512 GT vs. 512 GTS....

well every bit of information that you need to make that decision is on Hardocp or one of the other numerous sites that have reviewed both cards. its up to you to determine if its worth it or not. ;)

To me, no. But maybe if by the time my step-up expires, I'll step-up to that or a GTX if the new nvidia cards arent out by then. I just don't see the jump in performance with the extra SP's to justify the price.

The biggest benefit to me was that the 8800GTS seems to overclock much better than the 8800GT, that's why I got it. However, everyone's needs are different :D.

Nope, get a 8800GT and call it a day, or if you can afford to wait for 9 Series, do that.

The GTS I have definitely overclocks better than my 2 GT's. I still would get the GT however because the performance difference isn't even noticeable once you overclock the GT, you're basically beyond stock GTS at that point.

The GTS has about 12.5% more SP's, so (all things being equal) the 8800gt would have to be clocked aggressively higher than the GTS for it to reach the same performance. An overclocked GTS and no way, because clock for clock the GTS will always be faster.

Just askin' for opinions bro....

I wouldnt pay $100 more for a 512meg GTS, however Im around these parts the average GTS isnt $100 more than the average GT, more like $50-80. And when you're in the 50-70 dollar range it comes down to availability and bundles imo.

I got in on the fry's deal for 235 GT cards and im going to sell those on ebay for probably close to 300, paid 360 per for my GTS cards and i'll be able to sell the copy of crysis that comes with each for probably 20 bucks per bringing the price of the card down to to 340 each. So for me, i'll have spent around 40 bucks more to go from the GT to the GTS and this will also keep me within the "supposed" release of the new cards within my stepup period. Buying the GTS over the GT all comes down to how much you are having to pay for the GT vs GTS.

The 8800gts 512 runs cooler and runs a little faster than the 8800gt and of course a bit more money to get. Most will say, buy a 8800gt, get a better cooler(evga has an excellent warranty for this) and enjoy it. Within 90 days (if you have a evga) see if you would like to step up to the 9 series. Personally, I will wait for the 9 series.

Has anyone found a site that compares a 700MHz GT to a 650 GTS when driving a 1920x1200 display?

There is only about a $20 to $40 difference for these two cards. so a 12% fps improvement would be worth it.

GTS is 3 or 4 FPS faster than GT, Stock, clock your 8800GT up to 650MHZ and they are virtually identical. I think Nvidia flopped lowering the GTS to the 256bit bus of the GT because the cards run virtually identical at the same speeds, it just seems stupid to spend more money for a GTS as it really gains you nothing. I suspect they lowered the bus on the GTS though because they will come out with an Ultra version g92 with 384bit bus which will be the flagship 8800 series and if the GTS had the same 384bit then noone would buy the ultra just like noone is buying the GTS right now, opting for the cheaper GT instead. Either that or they just lowered the bus to 256 on the GTS so it wouldn't be faster than the Ultra and they could just keep Ultra as flagship card without updating.

Either way it's pretty much pointless to spend the extra money on a GTS.

Just askin' for opinions bro....
well a video card is not like buying a car. the only things that matter with a video card are the numbers. performance, noise, heat, power consumption and price are what matters. you should be able to easily make up your own mind based on the actual reviews. most individual opinions are useless. ;)

Don't rely on others to tell you what to do. Read the article, check out the numbers, and decide for yourself. There's an across-the-board performance advantage to the 512MB GTS, but only you can decide if it's worth it for your needs.
exactly

One thing to consider about GT vs GTS is the cooler. I suspect nVidia purposely designed it with weaker one-slot cooler to cap GT's capability. Many GT owners are getting aftermarket coolers, which adds additional cost to GT.

So for GT, you're looking to spend at least $30-40 to get a decent cooling. That puts the 512MB GT price range to $280-330 instead of $250-300. It's not as big hop to GTS at that level. For me, I've ordered the $300 BFG GTS, so that hop is even smaller.

Same here.

I was looking at an EVGA 8800GT Superclock and since the 8800GTS OC from BFG was only 11 bucks more it was a no brainer.

so far im running my GT at 755/1810/2000. GTS, no need... Save your $100 bucks...

Well here is my sob story. I bought the BFG 8800 GT OC from Best Buy for $219.00 last night I made an impulse buy of the BFG 8800 GTS OC for $300($310 plus shipping). Now I know that across the board the GTS is about 10% faster than the GT so for me the I believe the cost for the GTS should be about $240 if we go strictly price performance. So the question is would the 10% be worth the 70 bucks. Just looking for some more opinions. FYI this is about the max I'll play for a video card so that is why I'm having this buyers remorse so to speak. Also I do have a 24 inch monitor if that makes a difference.

how did you get it for $219?

I want to see benches comparing a GTS @ 800 MHz to a GT @ ~700 MHz because that's what we're seeing with the overclocks. That being said, with an extra 100 MHz after overclocking, more shaders, and more shader/memory speed, I'm sure the GTS will be faster, but is it $100 faster? Will you really notice the difference? Hmmmm. I think it's wiser to get a GT, play every game in sight except Crysis, and wait for GF9. That's what I did. Overclocking can only do so much. We need a new architecture.

Now the silly people eying overpriced GTs and planning on slapping $20-$40 coolers on them might want to reconsider and just buy a GTS.....

yes but will a GT at STOCK settings me sufficient with the standard cooler?

I'm not familiar with this term "stock settings." I think you're in the wrong forum. ;)

All joking aside, of course the stock cooler is fine for stock settings.

Well my BFG 8800GT(675/1950) ran loaded at 90-95c. Was going to change to aftermarket cooling and lose my warranty but the [H] deal came along and i jumped on it. For $55 bucks more I get to keep my warranty, have a better cooler, and have about the same performance(with some headroom in the future to O/C even more). For me this was a very good oportunity. Thanks Kyle and thanks BFG!

I was wondering the same thing last night and I came to the conclusion that it is totally not worth the extra money.

even the 8800GTS 512mb runs toasty. all you have to do is turn up the fan speed if you want either card to run cooler.

GTS all the way. Feel sorry for those who jumped on the GT and got a pathetic excuse for a cooler... card runs too hot and now they've changed it.
Plus it is faster!

I went with the GTS because I found it for 319 after rebate with a game I wanted bundled, (XFX Alpha Dog + CoH from TigerDirect). That said I'm quite aware it's a marginal upgrade and nothing more, but I plan to play around with the OC-ability and see what happens...but frankly, I shouldn't need to OC it, or get an aftermarket cooler for it, and that's worth something to the very lazy. ;)

If money is even slightly an issue, go find a cheaper GT, you'll be fine. I made a conscious decision to spend the extra dorrah for the tiny bit of extra power and etc. Plus, the GT was out of stock everywhere/inflated to all hell when I made my purchase. Yes, impatience...
