The location of the computer from the AP doesn't allow of a good signal
Would putting an a 802.11n wireless card into the PC improve the signal strength?

Also is an n wireless card compatible with a b router?

Will it improve signal strength? Yes..without question MIMO/*N is much better.

Is the increase in signal strength enough to punch through whatever causes your current problems? We cannot tell from over here.

Yes compatibility across B/G/N...they'll run only as fast as the slowest protocol.

11n will work with B however B is very old so even a cheap G router and card will do much better.

Any suggestions on a router and desktop pc wireless adapter that is 802.11n?

If you have a Linksys 54G (or other supported model) you can flash the firmware with DD-WRT and jack up the output power (to maybe 50-60 mw). That's what I did... My Linksys 54G V6 is in the basement and I get full bars even when I'm in the 3rd floor.

You would be better off getting a new router vs getting a new wireless card for increased range.
They will probably cost close to the same.

If the tin foil doesnt work, follow my recomendation (as also stated in the linked article above)

If you don't want to attach unsightly parabolic boosters and you're using the same basic router as the fellas in the video, you can also upgrade your firmware to DD-WRT—a free hack that will turn your $60 router into a $600 router and allow you to boost your Wi-Fi signal from your router's control panel.
