to contact either the place of purchase or the Original Equipment Manufacturer.

However we can replace the drive only if it is purchased individually and not along with a system, so if you purchase the drive individually we will request you to kindly retain the proof of purchase for any future reference.

For further queries you could always e-mail us or call us on 1-800-468-3472. We will be happy to assist you.

Renee
Seagate Warranty Support.

For clarification (hate to beat a dying horse, but I do want to purchase two of the Hot Deal Seagates) I responded with:

Thank you for the very fast response! I want to be sure that I interpret your answer correctly. I understand it as: when I purchase the new OEM hard drives from Newegg, (an on-line retailer at http://www.newegg.com, your direct customer), as individual items not a part of a system, I will have a 5 year warranty with Seagate from the date of purchase.

I apologize for futhering this communication, but there are a couple of people in a technical forum ( http://www.hardforum.com ), who report that the OEM hard drives they purchased new from the same retailer listed above, were denied a warranty claim from Seagate because the drives were classed as OEM.

Thank you again for your time.

(I hope the responses from Seagate clears up any questions about the 5 year warranty for all those who want to purchase the OEM drives)

how do you check if this drive is the AAE or the bad firmware?

edit: just found out you can find it on hdtune or on the sticker on the hd.

There is a firmware update here: http://www.mediafire.com/?30ddatf19xs it is supposed to update 500gb and 320gb aak both to aam firmware but the part number of the drive has to end in -308. It's a bootable CD just download and burn then boot off the CD.

I upgraded mine as soon as I got them because two were aak, they still show aak as firmware version but the upgrade process said succesful at the end so I am not sure what the deal is.

Performance seems great with three in Matrix Raid 0 though:

wow, nice find on that
do you know if there are any benefits if your firmware is already ok (AAE) and if it's ok to do if your drives are already in a raid?
