I'm currently updating my HTPC, and moving to a Core 2 Duo config. Looking at today's Fry's ad, I see they're running the typical CPU/Mobo combo deals. Good price for the CPU, but sometimes not so hot a mobo. I already have a mobo, and was just looking for a deal on a CPU.

CompUSA is running a 20% discount on their in-stock CPU's. All the local store has left is 2 E6420's @ $167.20 ea., pre-tax. Perusing Fry's ad, they've got a deal on a E6550 with your choice of ECS, or Asus mATX mobo.

E6550 and Mobo $158

I figure, what the heck. I'll brave the lines to pick up the CPU, and then sell the mobo on eBay or something.

Anyways, I get to the store, do the usual transaction with the sales associate, and then head on over to the mile long checkout line. I give the check out girl the voucher for the CPU/Mobo combo. She takes it over to the cage, to get the E6550. When she comes back, she's holding a retail Intel CPU box, with a Fry's "Returned item" sticker on the side. She lays it down sticker side up, and says it's the last one they have. Hmmmm :/ Well, if it's the last 1, then I gotta take, and if it's fried I'll just bring it back. I didn't take a close look at the time, as all my minds eye was focused on/seeing was the orange sticker. I hand the lovely lady my CC, she bags everything up, and out the door I go.

As soon as I get home I decided to take a closer look at the CPU to make sure it wasn't damaged, or something is wrong. I take the box out of the bag, and flip it over. At 1st I'm surprised, but figured someone just returned the E6550 in the wrong box, but after closer inspection this is what I found:

You can see the orange returned item tag here.

Flip the box over, and.....

WTF? Verifying the UPC/Label...

   It's a Q6600, and not the E6550!!

Doh!

I haven't taken it out of the box, but it's definitely a Q6600 SLACR.
Not sure where the mix up occured on Fry's part, but I'll take it! ;) :D
No way my HTPC is going to have any issues crunching HD DVD/Blu-Ray content now!

w00t!

A Q6600 for less than $175 after taxes. Oh, and I still have the mobo to boot. Not that I'll get much for it, but hey an extra $20-30 added back from the original purchase gives me a Q6600 for <$150.

You know, what goes around comes around. If you got into trouble with the CPU, you could have a problem with RMA later.

Lucky you !! install it and oc the shit out of it !! :D

Thanks, I plan on putting into my W/C setup, so hopefully she'll OC really well.

Here's the best part of it all. 14 days ago I bought a Q6600 combo from Fry's for my gaming rig update. It too came with the same less-than-stellar ECS mobo. I bought a Abit IP35 Pro, and was going to install it all tonight. At the time, I paid $278 plus tax for that combo.

Knowing Fry's has a 15 day return policy on such parts, I can still take back the original $278 purchased items, get a refund, and then buy another E6550 combo. (to get the originally intended E6550) I doubt lightning will strike twice, but here's to hoping there hasn't been a shift change with the cage attendant!

Score!

Funny about those stickers because some of the employees aren't too bright. I bought a $10 clearance motherboard last night and the only legible sticker was a 400GB hard drive price tag that somehow got stuck on the bottom. The cashier dutifully rang up the motherboard as a 400GB hard drive until I pointed out the error.

Quickie update:

To make sure the "returned" CPU was good, I decided to do a quick load on the Abit IP35 Pro mobo, and test. Loaded XP SP2 with 4GB (2x2) of G-Skillz DDR2 1000. Currently OC'ed to 3.2Ghz @ 1.25v on a Scythe Ninja. Haven't tried to OC further, as I'm running MemTest to verify the RAM is good. (I've got to test a Patriot LLK 4GB (2x2) DDR2 800 set as well, so I need to play with the ram for now) It loaded XP without issues, and I can see all 4 cores in task manager. CPU-z sees all 4 cores too.

Time to take the $278 set back for a refund!

:D

Most of Fry's cashiers have no clue what the hell they're scanning. Hell, when I worked there, half the front checkout didn't know how to turn on a computer.

damn i wish there was a fry's near me :(
wish i got a deal that good on some of the stuff i buy

off topic- any other pc super-mega type stores in new york city?

Haha, they get parts mixed up all the time like that when retrieving them from the cage for me. They've brought me DDR instead of DDR2, laptop memory instead of desktop memory, wrong brands, and once even a Pentium D 805 instead of an 930. The screwups have always been in their favor though, never gotten something like a Q6600 for $120. :p

(Now before you laugh as me for buying a Pentium D - the 65nm ones were cool, fast, and dirt cheap. :p Highly underrated parts at the time when the cheapest Core 2 was $200 and AMD was still asking $150+ for their leftover K8 garbage.)

argh!!! why does stuff like this never happen to me! and a G0 no less!

you need to go buy yourself a lotto ticket while you're at it

to give back to the community you should consider giving away the mobo to, say....me :p

:p

lol, funny you should say that. I bought a $7 lotto scratch off earlier in the morning, and gave it to the wife. A little later she came back, and said it was a $77 winner! Hahahahahaha :D

So I went back to that same Fry's today, to return the $278 combo, and pick up another E6550 combo. (There are 3 Fry's within a 20-30min drive from my house) I got another orange stickered/returned CPU, but alas, it was a true E6550 this go around. They even made me examine the box to ensure it was a E6550. (/me thinks someone got into trouble yesterday for a missing Q6600)

Which one do you go to? Assuming that there are 3 around your house, you are in the Bay Area.

Fry's store #37 is in Irving Texas. :p

The 3 stores he probably means are Dallas, Irving, Plano.

I never realized TX has almost as many Fry's stores as SoCal now. I only have one a block away (store #8) and another 25 minutes away.

Always look at the bright side of life. :p

Yea, the bright side of life is to steal from others and laugh at them for making an error/mistake in their work time, for not seeing an "E" instead of seeing an "Q".

The bright side of life is to be egoistic and to be a bastard with no feelings whatsoever, like the thread starter is showing us. That's how you gonna be in life to get what you want.

Well, if it's the last 1, then I gotta take, and if it's fried I'll just bring it back.

The irony in all of this is that if the thing had been "fried" you would have returned it, but since it was working and it's a Quad, heck I'm using it.. I don't care if the lady has to repay the variance for the item since I have it now and she made the "bad job" which you don't know since you weren't there when it was packed.

What's with all the hostility buddy? If it were you, you probably would have done the same thing. Personally, I wouldn't have done it, but to each his own. This doesn't make me respect him any less. He is very lucky to have this happen to him. You should leave him alone with the bastardly comments you n00b.

/me thinks someone got into trouble yesterday for a missing Q6600

You know you could be prosecuted for shoplifting if they figure out when it went out and who it went to, right?

But, far more likely is that the person who rang it up and/or in the cage just lost $100 from their paycheck to cover the cost of the missing inventory.

That's not gonna happen. It was a simple mistake and they aren't gonna be able to track that. They probably have numerous people that repack products that are returned and what-not.

Agreed.

Can you believe how retarded you sound trying to look good!? You say that I wouldn't have returned it if it would have been me who got it. Plus you say that without knowing me at all.

YET You say that YOU would have returned it, assuming that I wouldn't return it but say that you would have.

What is that? Is that your defence or what? Then you're really as stupid as you look like, damn f*cking senseless retard.

You should leave him alone with the bastardly comments you n00b.

The only bastard in here is you thief, you and your friend who used a fry's deal that he got discount on, also trying to get away with Merchandise that wasn't part of that discount.

Christ, you need to calm down...

It is true, someone may have to pay the money for that guy, but that someone has likely made a mistake. You pay for them.

Christ, you need to calm down...

I am calmed down, I just dislike people who aren't honest. ;)

It is true, someone may have to pay the money for that guy, but that someone has likely made a mistake. You pay for them.

That's the wrong attitude to have as a buyer, as a human, as anything. Lets say you were the one to pay for the processor loss, wouldn't you be angry?

Why should you pay for something you don't have, would you pay for someone else's processor just because someone packed it wrong?? Now either the store or the one who packed the processor have to pay for it while he say that he would return it if it was fried then why wont he be honest about getting the wrong processor as well?

He can be honest about getting a fried processor, but he can't be honest about getting a wrong one (unless he got a worse than he ordered).

Agreed.

1. Calm down.
2. The OP could absolutely NOT be prosecuted for shoplifting. He bought an item. It is not his fault that it was not what they rang it up as, and he in no way tried to deceive them.

the guy got lucky...id do the same if i were him. hell, i work at an electrical supply house, and despite the fact that its not the same as a fry's or whatever, if i fuck up, i dont have to pay the difference out of my paycheck.

if i did, me and 1/2 the guys i work with would be in the negatives. you have no idea how many times i havent charged people for certain items because i dont see them or i write them up for the wrong items.

when companies are making as much as fry's, 100 bucks isnt huge for them, especially when the $100 is mostly profit. retail stores mark shit up like 50% give or take.

rant/

If I was the store owner of the store you work at, you would be fired from work at day one if I noticed you giving away free items, what a waste of Employer.

if you were the store owner, you would also have made these same mistakes. everyone makes mistakes bud. what do you do for work? have you ever made a mistake? i bet you have.

I've read the entire thread. I am going to bet that you haven't worked in retail, or much at all. You seem to have little understanding of the fact that mistakes happen, and everyone (INCLUDING YOU) will make them. For the sake of all employees in America, I hope that you never become a manager.

Point 2 makes NO SENSE. If it's the wrong one and it's fried he should just accept it?

Webb, you need to calm down. I am happy for what I have, an what I PAY for. You need to leave the guy alone for this. He got lucky. Big deal. And don't call me a bastard, I was merely stating that you were making bastardly comments to someone you don't know. Give him a break. I wouldn't have done it because Karma is a bitch, and I would be the one to later order a $1000.00 processor, and get a E2130 instead. Sorry that you are so mad at this guy, whom you know nothing about. He could be a preacher or something and you are talking this badly about him. Then you would really feel like a dip-shit.

This time it's you who needs to calm down. Psycho..

That's what he said, "if it's fried I'll return it" that's what he said.

He would only return the thing if it was fried, sounds as a egoistic move.

Are you serious?

I'm a psycho because I realize that the OP has does nothing wrong .

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA SO YOU ASSUME THAT I WOULD FEEL LIKE A DIPSHIT JUST BECAUSE HE WOULD BE A PREACHER? WHY WOULD A PREACHER NOT RETURN A WRONG ITEM? THEY WOULD, IT'S CALLED HONESTY.

AND WHY DO YOU THINK I BELIEVE IN GOD JUST BECAUSE I LIKE HONESTY, DOESN'T MEAN I BELIEVE IN GOD OR ANYTHING, YOU COULD BE AN ATHEIST AND STILL DO THE RIGHT THING FOR YOURSELF, BEING HONEST IS ALWAYS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

You clearly are a thickhead, so caps is the only way for you to understand..

I'm a psycho because I realize that the OP has does nothing wrong .

No, because you say that I can't be a sales manager when I'm more honest as a human, while you could just because you wouldn't report wrong item?? Pfft.

Everyone needs to calm down, the OP got lucky, good for him.

We will never see the thing and it won't affect us so why start a flame war?

No, because you say that I can't be a sales manager when I'm more honest as a human, while you could just because you wouldn't report wrong item?? Pfft.

No, I think you could be a sales manager, and that's what scares me. Based on what you've said here you shouldn't be though. If you're going to fire people for honest mistakes the first time they happen, then you will quickly have no staff.

Seriously, this self-righteous "I'm a better person" stuff is getting annoying. I'm going to bet that when it comes down to it, you're just as guilty as he is, just in different areas. No one is perfect, and before you try and say it, I know for damn sure that I'm not.
