Hello everyone , i'm building a new pc since my old p4 3ghz isnt cutting it anymore. its been exactly 4 yrs and 4 months since i build that pc and its time for a new pc.

Currently i bought

1. XFX PVT88PYDD4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB Alpha Dog Edition 670/1950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150254

Total for this was $471.55

Next i need a Hard drive , Psu , Ram , Mobo , Cpu , Gpu and Cpu Heatsinks.

Hard Drive - HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721075KLA330 (0A35154) 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $184.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145166

Gpu Heatsink - Thermalright Gt Vga Cooler - $49.99

The Total For these parts is $1418.13 ( shipping and tax included )

My budget is $1,500 - 1600 max

Im going to order them from zipzoomfly because its a bit cheaper and i live in california and i dont want to pay the tax ^_^.

I already have a XFI Gamer soundcard so i dont need a new one.

Im gonna be ocing the cpu to hopefully around 3ghz if it runs stable.

Im mainly going to be using the pc for Gaming , Video and Sound encoding and browsing / daily uses. I usually leave my pc running for 24/7 and restart it once a month.

Do you guys think this is fine or can anyone suggest something better in my price range in mind .

I really need some help on some of these parts , what do you guys think so far ? , if you guys have suggestions on other parts or upgrades let me know plz :) thanks

The Monitor i currently have is a Westinghouse L2410NM ( Dvi - Hdmi Cable )

Umm, zipzoomfly.com does charge tax for CA residents. They are based here in Cali after all.

You really should list which parts you're getting from ZZF.com instead of newegg links.

Anyway, ditch the Zalman cooler. There are much better HSF for around that price:
Scythe SCNJ-1100P Ninja HSF - $36
Tuniq Tower 120 HSF - $45
Thermalright Ultima-90 HSF - $46 & Panaflo FBA09A12M 92mm Fan - $3

You don't need high performance RAM for overclocking the Q6600. Any cheap pair of DDR2 800 RAM is all that you need. Here's why:

Q6600:
Multi x FSB, RAM Speed = Clock Speed
9 x 266Mhz, DDR2 533 RAM = 2.4Ghz <== Stock Speeds
9 x 333Mhz, DDR2 667 RAM = 3.0Ghz <== Good OC
9 x 400Mhz, DDR2 800 RAM = 3.6Ghz <== Excellent OC

So I recommend this set of RAM:
G.SKILL F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 RAM - $55

And since you're overclocking, get the G0 stepping of the Q6600 instead. The G0 stepping runs cooler and can OC higher than the B3 stepping they have at newegg. Here's where you can get the G0 stepping:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping CPU - $274

And this is just a minor nitpick but personally I wouldn't get a 750GB drive. For the same price as that 750GB drive, you can get a 500GB and 320GB drive which gives you 820GB of storage. For $15 to $25 more, you can get two 500GB drives and get 1TB of storage. Though if you don't want the slightly minor hassle of having your files spread over two drives, then go for the 750GB drive.

Yeah, What he ^ said. :D

I got my Q6600 G0 at ClubIT and it's running @3ghz on stock voltages and my temps are between 40C and 44C and I didn't even get as good of a cooler combo as Danny suggested. ;)

sweet thanks ill definetly get the Q6600 G0 then , as for the memory im thinking of getting 4gigs you think its worth it or stick with 2 gigs ? also my friend has that exact same ram he told me its not good for ocing much , hes having problems with his and is returning it , are you sure that ram is worth it ?

also im most likely gonna be running vista 64bit on this system.

I say get 4GB of RAM since RAM is pretty cheap these days and you're using Vista 64bit.
G.SKILL F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - $115

Yes the G.Skill RAM isn't good for OCing much. But as I showed earlier in my example, if you keep the FSB:RAM at a 1:1 ratio, you don't need to OC the RAM at all with the Q6600 since it's running at its rated speed. No, you won't see a major benefit in games or apps that's worth having a faster FSB with lower multiplier, involving overclocking of the RAM and generally stressing the system even more.

Though if you want to see for yourself if what I said about having a faster FSB having a worthy and beneficial performance increase in apps and games, then get the Buffalo Firestix instead. The Buffalo Firestix has Micron D9 chips that makes them excellent overclockers:
Buffalo Firestix FSX800D2C-K2G 2 x 1Gb DDR2 800 RAM - $70

If you're not sure at all about whatever I'm talking about, go ahead and ask.

lol nuts i wish i kept up with all the new pc changes , i sorta slacked off for 4 yrs :p , im way behind lol.

basically i need something that would oc well and be stable for games / video encoding , while being stable . As i mentioned i dont restart my pc often so im hoping i wont have any problems.

as for the heatsink for the cpu do you think its better to get the thermalright one or the tuniq one ?

Was looking at this http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3068&p=6

Also my current P4 cpu heatsink / fan are hella loud , i cant sleep at nights sometime , i can hear it a few rooms away even , its freaking loud !! i hope none of these new cpu heatsinks are that loud. as for watercooling my last system was watercooled and the pump died 2 times , guess i should have gotten a switech one, but this time i want to try air cooling. the only good thing about the current p4 pc is , i dont need to turn on the heater to keep my house warm in winter , this thing makes my house into an oven.

Btw thanks for your help so far :)

I say go for the Ultima 90. It's smaller yet performs about the same as the Tuniq Tower. And no, none of the HSF I've recommended are loud. Then again, quiet and loud are very subjective. I personally found the stock C2D HSF very quiet. However, some people have called it loud though.

And no prob. I happen to enjoy doing this. It also helps me keeps up to date on things.

Not much to add, Danny too care of it :D

Only comment would be to look at the Seagate harddrives as they might give you a little better performance that the Hitachis, not sure that is still the case though.

so which hard drive do you rec. then ? i need 500gigs minimum max 750 gigs. ( video editing requires alot of space ) my current hd's are a 320gig and 250 gig sata 150 western digital hd , the 250 is running perfectly still as for the 320 its working but something got messed up , so im backing up all my data and im going to format it.

the hitachi caught my eye because of the 32mb cache\

as for the ram im going to take your advice and get the G.SKILL F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM , best bang for my buck :D

If you checked the review that you yourself posted, you can see that the Ultra 120 Extreme cools better than the Ultima 90.

As for 500GB hard drive recommendations:
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $105
SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $107
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $110

- The Samsung drive is the the most quieter of the two hard drives. Pretty decent performance. Comes with 3 warranty.
- The Seagate drive is faster and comes with a 5 year warranty. But it's a slightly louder hard drive.
- The Western Digital drive is about the average of the Seagate and Samsung drives. Comes with a 3 year warranty.

heh yea i saw that and edited my post before u posted :p , i think ill stick with the ultima since its smaller , im afraid it might not fit on the mobo im getting , dont want to order it and in the end not fit.

K so far im getting all of the ones listed on top

Replacing the ram with the 2x2gig gskill one and the new cpu heatsink for the thermalright one. Also ill replace the Hd for one of those 500gig ones since its cheaper and dont want to pass my budget.

As for the psu u think i should get the 520 W version of the corsair or the 620W ?? , ive heard the 520 runs hotter thou and im probably not gonna sli since the thermalright Gt heatsink is freaking huge and is taking up a few slots.

The 520HX is more than enough power for you system. Though if you want a bit more headroom for future upgrades or more hard drives, the get the 620HX.

Oh and just stumbled on this pretty good deal for a 750Gb drive for $157. Might want to consider it. Though if you want to save some money, then any of the 500GB drives will do:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10005580

oh wow thats a good deal :p , thanks i think ill get that lol. now all i need is 4 , 120m fans , i need one that pushes alot of air and is quiet , ill be using 1 for the vid card gpu mounted on the thermalright Gt , 2 for the case and 1 for the cpu heatsink, have any suggestions ??.

Do you think that the Thermalright Ultra Extreme would fit on that asus mobo btw ?? i want it mounted so it can push the air toward the back of the case . other then that i think i have everything i need , thanks for all your help in answering all my questions :)

It should fit all right. If it could fit on GA-P35-DS4 mobo, then it should fit all right on that Asus mobo.

Danny saved a lot of people so much typing... Thanks Danny! :p

The Ultra120extreme will fit on the board you want.

sweet thanks :) , btw did you guys lap the thermalright extreme heatsink ?? , since i saw alot of people saying its not fully flat .

If I was still in college and didn't value my time as much as I do now, then I'd lap my Tuniq. However, I get good enough temps without lapping it, and I just think it takes too long to lap a HS, lol. Its all up to you, though.

Yeah, thats what happens you're slightly of an insomniac. Too much free time :D
