In a Reuters story about the end of “third party exclusives,” one of the producers of Metal Gear Solid 4 said the game must “sell one million copies on day one in order for the studio to break even. Given that there are only 2 million PS3 sold in the U.S., that could be a daunting task.

"We're telling our fans that if you want to play 'Metal Gear Solid 4', you have to buy a PS3," said Ryan Payton, the assistant producer of the game. "The PlayStation brand has always been good to us, and we're pretty bullish on the PS3."

With any luck, the rest of the planet will pick up the slack...but damn, a million on day ONE to break even?!?!

Maybe I'm missing something here, why does it matter if they sell that million on the first day or first week, they'll still break even...

On the front page it should read MGS4 not MSG4

I was just about to mention that, but i thought it was the acronym for the game, I've seen other people type MSG4 with myself having no clue to it's relation to metal gear solid 4....conspiracy!!

Clever of him to use the word "bullish". While it could definitely mean they're confident in the PS3; based on pesimistic "have to sell 1 million units on the first day", I think by "bullish" he means bullheaded, or stubborn for throwing all their eggs in Sony's basket.

Really, who says "we have to sell one million on the first day just to break even" with any sort of enthusiasm.

Why do they have to break open on the first day? I doubt many games do that at all.

I think its Konami's polite but secretive way of saying unless a PS3 game can sell 1m on day 1, they will be porting it to 360. Pure speculation on my part but Id love to see that (I dont like MGS at all myself but I love to see Sony get ****ed as much as possible, nothing but hatred towards them :p)

think crysis has even came close to breaking even.? its not even on the xfire's list of top 10 played games.Im assuming no ones purchased it.

Why do you hate Sony so much? Sony's PS3 is booming in Japan where sales are ~50000 in a month while the 360 only has about 5000 a month. It even beats Wii sales. And Sony's PS2 is still kicking around, along with Sony's PSP which owned up the DS in sales over the past few weeks/months.
Sony's camera lineup is getting more attention, and the list goes on and on.
What are you complaining about?! I have both a PS3 and a 360. I play on my 360 so don't call me a fanboy or something..

I like Sony products, their cameras are dang good and the original Playstation and PS2 were great

This Konami's nice way of issuing a final warning to Sony. What the have basically said is "all right, you told us to trust you, and we put all our eggs in your basket, so you had BETTER deliver, or you can kiss us goodbye." ;) Quite frankly, I'd be worried about my game sales too if I knew that my game's platform was as small as the PS3's is.

yea thats pretty much it
and regardless of what Konami USA thinks its Kogema that will have the last word on when it ships and on what system
rumor is atm if Sony cant start selling more PS3s soon it wont be PS3 only for long
Kogima already pushed it back a year becouse of this shitty sales of the PS3

Only becouse Nintendo is running out of people to sell to
just wait for the new color Wiis and DS sales will pick up again
mean wile sony has stock piles of PS3 and Nintendo cant make Wiis fast enough
also Sony takes a loss on ever PS3 were the Wii prints money

its hard for the psp to not outsell the ds in japan when EVERYBODY over there has a ds already :p

Sony makes money indirectly by:
licenses, controllers, accessories, development fees, etc.
The PS3 directly is being sold at a loss (Blu-ray + Cell for $399? Wow).

No, they are playing the single player like me...... lot to go though. :p

There are many long winded reasons I hate Sony, and Ill admit my hatred is further than that of a normal Sony hater. My original issue stems from Sony hyping the PS2 so much that it effectively killed the Dreamcast before the PS2 launched. The DC's launch games today look better than 80% of 2006s PS2 games. The DC was the first with online play also, and progressive scan, which looked amazing. And the games usually played so well with great framerate and controls. But Sony used their massive bank accounts on advertising hype and ad placement and forcing devs to make only PS2 games that the DC was forced out. If you don't believe me about the DCs strength, look at the first couple month's sales figures. I still rather play my DC than my PS2 anyday of the week. Innovation and gameplay > overhyped graphics that didn't deliver at all.

Thats just where my anti-Sony nature began. Many other incidents after that (that was 99/2000) have led to my hatred today. Ill admit their cameras are good in the low end market (meaning under DSLR) except for MSPDuo BS and they make good TVs but their TV prices are retarded. And yes I said I own a PS2, but Its only for the 2 games I have for it, GT4 and Katamari (long before Forza 1 and Katamari 360 came out).

Back to the topic at hand:

Sony is likely to lose this exclusivity and Im happy even though Ill never buy MGS :)

a quick google shows Halo3, a similar exclusive, sold around 2.8M on day one, or $170,000,000.00 roughly

what....1/6th roughly of the consoles out there sold....

i think it would be hard for a game to sell at a 50% game to console rate....on day one

for those wondering, for games and movies alike, opening day is always the biggest day, so when they say they have to sell that many on day one, they are saying historically, if it doesn't, it likely wont sell enough going forward to break even....thats my take on it anyways

honestly, it doesnt look good for MGS4 because it's not a game like Halo that you can mention to nearly anyone that they will recognize, MGS4 is a more niche group of people IMO

I own a PS3 but I will wait and see if MGS will come out on 360, because I'd rather have it on the 360.

crysis is not an online game, and most people that use xfire play online games like cod4, which is why it isn't on top 10 played games.

1up has had it on top 10 for a very long time.

Maybe I'm missing something here, why does it matter if they sell that million on the first day or first week, they'll still break even...

With a high profile sequel they can fairly accurately predict the sales curve based on how well it does opening day. First day sales are the highest, and then it quickly tapers off. They probably need more than a million sales to break even, but they've predicted if the get a million on the first day that they'll make their break even point.

Come on – you guys have seen the production values on the previous MGS games, right? I can't think of a better example of a series that is actually WORTH the $. They're polished all the way through.

Sony execs said this, Sony execs said that...Sony is SO evil. I'm sick of hearing people bash Sony just because some people in their company say stupid things. The PS3 is a good product with a lack of games. This will (hopefully) change as the price continues dropping on the base system...

Nintendo used similar business tactics back in the day of the original NES. They sold inferior products (ie original gameboy versus sega game gear) and dominated the market through the same advertising tactics. Sega had a color backlit handheld way before Nintendo released anything into the market. Maybe you do not remember because you were too young or not even alive. Go do some research and stop being such a fanboy.

Excellent... is MGS goes to the 360 then there's no reason left for me to buy a PS3. Ratchet & Clank is close, but oh well. I'm not buying a console for one game... or even two, unless one is Metal Gear.

I love the Metal Gear series. Some of my fondest memories I have of gameing was the awe I had when I played the MGS demo for the first time...it was amazement.

Unfortunitly, I will never own a PS3. Heres hoping it gets ported to the 360.

What exactly is a corporation if its not its executives, then?

If the janitor is saying stupid shit, understandable... The CxO's are saying stupid shit... They embody the corporation.

The only game that can pull off 1 mil in one day is Halo 3... and maybe WoW (expansion).

Nintendo used ads for their games that were actually good though. Inferior products? (I do remember the whole GB/GG and SNES/Gen wars) The Game Gear had better graphics but you know why it failed to sell anywhere as good as GB (the GG had some great games too)? It was the lack of usability. People want something to can use. By this I mean it took 6 batteries and gave very short battery life, I know I hated changing batts all the time. I liked my Gameboy's extra long battery life (for the time).

As for "Sony Said" stuff, thats another I dislike them very much. Most of their execs, ESPECIALLY Ken Kutagari have their heads in their asses. He claimed people would find it to be a bargain, would buy more than 1 for their homes and would work extra hours to pay for it.

As for a fan boy, I equally love Nintendo and Microsoft and I loved Sega when they were a hardware company. Hell, I even liked Sony during the PS1 era.

I "hate" Sony because they are arrogant, and think they can charge extra because of their brand name. You refer to how PS3s sell in Japan... and I can't help but say: Of Course! The Japanese are going to support Sony, because they see it as a Japanese company, and their society as a whole values "cultural solidarity". I also hold allot of resentment towards Sony for their attitude towards consumers. A case in point might be the way they had music CDs install covert software. But the way they ruined Star Wars Galaxies, and treated paying customers in a completely insulting manner, is what bothers me the most. Indeed I've never been treated the way I have by Sony's representatives by ANY other company.

Now mind you I did buy a Playstation when they first came out. And I also bought a PS2, which I almost never played. The reason is that I didn't have the people to play with, and I've grown accustomed to playing "online". So now I have an Xbox 360, and I'm not remotely interested in a PS3. The biggest factor here is Xbox Live.

I'll give you an example: I've been playing "Mass Effect" obsessively lately. And even though it's not a co-op game, I still connect with friends and chat while I play. If I got a PS3 to play MGS4, I'd have to resort back to burning up my cell phone minutes... No, on second thought, I'll just pass on MGS4 and stick with the Xbox 360, and my PC. And while I don't wish Konami any ill, they chose to make this an "exclusive". So all I can say is "good luck" with trying to sell a million copies on day 1. (The truth is that I'm having too much fun with Mass Effect atm to care ...)

you speak the truth, nintendo used to be a terrible company "ethics" wise (does any company have ethics? :p) Anyways, now it seems like nintendo is the good little company that cares about the gamer and can do no wrong.

I too hate sony for the same reason, the dc was amazing and the first system I had that was truly mine and I could keep in my room. Omg I fell in love with it.

There's loads of games that have sold absolute truckloads on their opening weekends. It's just Microsoft make such a big deal about it because it's their only platform exclusive smash. (PGR included)

MGS was hyped to shit on PSOne so probably did.
GTA Vice City had a ridiculous opening weekend.
If Gran Turismo hasn't I'd be amazed.
Final Fantasy VII probably did, just in Japan.
Super Mario World for SNES?

I'm one of those gamers with no allegiance, pretty much if they have great games i'll go for them.

If you actually are blind and naive enough to think any of the big three don't do any shady business then you should crawl out of that basement once in awhile and smell the roses. You can easily find many current news articles about any of them that won't exactly make your day
