With all the news about the new UT3 community in crysis (LOL!) I thought it would be interesting to see which version of UT you choose to play if you were hosting say a LAN game with your 8 buddies.

UT99
UT2003
UT2004
UT3

Ive left off UT2 with the multiplayer mode enabled, and left off the original Unreal Single player game.

Remember... the poll is about which one you would actually PLAY now for fun.. not 'back in the glory days I would play XXX all night'

poll up in a min..

As much as I liked the original UT, UT2004 was just awesome. Onslaught completely nailed it, in terms of gameplay experience.

A version of UT3 that is actually good (this would probably require redoing the whole damn game and calling it UT4).

I played 99 to death, and enjoyed every moment.

2k3 wasn't that great, but had its moments... it also paved the way for 2k4.

2k4 was great for a long while. Then CTF died, and I got into TAM... which was also great for a while.

I was really looking forward to the next level... and am currently very disappointed.

As far as LAN parties go, my buds and I still do 99 sometimes. We like load up Matrix Moves Mod with it too.

I want fixed UT3.

De-obfuscated ini files.
Full menu customization.
Proper server browser/sorter/searcher.
Appropriate playerbase.

Doesn't look like that's going to happen. They're blaming low PC sales for their move to consoles, but it seems that their move to consoles is killing PC sales. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, imo.

Edit: Ooh! And if I can have it, I want U2 creatures for Invasion in UT3. UT2k4 got U1 creatures, so UT3 should get U2 creatures, hey? That would make me buy it today.

UT99 although UT2K4 Onslaught was more fun than TDM with my pals. They only played each other and had evolved some highly unadaptive behaviors as a group.

Easy, UT99. Great mutator selection, assult, wonderful CTF maps, and EVERY computer can run it.

It is still one of the best bread and butter multiplayer games out there.

UT99 was, is, and probably will be the best UT game. A classic example of getting it right the first time.

UT2004 is also good, albeit in a different way since they changed a lot of the game mechanics. I don't think it's really possible to compare the two directly, since aside from the name, weapons, and some of the modes, the two games are almost completely different. UT3 has good game mechanics, but it just doesn't have enough content.

I preferred 2k4 overall, although I do have fond memories of UT99.
Could care less about 2k3, was unimpressed by UT3 demo & haven't played retail.

I've done so much of UT99 and UT2004 that I'm eager for a change. UT3 is what I would go with now.

UT2004. I miss onslaught and assault sooo much. It will remain as one of the greatest fraggers ever.

I need to reinstall it soon. I was pretty good at release. Random people made threads about me in Epic forums about my disappearance. :p

I like UT3, but the way they screwed up onslaught and turned into "warfare" and tried to explain it with story in the single player game was lame. I too missed assault but the problem was that not enough maps were made for it. The same maps got boring to me after awhile.

UT2004 remains my favorite in the series.

I think UT3 is much like UT2003 was. It was a good game, but it was missing something. Some minor tuning and Onslaught mode made it much better. Hopefully UT3 will get a similar type of update.

I expect this will happen. When UT2003 came out, the major complaint was that there just wasn't much to the game, and a lot of the content they were working on was removed in order to get the game out the door. Hopefully Epic will do the same thing they did with 2004 and update UT3 with a ton of new content and release it properly. As it is, I pretty much got bored of the game already since none of the maps really appeal to me and I've already played them all plenty of times.

UT3

but:
- the linux version isnt out
- my mates dont play FPS's, so we never lan
- even if they would, most of my mates systems would only do so-so, or even struggle with ut2k4, so ut3 would be way too much to ask.

but im pretty interested in ut3, ive only played the demo, back on windows.

once the linux client is out, ill probably pick up the game sometime

UT3. UT2k4 was well made, but the gameplay was very flawed in many areas. For DM, having the shield gun and hitscan dominant weapons made it a very defensive and boring game. For ONS, it was so linear and flawed in the fact that it was basically impossible to make a comeback. Once one team got ahead you might as well just give up. Especially maps like torlan. On the other hand UT3 got the DM gameplay down much better. It's more aggressive and incourages it rather than rewarding running. The orb allows comebacks and balanced gameplay in WAR. If you think 2k4 had better core gameplay than UT3, it's because you haven't played either enough. The only thing I would play 2k4 for is assault.

damn, some tacos sound really good right about now...

I picked ut2k4 because of ONS. I have tried several times to get into ut3, but it's just not happening. It might be better on a lan, but none of my other computers can run it.

Well I picked up UT2004 because of Onslaught and to a lesser extent Assault. What really kept me playing UT2004 for so long was all the maps and mods out there for it.

One thing I don't like about UT3 is the maps. I hate all the Warfare maps, and though some of the death match maps are decent. I would like some different ones. Some larger, some simpler maps would be good. All the DM maps seem too small for the most part. In fact the map I play the Most is Deck, which is nothing more than a restyled Deck 17 from the previous 3 games.

The game feels right in terms of physics, speed and movement, but the maps are just too cramped.

I and my wife play UT99 lan to this very day.Its yet to be beat in my eyes on raw fun alone for multiplayer.Only UT2004 came close, but still no cigar.UT3 is trash IMHO.As are the people at Epic that have treated the community, and its many opinions and points of advice, like pariahs and lepers on the official forums.
