POST your Xbox360 Red LIghts of Death story

Got my new 360 yesterday. MFG is 8/27/07! Has HDMI, got 2 year product replacement plan from Best buy, plus 3 YR RROD Warranty from M$, and 1 year regular Warranty from M$. It locked up once after being on for like 7 hours.

Do you mean lock-up as in freeze? Or lock-up as in RROD?

Specifically the upper left, lower left, and lower right quadrants lighting up while the power brick light is green is the 3 RROD error that has all the buzz. There are many other less common errors.

*sigh* My 360 RRoD 2 days ago just as I loaded up Ace Combat 6, now I am waiting for MS to send a box. Hopefully I will get it back around the time Mass Effect comes out. Darn you MS...

after reading all these rrod stories from here and virtually every other game oriented forum i visit, i've decided to skip buying a 360 and instead invest a bit more money into upgrading my computer early some time next year. one of the few positive for consoles for me is how reliable they are compared to PCs (at least for me) and that isn't the case with the big red ring box.

my 2nd RROD hit today.
Whatever I get back will most likely be sold. Most likely here.
I

No RROD per se here, but my 360 would lock up after ~45 minutes of game play on a consistent basis. It was out in an open space with none of the air vents blocked.

I beat Oblivion then sent it back on the extended warranty I had bought, spent the check they sent me on a PS3. Previously the same thing happened to my XBOX1 so I was not happy and decided never to buy another MS console.

It was a freeze, anyways the freezing got so bad games were unplayable. So I returned it, and bought an Elite. Have had it since 1 of Nov, and is working fine no lock ups what so ever. Been on overnight, longest was on, was 2 days.

I have an original launch 360 and it has worked flawlessly until this past weekend......funny thing is that I just bought a Halo 3 system a few weeks ago and had transferred everything to it already!

My biggest gripe is that I had just purchased another XBOX 360 holiday bundle this weekend to send to my nephew for X-mas. I had the idea to setup all three and try out the multiscreen display in Forza2 and load up a bunch of my cars on his XBOX. Of course this is when my Launch XBOX finally decides to RROD - denying me the chance to play 3-screen Forza2!!!!

Not to be denied - I did the towel trick to get it working temporarily and did get to play some Forza2 on a triple screen setup - VERY COOL!

I think if my X360 RROD on me and it was out of warranty, I would say hell with this, and Frisbee this bitch into the ocean. Seriously, "repairs" for $100... yea right. More like $100 that will never go towards that shit again, Wii here I come :)

Some of you guys are just glutton for punishment!! I'd ditch the POS on the second time, but what suprises me most are those that keep buying console after console, even after seeing the hilariously ironic demise of the demo booth machines!!

This thread is reason why I'd go nowhere near one. I was starting to get tempted with an Elite but fuck that, no chance now......

Well when 360 is where the games are, what can you do? A lot of people were in the same situation with the PS2.

The RROD is one reason I'm not a 360 owner yet. It's so tempting right now, but I don't want to deal with having to send a console in because of faulty hardware (especially because it doesnt seem to matter how long you own it, it may RROD at anytime). My ps2 is junk, but it's still running after like 6 years somehow. I know a 360 won't be doing the same.

I think we are riding in the same boat. Untill M$ can fix their shit, I'm not getting one. MY DC get used as much as any of my current consoles, as well as tons of usage since it came out... and its still chuggen along. It also has moving parts...

Always loved DC.

I'll tell ya if MS put some DC games in the Arcade i'd prolly have a 360 RROD or not.

I was at futureshop today (equivalent to bestbuy) and noticed the RROD on their live xbox360 sample. It was funny and shitty because there were kids who wanted to test the xbox360.

oh man thats futureshop in a nut shell.

I always like the sony provided 1080p "showcase" setup. they've got a 1080p tv running on the blue ray player... and the blu ray copy of 300 they've got running on a blu-ray player...

you would asume the TV would look astounding with 1080p goodness right? wrong... dumbass's decided to use a composite cable...

crap like that. Thats whuchi get for hiring an $8/hr to setup your $8,000 worth of equipment.

I can totally see some pimply kid hooking up a 360, seeing the red rings and saying in his cracked voice "is it sposed to do that? oh well its plugged in."

I bought my 360 the first week of July 06 to celebrate landing a new job. In November, half way through gears of war the game locks up. I reboot the console - RRoD. Send it in, get a replacement about 4 weeks later. The replacement runs fine until May when it locks up while playing a movie (don't remember which movie). I replace this one, and it runs fine until the final flood level in Halo 3 (which would be around Sept 28th). Game locks up, I reboot RRoD. The console is now sitting on my coffee table. It's spot at the top of my entertainment center has been taken by a shiny new(to me) PS3.

I have no intention of ever owning an xbox360 again.

yeah I'd start setting out letter bombs...

You know its the outsourced tech support that does it for me... They move the staff to india, not because its cheaper, but because if it was somewhere in continental north america I'd grab the 22 and jump in the car and go for a road trip!

as of 9:05AM EST, MS has my 360 :p

Heheh the futureshop near me has two 360 demos... the one fancy kiosk, and one in a metal box... the one in the metal box has a dead DVD drive, and the kiosk had already been replaced once :p

Was playing Gears of War, girlfriend walked by, bumped into the opposite end of the entertainment center by accident (and it was a very light bump!), game freezes, reboot, RROD!

Get a replacement system from MS, this one is dirty as hell and it already started to freeze, so I sold it to Gamestop, who never bothered to test it.

I loved the system, I wanted to wait until better versions came out, and the Falcon seems like it's pretty stable and the best version yet, so I got one of those last Friday with Forza 2 and Marvel. It's been played for about 5 hours or so a day between my gf and I, no lockups, no nothing.

And yea, to the guy who said it's where the games are, he's got that right. Mass Effect was worth it, imo.

Why the rolleyes? I totally agree with the guy. Same situation with the PS2. The PS2 had all the good games, so gamers had no choice but to deal with malfunctioning consoles if they wanted to buy good games.

Same shit, different toilet...

Does the new version of 360 also have quieter optical drives? I'm really not a fan of all the noise the system makes when a disc is running, it's like a mini vacuum.

Having a working console is the most important. I can find good games on any platform anyway. Most all good 360 games are on PS2/PS3 IMO, and the difference is too minor to make a fuss over. One reason I didn't support my original Xbox much was because it gave me lots of problems. My PS2 was flawless and never had an issue (have an early PS2 too). My 360 gave me a RRoD after it froze on DoA4 and RR6. It started working again, but eventually gave me a RRoD that wouldn't stop, so I had to get another one. My newer 360 hasn't given me a RRoD, but it has occasional issues. I rarely play my 360 anyway, so that may help (I mostly just play my PS3). One reason I bought my PS3 sooner than expected was because of the 360 dying on me, and I learned once again I cannot trust a MS product. If my 360 dies two more times, it's out of my possession asap.

I have a 1st gen ps2 and never had a problem and a newer one (still the big original) and never had a problem...

I will accept it as your own experience and that you've made your own choices based on your experience. Just as an example, my PS2 died within a short time, as to where my original Xbox still works fine to this day.

I guess it's just the personal experience that counts, eh?

Anyways, in the end it's all our personal decision and I guess we've got no choice but to deal with it.:)

Well, I just joined the club. I played on Sunday night for a while, shut the console off, no problems. I went to play on Tuesday, and RROD :(

I have a question though, are they actually going to ask for "bona-fide" proof of purchase like they claim on the website? I'm fairly certain I don't still have the receipt, so I'm just curious.

It's funny, I've never really worried about a machine failing on me as long as it's covered by the manufacturer / retailer. Enough things to be concerned about in life without letting that bother me. :D

My console just died. This is my 2nd one that dies, here's the story as posted in another forum:

Time for a new 360 I guess.

I was playing RockBand last night, and the game froze. So I thought no big deal, I'll just reboot it. Afterwards it powered on, but it gets stuck in the 360 logo; It won't make it to the dashboard for some reason, no red lights, nothing. It just won't get to the dash at all, no matter how long I wait...

I assume possibly that somehow RockBand killed it, since it seems like some sort of software issue (since no RROD.... yet) I left it on this morning on my way to work, we'll see if it RROD's by the time I get home, otherwise to MS it is...

POS, what a ****ing POS... Yet, I have so much fun with it that it's worth going trough the hassle of a new one, yet it still sucks balls. Cya in a few weeks RockBand. (at least it didn't die during Halo3)

ive got mine back, turnaround time was 8 days from the time i ordered my second box (first never showed up... poopie :( )

Well when 360 is where the games are, what can you do? A lot of people were in the same situation with the PS2.

I still have my launch PS2 and it is still fully functional although it hasn't been used since the PS3 came out but is still hooked up to my old T.V. I picked up a 360 this morning but have yet to open it because it was more of an impulse buy and after reading this thread I am thinking I should have bought it with an extended warranty plan.

RROD is covered for 3 years anyway :) pretty much anything else will happen before the regular one year is up if it doesnt RROD first.

Yeah but I don't like the downtime in between, I just want to take it back to the store and get a new one. Also finals are coming up and I don't think my GPA needs any more abuse (gets enough from my ps3). I REALLY want to play Mass Effect though.

not exactly a RROD story but, my 5 month old elite just stopped reading discs tonight with a loud grinding noise followed by "please insert this disc into an xbox360" message onscreen. off to microsoft we go! woo! (had a launch console RROD before i got the elite, so this is number 2).

Wow, just wow, my original 360 died at 11 months of age with minimal usage in Oct, took a month to get my replacement, and the new replacement worked for 2 weeks and just died again 2 mins ago. Wow, just wow, great job MS, if it's not for all the great games I sure as hell wouldn't be putting up with this ish.

December 2005 - April 2006: 360 #1. Turned it on one day and got the RROD.

April 2006 - October 2007: 360 #2. It would work and then freeze. I could restart and it would be fine or give me the RROD. It took 2.5 weeks until it permanently gave me the RROD and then I called it in.

October 2007 - forever (I can only hope): 360 #3

I'll raise hell if I get the RROD outside of the 3 year warranty and they won't replace it for free. None of my 360's have lasted that long.

Just woke up one morning and wanted to start off my day playing CoD4.

Booted up my 360, bam RROD.. it was working absolutely fine the previous night. My 360 lasted just over a year, not bad. Oh well, still, my RROD was pretty unexplainable. No freeze or anything, just turned it on one morning and it was broke.

Imagine if you had a new car with a 1 in 3 failure rate.

My 360 RRoD last night. I cried out a long, "Nooooooooooooooooooo!" My housemates thought I was crazy. Damn. :( It won't RRoD anymore but it will freeze and lock up now. Poo.

Well girls and boys I was going to start a new thread about how MS can suck a dick but I noticed how active this one was so........drum roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 4th died last night, I was playing CoD4 online last night and all of a sudden I ask my wife what the hell was that noise because I usually have my shit turned up pretty loud and I thought some one just farted in their mic or sumpthin' but it was my dvd drive sounding like it was chewing up pencils and several minutes later my drive wouldn't read my CoD4 disc but luckily it didn't scratch the disc.

Well MS you did infact beat Sony out of the gate by a year with your next gen console,
but was it worth fucking over so many consumers in the process.

You have to be kidding me. Not bad? More like that's a joke. Seriously, 1 year is nothing to be proud about. My NES, Genesis, N64, DreamCast and GameCube are pointing fingers and laughing, beacause they are all still working.

I went to Wal Mart. Bought a brand new 360.

Took it out of the box.

Plugged it in.

RROD.

4 weeks later I had a new one from UPS.

:)
