Google has just announced that it has integrated AIM into Gmail. I don’t know how many of you actually use AIM but for Gmail users that do, this is pretty cool.

Gmail has had its own chat service since February 2006, but now Gmail users will be able to connect to AIM through a drop-down menu on the Gmail Web page, Google said. Gmail users can sign into AIM through the "set status here" menu, Google said. AIM contacts and Gmail chat will appear on the same menu.

That's pretty cool. Could be useful if you're on a computer without AIM and want to do some chatting online. I just gave it a try and it seems to be integrated pretty well. I like how you can choose either to dock the messaging windows on the bottom of the browser or have it as a separate window. I wish you have some more customization options for the buddy list (i.e. making it wider, or even being able to undock it like the chat windows), but that might be too much to ask considering it's through a webmail system.

Great! I guess...

Just keep that IM crap in the background.

Alternatively, there's Meebo:

Hopefully, GMail's integrated it lightly into Gmail, as Meebo can be a bit of a system whore at times.

Nice they added a sign out option for gtalk in gmail. I hated that thing because I use the desktop client and it would sometimes get my messages instead of the desktop client and I wouldn't notice.

Looks like this will only be visible in FireFox 2 and Internets Exploder 7 - I don't see this (or the other newer gmail features) in IE 6.

Attached my AIM MSN and Y! lists to my gmail account with a Jabber program a while back, and have already been enjoying this for nearly a year :p

^for the tutorial. You basically end up with big nasty (but renamable) names, but that doesn't matter, cause the chat is still lightning fast even though it's being redirected like 7 times :p

It's nice for school computers, where all programs and ports are blocked...a big help :)

I think I might stay logged in like that forever, just because the window and chat management are superb. It takes getting used to, but it's pretty slick....nice job :D
