My dad bought me a laptop (well he paid for it, I selected everything).

Its a Compaq V6500Z with the following specs:

Vista Home Basic (eeewww, will talk on that in a min)
Athlon 64 X2 Mobile (Socket S1, should be able to upgrade if needed)
15.4 WXGA "High-Definition" screen
1GB DDR2
Nvidia 7150M
Standard wireless (need to do a little research on the finding out the model)
"SuperMulti" 8x DVD burner
120GB SATA 5400rpm Hard Drive
High Capacity 6 cell battery

I'm planning on dual booting XP Pro and Ubuntu 7.10.
I'm not really a power user but, wanted something that would still provide decent performance (In my sense, most people on here would look at this and call it complete shit).

So for a 17 year old looking for something basic for home and school did I do good?

I don't know if the issue has been resolved yet but as I last heard ubuntu 7.10 is wreaking havoc on laptop hard drives right now. so make sure you check that before installing. secondly you will want to make sure someone or some group has a list of Xp drivers for you. with laptops it's becoming increasingly hard to find Xp drivers for newer laptops... that's about all I can think of

I do need to check on the XP drivers more into detail.

I haven't heard about the Ubuntu problem, can you enlighten me a little?
