Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

From people who got theirs at NCIXUS. Do you guys recommend paying the extra $17 or so dollars for the Express Shipping or whatever its called?

I wouldn't do express shipping... but NCIX's Express Coverage seems like a good bet, especially if you end up having to return it even once. That said, I never pay to express my shipping from anywhere though. However, I live in Ohio and shipping has still been rather quick from them to me, in my opinion.

4. Can/has anyone post(ed) pictures of their Xbox 360 running on this monitor?

Thanks so much!

I've posted pics of my 360 running on the Z model. Let me first say that, for me, 360 gaming on this monitor is outstanding. Now then, I'm well aware that there are well documented concerns associated with this monitor with respect to 360 gaming. And, in truth, I've encountered issues (that are now nonexistent) too. I still don't know the root of the problem, and I can't even definitively say how the issues were fixed.. All I know is that I no longer suffer from any real issues with my 360 and this monitor; but that's not to say someone else wouldn't suffer from the same problems.

The problems were bugged 1080p VGA and bugged 1:1 pixel mapping via VGA. When I would hook up my 360 to this monitor using a VGA cable and selected the 1080p resolution, the image never actually displayed 1080p. The image would actually set to some lower res (I can't remember off hand what the resolution was.) Also, when I would run 1:1 mapping, the image would actually be formatted as such that all 4 sides of the screen would be impacted; There would be black bars on all 4 sides of the screen.

I kept a pic of the bugged 1080p VGA 1:1 issue, . Here it is:
IMG_1280.jpg

Notice how there are black bars all around the image.

Now, since that pic was taken, the 360 in the pictured died, and I got a replacement console. I got a Halo 3 edition Xbox 360 in fact. This model has an HDMI port. I've been using the HDMI port since day one. As soon as I made the switch to HDMI the problems went away.

Here are some pics of the Halo edition console on my monitor. These are all properly displaying 1080p via HDMI with 1:1 pixel mapping turned on:

I have my 1st replacement monitor from NCIX after the one I sent back with the dark smudge in the middle. This one had several - up to 9 at one point - stuck or dead pixels. I've gotten that down to 4 noticeable stuck pixels that I can't seem to do much with after trying all the available methods. They are only apparent on a mostly black or dark background. Three of them are about 2-3 inches apart in a triangle configuration just left of dead center, and one is in the bottom left corner. I've got basically one more chance to return this one using NCIX's Express Coverage. Considering the effort involved in shipping it back for return, and the chance that the next monitor they ship to me might even have worse problems, what should I do? What would you do? So far, in most applications these pixels haven't been too distracting, but I have yet to do much with it. Thanks for your opinions!

You can receive your replacement before you send back the existing one, and if the replacement is worse, you can just keep the one you have (probably need to call ncix to tell them you're returning the "new" one). My first one had a shiny green stuck pix that you could see from a distance. So I got a replacement and it had 2 or 3 dead (black) pixels (and around 2.3 million good ones) that you really can't see unless you're hunting for them. So I'm probably going to keep the replacement and be satisfied, even though it isn't "perfect".

It's sort of a philosophical question: do you go through the effort to get perfection simply because you can, or do you make your standards a little more reasonable and save yourself some hassle? There's also an environmental argument: all that extra shipping around and restocking and reselling consumes resources for what may be a very limited benefit. I struggled with the question, but so far, I'm keeping my dead pixels and starting to forget about them. Hope this helps.

Yeah thats what I meant. So I guess I should get it huh? Thanks!

Well, I decided to go ahead and start the cross shipment and see what comes. I'm already 3-4 days into my RMA time so it would be tight to wait until the next monitor comes to evaluate it since it took 8 days to ship ground to return the other one. However if they are true to their word, then I have 15 biz days to return which ends up being the 21st or 22nd so I may in fact wait to see the new one.

I'm not expecting perfection either to be honest, but the stuck pixels were relatively near to each other and to the center of the screen. They were bright against my typical dark background as well. If they had been scattered more, not so bright, then I think it'd be different. Plus my even my wife could see them right off the bat. :D That's always telling.

Actually the new Sept 2007 build FP241W has solved all the problems with XBOX360.

My question with you is: I also have Jaunary 2007 WZ model and recently bought a XBOX 360 Halo 3 edition (Zaphyr model I believe), and when I tried to hook up to WZ via HDMI, I still get 4 bars on all sides 1080p. Why is that? Does your XBOX 360 have Falcon chipset?

Hi,

That stinks that your stuff hasn't been resolved. I've always just assumed my 360 has the Falcon chipset. At any rate, I can give you all the info (like the build date, and model number) for the 360 when I get home from work.

I really have no idea why you're still having issues.

Would this monitor be a better choice over the Dell 2407WFP-HC?

I heard it has black out issues?

Have any problems been resolved?

Here's a pretty severe issue I've encountered with this monitor. Sometimes, when I'm on my pc, the monitor will give me a whiteout. Meaning that monitor will go completely white. That's not all; once the screen goes white, it doesn't go back to normal on its own. It just stays white. In order to fix it, I have to completely reboot my computer. Has anyone else experienced this?

To those that have received screens with stuck pixels, have you tried using a 'pixel fixer' such as the one in this link? - http://www.overclock.net/monitors-displays/153953-dead-pixel-fixer.html

Apparently, the quick succession of red green and blue jolts the stuck pixels back to life. I'm getting ready to buy an FP241W next week, and it seems like i'm going to have to use this video based on recent reports of quality. It's funny that BenQ finally get the monitor right in terms of firmware/functionality but let it down with poor (-er than usual?) manfacturing quality.

On a side note, does anyone know why there's a silver and black model of this monitor? Are there any differences? The store i'll be getting mine from seems to sell silver ones which is annoying as i'd rather have had a black one to blend in with all my other equipment.

Hey, for those who bought their FP241W at Ncix.com, how long did it take to process your order?

I know I'm kind of impatient but it's been almost 3 (business) days and still shows the first three options checked. I did that phone call thing when I checked my email right after I ordered too.

Mine took six business days from placing the order to getting the shipped email. Another two business days later and the tracking number still isn't in FedEx's system, so the monitor might actually be sitting on NCIX's loading dock still.

I know it's the holidays, but NCIX's sluggishness and lack of communication has been a major disappointment. I just hope my monitor shows up without any bad pixels.

Would turning off and on the monitor solve the Whiteout problem? Since you said you have to reboot the computer to solve the problem, sounds like it is computer video card's problem. Otherwise, you could just switch to HDMI and check using XBOX 360.

Here are some 480p vs 480i (both over component) shots for the PS2, for the game Black. The settings used: overscan off, aspect 20 brightness, 50 contrast.

The VGA issue does not exist with Sept 07 FP241W. The WZ is a discontinued line.

I would love to get clarification from the fine folks here that have this monitor about a few things before I bite the bullet.

1. I have heard this monitor does not support 1:1 pixel mapping, though a new revision has brought that functionality. If I purchase this from Newegg, would I get a monitor with 1:1 support so console games and movies will not be stretched out of proportion?

2. I'll be using the monitor for console gaming as well as PC gaming, thus I would like to know how the FP241W handles the Xbox 360's 720p and 1080p resolutions via HDMI input. Does it look...amazing? (For the price, it better!:p)

3. Do you all think the image quality is vastly superior to the Westinghouse 24 incher?

4. Can/has anyone post(ed) pictures of their Xbox 360 running on this monitor?

Thanks so much!

1. don't know. i heard new egg still has some older mfg dates in stock. and from a business perspective, they may be using the "first in, first out" method for their inventory meaning that the older models get shipped out first. but i have heard that many people have received a sept 07 mfg date so they're probably just shipping them out by random.

2. i've checked 720p, 1080i, 1080p on VGA, Component, and HDMI. It handles them all like a piece of cake. monitor is a monster for being able to do so much things. The color on VGA looks dull when compared to component. but hands down, HDMI has the best color and picture. and yes, it looks amazing. I must have watched Transformers HD like 5 times on this monitor and watching it on this monitor is a wonderful experience. Trust me!

3. N/A, don't own westinghouse.

You won't regret getting this monitor. better hurry soon, this is the last batch of production for this model.

Long time no post, happy new year guys.

I also prefer VGA to Component for my 360, as Component seems to make things pixelated. VGA is smoother with the text and other textures. The colours are less vibrant but you can just set your monitor to dynamics or something to change that.

Blackout issues> I haven't had one since I've had my monitor. I have a rig that has an eVGA 8800GTS 640MB and am using a Belkin PureAV DVI-D Dual link cable, that I got on sale at NCIX a couple months ago for 19.99 from 79.99.

Every little bit helps I guess.

My coworker bought this monitor because of me haha, and he's having issues with the blackouts, but he's using an older 6800GT PCI-E with the cable that came with the monitor.

We both have the newer Sept 07 revision.

This monitor is once again absolutely stunning. I love how the whites are white and not yellowish. All shades of colours show up properly as you can tell by certain programs where columns are shaded and they show up instead of just showing up as white.

My previous monitor BenQ FP202W V1, did a great job for colour reproduction and response times, but I did have issues trying to get the right colour adjustments down to a science.

This monitor surpasses that monitor in every respect.

I personally feel this FP241W feels more expensive than the VW as well, as I had time to play with one at a local Bestbuy here in Toronto. The silver trim and plastic felt really flimsy, creaky, and cheap. Also the base doesn't have a full range of motion like our W models do.

Plus the base of the W model feels so much more solid, since it does have some weight to it.

I love the minimalistic black bezel to it, without overdoing stylistic addons like other companies do.

I've also subjectively compared this monitor to my friend's pair of 24" viewsonics and oh my goodness what a waste of money those were for him.

I believe the ones he has are TN panels because they didn't look too great and side by side one of them was dimmer than the other even with the same brightness/contrast settings.

I even tried adjusting things, but couldn't get them identical. Ouch.

He probably spent over a thousand dollars on the pair, when he could've spent less for a pair of FP241Ws.

Oh well. Many people who don't know BenQ or just buy products by brand name aren't going to be getting the best products anyways. You know, you have a few of those kinds of people directly around you. ;)

My GF wanted to build a new system so I went about picking parts out and monitors. All she kept saying was, I WANT A BIG 22" SAMSUNG.

Drove me up the wall.

Anyways good luck to those with dead pixel replacements and those who are still waiting on their orders to ship.

I'm sure you'll all be pleasantly surprised!

Cheers,
Mike

Hahahahaha.

Oh my.

There's a button at the back you have to hold to unlock it from its lowest point.

Oh how the basics escape the experts sometimes.

;)

Aw man thanks, I suspected that nub of a button was it. Apparently I had to waggle the button a little to get it to press in fully. Cool design BenQ has, the LCD despite being heavy lifts on its own(with a little help).

Haha I had to figure that out as well. Somehow the monitor got down and was stuck so I figured it must be a feature of the monitor. So I noticed that button and figured that had to be a release button. I kept pressing it and nothing happened. So I looked in the manual and it said it was that button. Apparently I wasn't pushing hard enough. So I tried it again and it worked with some more pressure.

It had felt like it was pushed down all the way before, but it needs some extra force to unlock it.

I need some help.

I heard that overscanning isn't an issue if a laptop/computer is hooked up from DVI to HDMI into the monitor, so I bought one of those cords. This solves issues because then I can use my PS3 without overscanning from HDMI to DVI.

However, with my laptop plugged in, there's no overscanning, but there's UNDERscanning. There's a black box around the entire window. Furthermore, the resolution won't go beyond 1920x1080. I need it to go 1920x1200.

When I unplug the monitor from my laptop, the laptop's screen resets to 1920x1200 native. When I plug the monitor back into it, there's a brief 5 second moment where everything is working perfectly fine. Then, in a couple flashes, the issue then reappears. It's really weird, and I can't find any solution.

Also, 1680x1050 fills the entire screen with no black bars. 1600x1200, close to the resolution I need, also has no black bars except for the left and right. Clearly the monitor just doesn't like it's native resolution over HDMI for some reason.

:edit: So it turns out that only HDMI 1.3 cables support resolutions past 1920x1200. The question is: does the monitor support 1.3?

How does this monitor compare to the LG L246WP-BN or LG L245WP-BN?

I've narrowed my choice between these 3 LCD's on Newegg, but I can't decided on which one. Spec wise they all seem to be the same, except for the BenQ being 6ms GTG, vs the 8ms (GTG also?) of the other two.

I know there isn't such a thing as a perfect monitor, but I guess what I'm asking is whatever makes these monitors not perfect, which one has the least negatives.

Coming from a Dell 2005FPW.

Can someone post their hardware/professionally calibrated settings for this monitor?

Can someone post their hardware/professionally calibrated settings for this monitor?

not sure what your asking.

the calibrator creates an ICC profile that the hardware/colormeter creates.

you using other ppl's brightness/contrast/color settings isnt a replacement for your monitor not being hardware calibrated. it wont look the same.

if i dont use the calibrated ICC profile, it looks drastically different than if i do.

your best bet is to get a hold of a colormeter.

LG L246WP vs. BenQ FP241W

From what I researched, the BenQ has a faster response time (6 ms to the LG's 8 ms), has more inputs (composite, s-video, DVI in addition to the the VGA/component/HDMI of the LG), and has fewer problems with 1080p images than the LG (if you get the September revision of the BenQ that is, which you likely will at this point).

For example, one person has reported issues with Xbox 360 video game consoles not properly displaying the 1080p signal from the console over either VGA or component (not displaying the image at all, or not giving proper 1:1 pixel mapping and thus stretching of the image vertically). A couple of people at the NCIX forums have reported 1:1 pixel mapping with the LG is fine but this directly contradicts the information obtained from this source: http://www.bexox.com/showdown.htm where the writer could not obtain a proper, 1:1 pixel mapped image in 1080p at all.

XBox 360, component video.
Looks like this monitor will not do 1080p via component video. It does not give you the 1:1 option in this mode, only Full and Original. I found that 1080i via component video looked pretty good however. Not the 1080p we all want, but not bad. The 720p mode seemed like it did a decent job scaling as well

XBox 360, VGA
Ok, now for some bad news... The 360 would not attempt to go into 1920x1080 mode. It kept kicking it back to 640x480 every time I tried. I went into the monitor menu and turned off DDI/CI so that the screen wouldn't send signal info back to the 360, but it did the same thing. Another problem I found, was when you are using VGA, you are limited to Full or 1:1 mode. So the best I could do via VGA was to set it to 1280x768 and use full mode. 1080i on component video looked better, however. I was sad that 1920x1080 would work since it did on both of the other monitors.

Even if you aren't using an 360 (or PS3) with your monitor, the causes of the above mentioned problems could be an issue with other 1080p devices and sources. Perhaps someone with the LG can comment if they too have these problems?

That writer is using ancient firmware. I 1080p over VGA is 100% fine for me. HardBob42 you didn't not read the entirety of this thread :p

I don't think any of the LG do 1080p over component at all.

Get ATI catalyst control panel. There's a slider for overscanning. Drag it to "zero".
BTW I don't think there's such a thing as HDMI "1.3" cable, all HDMI cables are equal.

gentlemen, i'm basically down to two choice:

benq: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3475188&CatId=2775

acer:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3066352&Sku=A179-2405

i know the benq is a model lower than which this forum is the official thread about, but i honestly don't see that big of a difference besides the input signals, which on the benqG2400W i can live with .. what you guys think?
That is a crappy TN like almost all new monitors these days, and not even remotely comparable to this A-MVA panel.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27648&vpn=125712-00&manufacture=Monster Cable&promoid=1019

Quick post for those of you looking to get a quality cable for a good deal.

I know many of you have heard of monoprice and their cheap but good cables.

For those of you that aren't willing to take a risk on something they haven't heard of, NCIX is having a sale on their Monster DVI cable.

Edit:: Don't worry too much about manufacturer posted refresh rates and all that. Just take it from reviews and peers who have these monitors. No detectable ghosting. That's all you have to worry about. These days most LCDs do a great job of keeping pictures nice and clear without much detectable ghosting.
By detectable, I mean with the naked eye. Yeah sure some manufacturer might advertise 2MS gaming refresh rate! Will you notice? No. Will it make your experience better? No. Absolutely not. Just worry about colour production, viewing angle, and of course overall image quality.
This monitor takes the cake.
I think I posted this a few posts back, but my cousin bought a new computer from Futureshop and it came with a 24" HP monitor. Wow it's horrible. Head on it looks fine, but it's obviously a TN panel. Just tilt your head or even adjust your seating position or even twitch and you see major colour differences.
With this monitor it looks like you're staring at a real painting or something. Doesn't change much at all, if any.
Do yourselves a favour and get this monitor while supplies last.
I sound like some BenQ spokes person, ahhaha. "While supplies last" LOL
I'm a big advocate of quality products that do what they say for a good price. That's why I love BenQ monitors, and Asus laptops.
GET IT NOW!

for my fellow fp241w owners, i was wondering if someone could verify something for me?

while using the xbox elite via hdmi at 1080p, i was able to watch HD DVD movies without any green scan lines with the "overscan" option OFF. transformers was awesome!!!

i recently purchased a toshiba HDA30 stand alone HD DVD player and set the settings on the player up to 1080p max. while watching movies on 1080p, the green scan lines show up at the bottom of the picture and i must turn "overscan" ON in order for me to remove the lines.

could someone verify for me if this is the case for the PS3 while watching bluray. Could someone check via HDMI, PS3 set to 1080p, make sure that the movie also supports 1080p playback, and with "overscan" OFF. i'd like to know if those green scan lines show up. thanks!

Just wondering - how does this Benq monitor compare to the Samsung 245T ? I'm looking for a 24" monitor for general use and gaming.

Thanks

If someone could quickly answer this, i'd be forever in your debt:

My FP241W arrived yesterday, it's manufacture date is Apr 2007. What problems am i gonna have? Am i doomed to overscan when i use consoles on it?

(i haven't opened it yet because the benq tape seal was broken (as in it's been opened in between leaving the manufacturer and getting to me) and seems to have been sealed again using regular see through tape, so i'm waiting to hear from the store on what to do before i open it).

I was really hoping for a Sept 2007 model, guess we're not as lucky in the UK. Although it seems the Sept models are experiencing more dead pixels so it might be a blessing.

As I recall, europe got the overscan fix before Sept 07, but I can't remember if it was the April or June build. Search this thread, the answer is in here someplace...

Whoa, so it was opened before it got to you? That's not good at all.

Call the store and tell them to send you another one.

Maybe they sent you an open box instead of a new one.

I would definitely send it back.

I guess since it IS already open you could check its contents to see if anything was actually opened and not just the box.

If so, then I would keep it.

I have an April build bought in France, which doesn't have the overscan option. June builds definitely have it. I wonder about May...
