LG L246W

Other than the possible problems correction is the exclusion of the DVI<->HDMI adapter. It comes with a new DVI<->HDMI cable without any adapter (I'm not sure if it was like that on previous units, but I think they used an adapter).

Just a quick note: the AC cord is really small (i'd say less then 1.5m). Is there any problem using an AC cord from a normal computer PSU?

It uses a standard power cable, so you can use whatever power cord you like. The one I bought back in July-ish at Best Buy came with a DVI<->HDMI cable. It doesn't carry the HDMI audio on it, though (neither does the one I bought at monoprice).

Does aynone know what the monitor settings under screen for hdmi does? There is 2 settings for hdmi there is video and pc? What does it change?

I was under the impression that it controls the sleep time. When it is under TV, it won't auto-sleep when it looses a source.

It also adjusts how it deals with overscan. On Video mode, my Xbox 360 (and PC through the same receiver) don't have overscan. On PC mode, both do (same receiver again).

If you have an Xbox or a PS3 on it, set it to Video, if you have a PC on it set it to PC.

The NVIDIA drivers won't turn off auto scaling. I want to play games that are only at 1600x1200 at that resolution and have the black bars, but the monitor overides the drivers all the time. In the menu option it's set to "full" and not 1x1 and it won't highlight it either when you're using HDMI.

Anyway around this?

I got my L246 last Thursday after ordering from Bestbuy.com. It worked for about 3 minutes, and then developed a red line, about a pixel wide, from top to bottom. I called LG,( I got right through, no waiting, good connection, and the rep spoke perfect english, Might have been the easiest warranty call I've had to make), who agreed to send me another monitor. I'm pleased to report this new monitor only has 1 tiny stuck red pixel, in the upper left hand quadrant , which doesn't show up hardly at all. Neither of the monitors had any of the other problems that some had been having. Both have very even backlighting, zero dead pixels,(not counting the stuck red one). I cannot hear any buzzing from either monitor, regardless of brightness setting. From what I can tell, the 1.1 pixel mapping works. LG got my replacement monitor to me on Christmas eve (yay DHL). Except for the single stuck red pixel, this monitor is flawless. However, the monitor has a "reconditioned " sticker on the box as well as on the back of the monitor. I was a bit surprised to see this as I thought the rep said I would get a new one. I called to make sure this would not affect my three year warranty. He assured me it would not. Could someone please tell, is it common practice for companies to issue "reconditioned" replacement lcds, even when the defective lcd was bought new, from an authorized dealer, and lasted for less than five minutes before developing problems? I've read of others getting replacements that were labeled "reconditioned". This might just be a common way companies handle things. I must say, "reconditioned" though it may be, the monitor looks perfect, all the protective plastic was still on it, all cables and paperwork were still wrapped in plastic. Maybe I just worry to much.

Yes, that's common industry practice. I wouldn't worry too much, you still have your warranty.

You sure the edges of the PS3 image wasn't cropped off? Earlier in this thread I think someone show what it should be like when it's 1:1 but it actually turns out the LG is cropping the image on all sides :\

that would be my post ;) :

(the square inside the pictures shows what I see on the LG when the PS3 is hooked up to it via HDMI @ 1080p)

I only noticed the overscan after visiting a buddy that has his PS3 hooked up to a Sony XBR4 TV, showing a lot more room on all 4 sides of the screen.
My monitor is an April 2007 build bought in September 2007 from Best Buy.

now.... just an update on this issue -

After playing around with the settings on the PS3 I found out that if you set the output mode to 1080i (not 1080p), there's NO VERTICAL OVERSCAN - meaning, the top and the bottom are no longer cut-off and are displayed properly on the screen. HOWEVER, horizontal overscan is still there (the left and right sides are still cut-off).

I have my PS3 + PC hooked up to a monoprice 2x1 HDMI switcher using a couple monoprice HDMI cables that are capable of doing 1080p... so I don't know if that's what's causing the issue or maybe that's just how it is with this monitor... a bit annoying but not enough for me to get a different monitor since I mainly use it for PC and occasionally for some BluRay movies and some gaming (I'm more of a movie guy than a gamer lol).

The only way around this issue it to first switch to 1600x1200 (or other non-native resolution) and then go into the Menu and select 1:1 pixel mapping. The option to select 1:1 should be highlighted.

My monitor has been flawless and great so far. I just noticed one thing, and am wondering if it's normal. Not that it bothers me much, if at all though.

Go to the top of a long page on hard forum, and then click the center wheel. Watch the white wheel do you notice it ghost the colors behind it along the screen? It's the only way I notice any type of what I think is ghosting... (I notice it mostly on the dark red/grey headers).

Testing appreciated :)

Edit: I have the 701 revision.... guess my best buy had old stock, but I can still exchange it if this issue doesn't exist on newer revisions.
Edit: I am using my sig rig, and the 169.25 BETA on vista x64.. the WHQL causes BSOD's (BCCode 116), freezes, and reboots

Is anyone else noticing annoying uniform color patches when playing movies in full screen? At first I thought it was just because normal DVD quality is just too low for full 1920 x 1200 resolution, but this just happened with 720p HD movies as well. It wasn't that bad with the 720p though, but still existed in dark scenes. Especially some shadows and dark shades looked all wrong when instead of softly changing dark tones there are several clear lines where the color shifts to another.

I've heard about TFT displays having problems in displaying full color ranges of HD movies and thus having some problems. I believe it is called twinkling and is quite well described in this rather old article.

I haven't read about anyone else here complaining about it, so I am wondering if there could be something wrong in just my display? Or could this be caused by graphics card (I have Palit 8800 GTS 640Mt) or HDMI > DVI cable? Even stranger is that all bright movie scenes and colors look great on this monitor and defects can be seen in some dark scenes only.

My monitor should be quite well calibrated by following advices of this site and I've also played quite a lot with nVidia Control Panel settings. Nothing seems to help considerably.

Any advice or ideas about how to fix this would be more than welcome. Also even telling if this problem exists in your L245WP or not would help a lot to determine if I for some reason have a faulty display.

As an update I've now tested this display in completely different system with different graphics card (good old Radeon 9700 Pro ;)) and also tried using anolog D-sub cable instead of bundled HDMI > DVI cable. Nothing helped. I've pretty much excluded or swapped everything that could cause problems, so either this kind of behaviour is completely normal or this particular L245WP (it is 707 Rev) is somehow defective.

It's just weird that there is no problems what so ever with light movie scenes (even if it is DVD quality only) but in dark scenes there is lots of noise in blacks and twinkling. Like if my monitor for some reason had really bad black reproduction. But shouldn't P-MVA panel have good black reproduction and least twinkling of all panel types? That and the fact that no-one else has complained about having rarely bad quality even in 720p movies makes me kind of think if there is something wrong.

EDIT: I noticed that some of this same noise / twinkling is visible in my other TFT monitor (19" VievwSonic VX922) that has a TN panel. It is just much more subtle due to smaller resolution and that must be why I haven't noticed it before. Guess it might be normal then after all especially if other people have noticed the same thing.

Does anyone know what's going on with the supply of these @ BB? Are they coming out with a new revision, or did BB just run out of stock during xmas?

I've got $150 of gift certs @ BB and I'd like to pick up a 24" lcd. I think the LG is the top runner right now, with the Gateway in second and HP in third.

I was told by the folks at Circuit City that they believe this model is discontinued because there is no more in stock on their online store and no plans to buy anymore. I then contacted LG directly and this is the response I was given:

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your continued correspondence.

This model has not actually been discontinued. Whether or not this particular dealer has them anymore is a different story. We have a potential listing for our 2008 product line, but at this time we have no information regarding release dates.

You may wish to keep a watch for a new model W2452. This 24" wide screen, Flatron monitor has a 1680 x 1050 native resolution, has a 5,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, and a 2 ms response time. At this point, this is all the information we have available on this model. This is the only 24" model currently listed.

Another option would be the new model W2600. This 26" wide screen, Flatron monitor has a 1920 x 1200 native resolution, has the capability to support full 1080p resolutions, has a 3,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, and a 2 ms response time. At this point, this is all the information we have available on this model. This is the closest model to that which you were currently seeking, without running to a smaller size.

So it seems only on the bottom right hand corner when I scroll up and down it seems to 'lag' only on the bottom right hand corner when there is a solid horizontal stripe.

This can be seen scrolling through the forum I don't have a picture, but the other areas scroll smoothly, this one area on the bottom right hand seems to 'lag' behind.

I just got the monitor today from Future shop.

Anyone have any ideas?

This is over HDMI using sRGB

Fixed it by uninstalling the ATI software, deleting a whole bunch of ATI stuff and reinstalling them :p

WOW I wonder if these are going to be TN panels. That would be horrible! And a 24" with a 1680x1050 resolution seems really dumb.

Thanks for the info though!

2ms response time would definitely indicate they are TN panels. I guess the cost of making these things has become so cheap and they are looking to increase their profits by going with TN.

Bestbuy just delisted it :-(

I noticed that last night. I know at least one of the stores by me still had some in stock. Hmmm. Maybe they are about to release those new monitors Chrisbe was told about. Those resolutions sound odd, though. 1680 x 1050 for a 24"?? 1920 x 1200 for a 26"?? Maybe just typos.

No wonder its taking so long for my monitor to arrive.

Almost 4 weeks ago I returned my LG (wich I had for 2 days) because it has one stuck red pixel. (call me a whiner) The stores policy allowed me to exchange it. But ever since I did I've been waiting for a replacement. I fear now that it will never come wich is a shame as the monitor is awesome. It was a big improvement over my current Samsung 960BF. I just hope for the best then I guess. There's still some sites with LG advertisment about this monitor and the 22" variant.

BTW. I live in the Netherlands...

Does anyone know if all L245WP's have the power led at the corner of the bezel? And then the L246WP has that kind of half diamond shape extension at the bottom of the bezel? At least all the pictures I've seen so far have it that way but could anyone confirm this.

Anyways, I decided to return that one L245WP I had before (there were two stuck white pixels besides the other problems that I suspected) and would like to order similar looking L245WP replacement where the power led is at the corner. I know it's just a minor detail, but I would definately prefer it that way.

Mine has a small __| shaped blue LED at the lower right corner. You can turn it off though.

Yep, that is how it was in my previous L245WP as well. Apparently at least the L246WP has slightly different power led design (like shown in this picture) and I am hoping that there are no L245's also with same design.

Not that I know of.

Interesting. Circuit City no longer carries them as well. I bought mine from the CC store in Queens this week for $450. It was there last one and the last one I could find in the NYC area.

Which CC was it one on Queens Blvd or one on College point
I was thinking about picking this monitor up and maybe if I stalk
long enough I get one on sale.

The one on Queens Blvd. As I said they are out of stock now and do not plan to order more.

Is anyone using this monitor with Vista and 8800GT? Mine will not wake up from sleep when I restart the computer. ANY IDEAS???

Thanks

$450 is a sale...
I know $450 was the sale , was thinking if they ever decide to get them back in stock it would be at regular retail price, and I just wait for another sale (which they do on regular basis too compete with bestbuy three blocks down on Queens Blvd)

Yeah I know but I can always hope some CC buyer makes a mistake and order more( computer glitch, an act of god, etc) thanks for info

I think the current LG 22" monitor boasts 3,000:1 contrast ratio and 2ms response time, so one could look for one of those and see if that's a clue re: what's coming next. If the new ones are TN, then I'm holding on to my L246, because I got it after taking back the Gateway 2400, which had HORRIBLE viewing angles, even though the picture and monitor were pretty.

The LG 22" does not pivot. If it's a TN like the Gateway, or like the Gateway for other reasons, then than makes sense, because the vertical/portrait viewing angles on the Gateway were worse than the horizontal/landscape ones - truly unusable, IMO.

Has anyone else had a problem where the monitor goes blank for several seconds at a time? I think it is called blanking or something. I got this monitor a few weeks ago, and all has been well until yesterday. I updated my graphics card drivers and now it seems to blank occasionally.

Is this a problem with the hardware? or is it caused by a bad driver install/bug or the like?

Mine goes blank sometimes too. I however just tolerate it, I am done trying to find the "perfect" monitor.

I set up my L246W this evening. Installed a Radeon 3870. Works great. No pixels out. Stunning. All my A/V (Cable TV with HDTV, XBOX 360 with HD-DVD, Wii) connect thru my Poineer Surround Receiver. I hooked this up to my monitor using Component Video and hooked up my PC using HDMI. PIP works as I wanted. Watching the football as I type this in the corner. and all this for $450 :)

I do have a couple of questions though. First, does LG sell the speaker for this? Does anyone have this speaker? Does anyone know where to get it? And how well does it work? And finally, what is the USB cable for that comes with the monitor?

So, apparently the speaker does not exist :( Oh well.

I noticed the monitor gets fairly warm on the top, back area. I like to leave my monitor on at all times and show picture slideshows when not using. Would this be hard on this monitor given how hot it gets? Should I turn this off when not using?

Chrisbe,

I'm not sure about the speaker, but the USB cable provides a connection for the built in USB hub on the monitor. Hook up the cable to the monitor and an open port on your PC and then you can use the built in USB ports on the side of the monitor.
