65nm BFGTech GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB @ [H]

don't listen to conscript! he's a cylon!

Agreed Crysis is just one game, hower it is truely graphically superior to anything else out there at the moment. Having a play with the Sandbox myself, i can see the true power of the engine and easily see a number of future games based on its engine..

Next time you are in UT3, have a good look at the background scenery like trees etc, they are actually 2D and of course the area itself is vastly smaller than Crysis.

The reality is however new game like it are probably a year+ away and by then most enthusiasts have or are looking to move on.

I like to see some RPG's made with the engine, with a lot of HUGE outdoor areas..

There's really nothing wrong with this review, or this card when it's considered as a refresh of the previous GTS.

Obviously that is the way that nvidia thinks of it, as they did not give it a 8900 or even 8850 nomenclature.

No real reason to upgrade from an old GTS to a new gts. So it's not a very "exciting card" but it's still the choice for those who want to run a 24", game, and not completely break the bank.

My dual 8800gtx's in SLI on the 30", there's still nothing to beat them but i'm not that disappointed over it. High resolution gaming takes a LOT more pixel pushing... the 30" is almost TWICE the pixels of a 24" monitor. Running AA makes it even worse.

Anyone looking to buy a card today should be happy with the choices, except maybe the real high end folk who are waiting for a new GTX/Ultra as it's been a year.

The GT is a great value and a great card for the 20" and lower folk. I agree with Kyle that you want the GTS still for 20-24" monitors. Especially if you like your IQ, AA, etc. You CAN run a GT, overclocked, with a costco 24" cheapo and get away with it but for the little extra money you get a GTS and a nice Ultrasharp 24" and end up with a much better experience.

Single GTX's are the ones left out a bit, for the 24" owner who wants to have a bit more than the GTS brings and doesn't mind buying a year old card instead of waiting.

I am still of the opinion you NEED sli 8800GTX+ for 30" gaming proper, after playing around on my system for the past year. I like to have AA, AF, and medium to very high quality settings on everything.

When we see the next GTX, 8900? I think we will see a $550+ card that you can run single on a 30", a price drop on the GTS, and 6+ months of dominance from this card at the top of the market.

I'll still be SLI'ing them for even more goodness.

OMG....that'd be awesome. Elder Scrolls V anyone?

On topic: Good review Brent. I think this would be the card the get if someone was upgrading right now to a new, high-end card. It performs about as well as the GTX and is cheaper, runs cooler, and draws less power. But for those of us that already have older GTS's or GTX's this card really doesn't give us anything new and exciting. In the end it doesn't really make me want to buy a new card. My GTS is still holding it's own quite well in today's games and until there's a large jump in performance with a new flagship card, I'm going to stand pat with what I have.

Dunno if anyone has mentioned this, but NCIX has these new cards for 349.99 Canadian, and the 8800gt for 249.99 Canadian...both the stock and the Galaxy with the zalman-type cooler (both 512mb)...with 9.99 express shipping! (within canada...still, price does not look too bad, eh?)

So, I have a question, I am looking to get the evga 8800GTS 512mb, but I am wondering about the step up program..

We have no idea on next release dates, or anything, do we? I want to take advantage of this eventually, but want to get this card first to see how it does, will handle what I want it to do.

I'm sure it will beat my setup now, but hey, who's counting!

It would be nice to see an Apples to Apples comparison of the old 8800GTS 640MB against the new 8800GTS 512MB. Possibly both in SLI as well? I think it would be interesting to see the advantages or disadvantages of the differences between the memory
bandwidth and stream processors along with the clock differences.

I would like to know in SLI if the memory bandwidth is that big of an issue. Im currently running an old 640MB and would like to know if purchasing another before they're gone for good from the retail channels would be a wise choice or not.

Someone help me make a decision.

I got the dell deal ($208 for an 8800GT) XFX ran out, so I ended up with the evga @650. I have a buddy who will buy it from me for what I paid. I want to do an SLI setup. Should I just wait till the 8800's come down to normal again, and pick another one up (Im guessing a month or so). Or should I jump on this BFG deal, get my SLI setup now and sell my gt?

your post makes absolutely no sense

Hey Kyle,

Thanks for the deal on the front page!!

I was able to get one! Thanks!

Dell had a deal at the beginning of December, 8800GT for $208. This was for XFX 675MHz card. I bought one. They mistakenly cancelled my order and ran out of the XFX, so after I bitched, I wound up getting the evga 650MHz version for the same price. I actually wanted two cards, but they only gave me one at that price. I have a friend of mine who wants to buy this card for what I paid for it. So now, should I sell my card and jump on this deal for the BFG GTS cards (get two for SLI $600) or wait until the 8800GT comes down again and just get another one later.

Will the Zalman VF900cu fit the 8800 GTS 512mb BFG card? If yes, I'm buying it right now.

im sure it would but the gts doesnt have a overheating problem anyway.

But you don't know for sure? I know it doesn't fit the 8800 GTS 320/640, but it does fit the 8800 GT. Can anyone who isn't guessing chime in?

I'm more curious about the noise. Anyone with one have any opinions on how loud/quiet it is compared to whatever old video card you had? (I'd be upgrading from a 7800 GT.)

I want to throw in my 2 cents! :)

The last time I built a computer was when the 5900ultra was the top dog! Since then I have had various computers from local shops and even a M170 Dell laptop :) I recently decided to build a new computer to get back into things and find a good performance/value desktop. The 8800GTS 512MB from EVGA was my pick vs the 8800GT. I don't own Crysis so the $360 price point of the GTS is a very good deal! I think that assuming you are going to use the stock heat sink/fan the cooling/sound is much better on the GTS. I have read a lot of user reviews and heat/sound seems to be a problem with the GT. That was my deciding factor for which video card to get. Also with the EVGA 90 day step up program you will possibly get the chance to upgrade to an 9series card early next year. If you plan on using a water cooling setup then the GT looks better since you can handle the increase in temps better and sound is no longer an issue. Hope this view helps.

I got mine yesterday and installed...Amazing I must say compared to my X1900 crossfire setup..Picture quality is awesome!!

Now how do I see how hot she's running?

are you kidding? looking at your sig I cant imagine that you dont know how to do something simple like check your gpu temp.

Lets see, I spent the last 2 years with an X1900 Crossfire setup..I've got to learn Nvidia all over again...Last nvidia I had is in my womans system, 7800GT's

Because when I try to check them in the FW drivers, it says it's a performance feature, guiding me to nTune or whatever..I don't need that do I?

Does coolbits still work nowadays?!?

well I always use ntune or rivatuner. ;)

Yep Rivatuner is great and ATITool is good for checking max clocks as well.
Rivatuner changed I from years ago...I can't find the temp..

Where would it be...

*drools*

Guess what I'm buying at tax time? :p

Great and thorough review as always Brent and Kyle. Keep it up. :D

wohoo I just got mine in today to replace my old 8800 GTS 640MB. I'm having some major issues simply because I can't revert back to the 169.04 beta drivers (the last time Nvidia scaling still worked)

Just ran 3d mark, a pretty decent bump in fps
This is all stock on a E6600

8800 GTS 640MB

1 - Return to Proxycon 35.022 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 34.739 FPS

HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 36.512 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 43.748 FPS

8800 GTS 512MB

1 - Return to Proxycon 39.04 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 39.477 FPS

HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 53.178 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 50.099 FPS

yeah the boost aint bad, Crysis definitely runs a bit smother on the same settings I used before. I just hope I get a decent return on ebaying my old 640MB. I rushed to get that one when I built my new PC and spent $400 on it =(............
As long as I can sell my old one for about $290, i'm happy

I know how that goes. I got a 7800 GT when I built my computer for somewhere around $350 (after rebate no less). Which is a lot better than the $450 some early-adopters paid, but it dropped to $300 (no rebate required) very shortly after. Then not too many months later, the 7900 GT came out and obsoleted my 7800 GT, being better at the same price. I guess that's life in the hi-tech fast-lane. :)

Pulled the trigger thanks to the discount (thanks Kyle), this card owns. It runs every game I throw at it beautifully @ 1680x1050 with the highest quality settings.

I've bought this card just because it was $300. I have also 2 Visiontek crossfire that I got from BB, also from the forum. All I can say I'm returning the ATI's and will never do SLI or Crossfire again. The benefits are good only for benchmarks but playing games is a different story. I've scored almost 17K+ with 8800GTS and 19k+ with HD3870 CF, both overclocked, but only 8800GTS was playable and didn't crash. Maybe because of better driver support but it's always nice to exit to Windows when you're done playing. And BFG has a winner here. I was impressed to see that this single card has higher FPS in COD4 (1680x1050 AA x4) and Crysis (1680x1050 high settings) and how stable it was @ 775/1000. Sayonara ATI!!!

Upgraded from 7800GTX SLI, and the results are phenomenal.

My 7800GTX SLI's, heavily OC'd couldn't run COD4 at respectable frame rates @ 1600x1200 | everything cranked up.

Now, one 8800GTS (G92), clocked at 750 | 1050 makes COD4 bound by my CPU at 80FPS. Even Crysis runs at 40-50FPS @ 1600x1200 | 2xAA | with everything cranked up.

Started playing crysis through again, Compared to my 90nm Oced 640MB 8800 GTS the Framerate stability on "tweaked high" is much better. Makes the game much more enjoyable.
Still had some issues with company of heroes Opposing fronts though, but I'm guessing that has more to do with my CPU.

Another question, is there an alternative program to RivaTuner? for some Reason RivaTuner doesn't work with this card for me w/ 169.25 Driver. I can't access any of the card's settings.
