Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

Xbox 360 Impressions:

Despite of component producing more vibrant colors than VGA, I must say I prefer the later. When I compared both connections (1920*1080 i.e. 1080p resolution, 1:1, overscan off) I noticed that with component:
1) text looks kind of pixelated in a lot of games
2) jaggies are more visible
3) black levels in games are weak
Not sure what the reasons for this are as most people have generally said component is better but I prefer VGA by a long shot. Just a heads up to something you might want to try out (VGA cable sold separately). Some people really love extremely vibrant colors though, in which case component is for you. Try HDMI if your 360 supports it as it may have the best of both worlds.

So I just got my replacement BenQ monitor from NCIX (New) because the original had a light dead pixel directly in the center.

My replacement has 2 dead black pixels next to each other about 2 inches down from the top center. And also has a dead red pixel 3 inches from the left. Has the quality of these monitors sharply fallen since the Sept models? 2 monitors with dead pixels in a row, kind of bad odds? This is getting annoying, but I am glad I got the zero dead pixel guarentee. Maybe I should have probably gone with the LG. ;\ Also I have had 2 blackouts within first hour of use with this replacement, not that big of a deal though.

Both Sept 2007 models btw. Great start for Christmas already. :(

EDIT: On a side note, I tried one of the techniques to bring a dead pixel back. By tapping on the area you until it goes away. That actually worked... until I noticed the dead pixel actually moved an inch or two further down. LOL! How does that happen? Where the dead pixel is now, isn't even on the same X or Y Axis as where it was originally. I never tapped on that area where I moved it to so I know I didn't damage it; it seriously looks like it just moved. Anyone explain how this happens? I thought that if the pixel itself was dead, the crystal or something had hardened or just was unable to change color, didn't think the defect could actually MOVE to another pixel further and further away.

Dead pixels happen no matter what brand you go for.

Please cry more?

Obviously you face dead pixels with any monitor. It's the frequency of how often you get monitors with dead pixels. I have ordered around 4 monitors (Different brands even) previous to these 2 with 0 dead pixels. I have a $600 investment in this monitor, you better believe I am going to try to get the most perfect one I can.

Your troll account/post is unnecessary here.

I haven't tried VGA using XBOX 360, but I have tried XBOX 360 via component to a LCD HDTV. My cousin and I are really impressed that XBOX 360's component output are indistinguishable from from HDMI output. That means XBOX 360's analog circuit is very good. Likewise, for this monitor, if you connect XBOX 360 component to FP241W, it should give you almost the same result as HDMI.

My cousin did connect Wii to his Sept 07 build FP241W and he is impressed with picture quality (I assume scaling effect as well). He said looks like HD quality.

It's good to know that component can produce a great picture. Perhaps I would have needed to mess around with the monitor settings a bit more to get the best results.

I think I'll stick with VGA just for a matter of convenience: that way I can easily hook up my PC and all consoles at the same time. PC over DVI, Xbox 360 over VGA, Playstation 3 over HDMI and Wii over component. Good stuff.

I leave my monitor on the standard mode (as opposed to dynamics or movie etc.) and the default settings are 90 for brightness, 50 for contrast and 3 for sharpness.

I think that these settings are too bright but am not sure if I should simply reduce the brightness.

What settings do people here use?

Use Welder's glass for any brightness setting above 80 or just turn it DOWN. I set brightness to 28 and contrast at 42. This is my coding night-time text setting. Probably hurts the RGB curve a bit, but saves my eyes. And it's only two clicks away from 'Dynamics' mode if I need to stun small animals.

Here are some input delay pictures:

Test setup:
- ATI X1950 Pro 256MB (Asus for those that care)
- Samsung 753df CRT 1024x768 60hz (Secondary DVI with VGA adapter)
- BenQ FP241W Sept 07 bought in Canada (Primary DVI)
LCD is running at 1024x768 at 1:1 setting
- Camera is a Sony Cybershot 7.2MP, (No idea shutter speed)

I took 4 shots of this setup, conclusion is there's about 30-50ms of delay at this setting. I can assume then at 1920x1200 or any resolutions such as 1280x720 using Aspect or Full mode would increase the delay or give the same delay at the best. Sorry this CRT is ancient and can't really show 1920x1200 side by side.

i set mine to 100 contrast and about 25 brightness, sometimes 20 depending how much light is in the room on the standard setting.

there is no reason to use any of the other settings like movie, game, whatever.

Agree, one setting for all, one ring to rule them all!

so my girlfriend got the fp241w for me for christmas from NCIX. 1st impressions....AWESOME!!!! this monitor is HUGE!!!! i'm coming off a 13" macbook and i was very suprised at how huge 24" was on my desk. The colors are very vivid, no dead pixels, sept. 07 build. This monitor is sweeeeeeeet! just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for helping me make an informative decision in getting a new monitor. I definitely made the right choice. can't wait to try out 360 (hdmi) and ps3 later today.

But it doesn't matter to me much as Im in Australia and there is the Overscan fix already on it.[/QUOTE said:
Hi,
Can you get the Overscan fix in Australia by asking for it ?
I had the previous 1:1 firmware done this way.

So, after watching this product since this thread's creation, I finally decided to pull the trigger. I ordered from NCIXUS about a week ago and got a Sept. 2007 build. It is a beauty :D. After a night of playing with it, I've found 0 dead pixels, a great viewing angle, and little to no blacklight bleeding.

My only concern was while hooking up a PS3 and watching 300 (bluray outputting at 1080P), w/o over scan on i get one pixel row of green, at the very bottom (aspect mode). When i turn it to 1-1 it moves the line up to the bottom of where the 16-9 picture ends and then the black fills beyond that to the frame. I can turn over scan on, and notice no addition cutting of viewing space, the picture does not seem cropped in any way, and the green line is gone. But this is the only time I've been able to recreate this. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm going to hook it up to my 360 tomorrow and see how it does. Anyways thats to you all who have shown me what a great product this is. ;)

I have the same exact issue with mine while viewing spiderman 2 on blu ray via PS3. I was using the hdmi cable that came with the monitor. does anyone know if this issue goes away when using a better 3rd party HDMI cable? NCIX is selling an Ion HDMI cable for $10 and I was thinking about getting it if using a different HDMI cable solves this issue.

Are blackouts still a problem with this monitor or was it fixed in the september update? I'll primarily be driving it via a laptop's ATI X1600 and I think ATI cards are especially problematic. I want to get this panel over the 2407WFP because of the better scaling, studier base, and apparently better panel, but if I'm going to have blackouts every day I'd rather just get the dell.

Will buying this monitor new from NCIXUS give me a high chance of recieving a september '07 model? Simialrly, where is an A04 2407WFP pretty much guaranteed?

Blackouts are problems with digital signals. Working with graphics cards for awhile I have had people who have had blackout issues replace their card and it fixed it. Sometimes replacing the cable works. A lot of times it's an issue with the digital signal in general. Basically the blackout issue is with lots of different monitors, with all range of video cards.

The 2 monitors I've had, both blanked out on me once or twice in a week, not during movies or games, thankfully. NCIXUS and NCIX share the same warehouses... so yes on the Sept 2007 models. That's pretty much all they are shipping now. The original and the replacement that I got were both Sept 2007 models. I should have a 2nd replacement coming soon (3rd monitor) coming soon because of dead pixels. Most likely that is Sept 2007 as well.

Thanks to much of the info here, I bought one from Newegg over the weekend and got it Monday. No issues whatsoever, Sept '07 build, no dead or stuck pixels, has new firmware with 1:1 fix et al.

Terrifically bright and sharp, great blacks (and whites) colors not as true as my Viewsonic S-IPS screen but much more lively. Much easier on the eyes than the Viewsonic which caused screen door effect for me.

Just wanted to add another up-to-date comment for those considering Newegg.

Has anyone from the UK bought one of these recently? Or does anyone know if there's a UK retailer that offers a zero dead pixel policy similar to what NCIX offer? This display seems like such a gamble - might not get Sept 07 firmware (is this an issue in the UK?), might have blackouts, might have dead pixels. It's a lot of money to risk.. :(

I'm looking to buy one of these monitors, but when I looked on NCIX's website I saw some comments about how they have received their final North American shipment of these monitors. Does anyone know how this will affect support, or if the monitor needs to be replaced and there are no more left?

My replacement for my First DOA will be here monday from NCIX.

Will report back, according to the serial number its a far later Sept 2007 batch then my DOA.

how are you able to determine that it was manufactured late in september from just the serial number?

Need some info from those who have gotten replacements from NCIX. I'd call them today but they are closed so I figured I'd just post here.

My FP241W has a cluster of dead pixels at the very top of the screen. I got an RMA # for my BENQ yesterday, but am unsure what to do now since the directions from NCIX are extremely lacking.

First of all I want to get my order in for my replacement ASAP. With express coverage I'm supposed to get cross shipping including free ground shipping to me of the replacement and free ground shipping of the original back to them. The Express Coverage info just says to order another and I'll get credited back for the first purchase. Does that mean I just place an order for another monitor AND repurchase Express Coverage as well as shipping insurance and my entire first order will be refunded? Or do I not repurchase Express Coverage/shipping insurance and they transfer over to the replacement automatically? How do I get my free ground shipping, especially since that isn't even an option for the US? Do I get the cheapest option again, Fedex Express Saver USA 3 day? Is it credited back to me when they get the original?

They gave me directions for Canadian customers even though I'm a US customer.

I see this address on ncixus.com and assume this is the correct address:

ATTN: NCIXUS.com / Netlink Computer Inc. (RMA #____________)
1927 Boblett Street
Blaine, WA
98230, USA

And the directions state no markings, etc on original box. I assume that is for smaller products that ship within a regular shipping box. I can just send this back as it came, correct?

Its talking about shipping collect? Never heard of that? And which carrier should I use to send the package to them? I think the carriers they included in the reply were for Canadian Customers only.

Call them by phone--I discovered their online system isn't really set up to handle what you want to do, and there aren't really any instructions. When you get a live person, they will place another order for you and charge you, but they will set it up so that when they get the return from you, that new charge will be refunded. At least that's my experience.

Thanks to all who have contributed so helpfully to this thread. I am in the US and purchased from NCIX in mid december, shortly after they got it back in stock with supposedly the “last” North American batch. I got a Sept 2007 build, with the overscan option. I am a happy customer. Issues I had:

Screen defects and NCIX guarantee
It came with a stuck green pixel and some kind of internal smudge that created a shadow on white backgrounds (I think someone else reported one of these earlier). I had a zero dead pixel guarantee, so I had another unit shipped out to me (you gotta call NCIX to get cross shipping--their online returns system isn’t quite capable). The replacement (also Sept 07) was better even though it has three dead (black) subpixels, which you can’t really see unless you’re in licking distance of the screen. It took me several minutes to find them at first. So I think the replacement screen is a keeper. And no weird smudges on the replacement either.

Blackouts
Connected via DVI to my Mac Powerbook, the first unit tended to black out once or twice during the warm-up period, but never after that. This wasn’t a problem at all for me. The replacement screen I have now also blacks out during warm-up when connected through DVI. I didn't upgrade the cable (yet).

Colors, backlighting, contrast
Just beautiful, no complaints.

Movies
Oppo DV981HD connected directly via HDMI (using Oppo’s cable, not the crappy one that comes with the monitor). This upscaling DVD player outputs a 1080p signal. Very happy with the result. You just have to change the default Display Mode from “Full” to “1:1” (or “Aspect”--I can’t see any difference between these two settings in HDMI) to display the native 1080p signal. Obviously the Sept 07 build date is critical for this setup to work.

Calibration
I found this site very useful:
www.lagom.nl/lcd-test
I ended up with contrast at 55 and brightness at 23. I also figured out you have to leave the sharpness set at the default “3” because that’s Benq’s equivalent to “off.”

I was just about to take the plunge and purchase the FP241W from NCIX, but then my friend told me about the Gateway FHD2400. After doing some research, it seems the big drawbacks are the TN panel and backlight bleeding on the gateway. Did anyone look into this monitor before buying the FP241w?

Also, in terms of viewing angles... I'll be watching movies on the monitor, and it seems that would be difficult to do with a TN panel because of the limited viewing angles. Is this not a major problem with the BenQ?

i cant answer the first question but i can the last:

there is no viewing angle problem with this monitor when watching movies.
if its possible for you to get a calibrator for this monitor, it calibrates nicely and looks night and day better than any of the standard factory settings.

I had purchased an FDH2400. It had major issues so I returned it to BestBuy. Sorry I'm not up to speed on all the terms describing lcd issues but the top 4 inches or so of the screen would appear darker than the rest of the display. Most of the time it wasn't terrible..only slightly darker but on some backgrounds it showed up ridiculously dark so I had to take it back. I considered exchanging and trying for another but it looked like the display model might have a similar issue (though not quite as bad). On top of that Xbox360 and PS2 looked awful connected via component.

I wasn't really satisfied with any other options but ordered the FP241W about a week ago because I really needed a monitor to go with my new desktop. The picture is fantastic. The Gateway didn't look bad for PC via DVI except for the issue I mentioned above. But the BenQ is still better. Plus it looks pretty good for component input. The downsides with BenQ are that the quality control on the panels seems pretty bad right now. Seems most people are getting multiple dead/stuck pixels including me. Also there is the blackout problem. But I didn't see anything else acceptable so I tried this. I'm hoping I'll be able to get a replacement without and screen defects.

So the picture of the FP241W is a little better with PC via DVI and much much better with component input. It also seems to be built more solid. The Gateway has a better menu system and a lot more adjustable settings. If you can get one without the problem I had and are only using it for a PC it would work well. But you are talking about viewing angles and I don't think they were too great with the Gateway. BenQ is very good w/ viewing angles though.

my monitor seems to be flawless from ncix. no dead pixels, i don't notice any backlight bleeding, maybe a little on the top left corner. but it doesn't bother me. also, i have my macbook connected via DVI-D (not DVI-I that the monitor provides) and have not experienced a blackout since i've had it. i bought this DVI-D cable from monoprice. it works fantastic! i love this monitor and am very blessed with its performance.

the only gripe i have is when playing High-Def movies via HDMI or component. i'm getting a green/purple line at the very bottom of the picture. when watching HDTV, i'm getting a green line at both the bottom and the left end of the picture. the only way i can think of fixing it is to turn overscan "ON" while watching it on aspect or 1:1. anyone else know how to get that green line to disappear without turning overscan "ON" or am i doomed to watch High-Def with overscan? playing games on HDMI or component works just fine.

When watching HD programmings, some channels will show up with thin scan lines either on top or bottom. That is normal. You can use other HDTV to check for that too, 1:1 pixel mapping setting of course. That is what overscan function for, to mask those encoding lines.

I just bought a Gateway HD2400 and the black light problem is mostly quality control. Some have it some don't. I, personally don't have any with mine. The thing to watch out for is the progressive worsening of the BLB. People have reported to not notice much BLB, then 3 or 4 days later, it gets really worse.

actually, that is not the source of the problem. after researching through these threads, someone stated that the green line was only present on 1080i with this monitor. realizing i was hooking up an xbox 360 with HD DVD through component, the max res component seems to output was 1080i only even though i set the xbox to 1080p.

to verify this statement, i changed my xbox settings to 720p and no green line through the same component input while watching hd dvd. to further confirm this statment, i hooked up my other xbox with HDMI and set it to 1080p. no green line while watching HD DVD.

on a side note RB30, HDTV programming is currently only at 1080i, not 1080p. that's why scan lines may appear on certain channels. if your a purist like me when watching movies or tv, overscan option should never be used b/c you lose about 5% of the picture (that's a lot by my standards). I have 3 different HDTVs and not once did i see green scan lines on them. one is a 50" plasma and the other 2 are 50"+ DLPs (unless these TVs overscan by default b/c i don't have an overscan option in the settings). try to steer clear from any HDTVs that show scan lines while watching TV, it may be due to the 1080i resolution. we don't know when tv stations will begin sending out 1080p signals. we may be watching tv on 1080i for a while.

so hopefully for anyone in the future that runs into this green scan line issue, its only evident in 1080i.

I ordered myself an FP241W last week from Newegg, got it today and it most definitely is a September 2007 revision. It seems that Newegg has finally depleted their stock of the old revision.

I have my 1st replacement monitor from NCIX after the one I sent back with the dark smudge in the middle. This one had several - up to 9 at one point - stuck or dead pixels. I've gotten that down to 4 noticeable stuck pixels that I can't seem to do much with after trying all the available methods. They are only apparent on a mostly black or dark background. Three of them are about 2-3 inches apart in a triangle configuration just left of dead center, and one is in the bottom left corner. I've got basically one more chance to return this one using NCIX's Express Coverage. Considering the effort involved in shipping it back for return, and the chance that the next monitor they ship to me might even have worse problems, what should I do? What would you do? So far, in most applications these pixels haven't been too distracting, but I have yet to do much with it. Thanks for your opinions!

I just got my 2nd replacement (3rd monitor) and this one was perfect. No dead pixels, it did have a scuff on it I thought was a scratch. But I was able to clean it off with some water and a towel. /relief

Third monitor times the charm.

As to the guy above me:
"After three Express Coverage exchange attempts, customers will be given the option to select a different model, or offered a refund for the monitor. Express Coverage fee will not be refunded."

You've been through one replacement, you still have two more. According to the wording after 3 exchange attempts (not 3 monitors--so 4 monitors total) then they will offer you the refund/exchange, then I guess if you REALLY want it. Just take the refund and repurchase it all and start over. :p

Thank the lord it only took me two replacements, I would of been annoyed had it gone on to the third. Anywho, hope you have better luck.

It definitely seems to me like the September models have more quality control issues than the previous ones? 2/3 monitors I had, had dead pixels in the center area. Also if anyone is still interested, all 3 monitors I got were September 2007 models. I am fairly sure all of their warehouse stock is just the Sept models.

P.S. NCIX just dropped the price to $554.94 from $560ish. Not much, but oh well. I did get it originally for 551.37 they had some type of one day sale for them back in December.

It's pretty well known by now that HDMI doesn't seem to suffer from any overscanning if connected through DVI --> HDMI with a PC with the latest drivers. However, can an HDMI cable support 1920 by 1200, which is 120 more lines than 1080p? I'd hate to have my laptop's native resolution suffer.

Thanks.

:edit: HDMI supports 1440p. Wikipedia is my friend.

I would love to get clarification from the fine folks here that have this monitor about a few things before I bite the bullet.

1. I have heard this monitor does not support 1:1 pixel mapping, though a new revision has brought that functionality. If I purchase this from Newegg, would I get a monitor with 1:1 support so console games and movies will not be stretched out of proportion?

2. I'll be using the monitor for console gaming as well as PC gaming, thus I would like to know how the FP241W handles the Xbox 360's 720p and 1080p resolutions via HDMI input. Does it look...amazing? (For the price, it better!:p)

3. Do you all think the image quality is vastly superior to the Westinghouse 24 incher?

4. Can/has anyone post(ed) pictures of their Xbox 360 running on this monitor?

Thanks so much!

Yeah so many bad panels out there. Hope my 2nd is alright. I couldn't decide whether to send the 1st back or not but today finally got though to someone to start cross shipping a replacement..1 stuck pixel on the right side that isn't very noticeable and two hot pixels on the very right side, also hardly noticeably.

The main problem is just a small diagonal line about 2 pixels wide and 5 high. Either dead pixels or more likely some other screen defect. A clear reason to return except that is on the absolute top of the screen, though in the center. But since it is at the absolute top it doesn't really get in the way and isn't very noticeable on dark backgrounds. Never had a dead pixel on any product before (2 lcd monitors, 1 lcd hdtv, 2 laptops). Such a hassle to do all this shipping especially since I have no backup monitor for my desktop.
