Hey guys,
Well i was thinking about getting the dell 1720 laptop and i liked the fact it could support a 1900x1200 resolution but the best card i could get would be the 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. I was wondering what your guys thoughts were on this card? I believe its DX10 but would it actually run any DX10 games? I would also pair it with 2-3gb of ram and a 2.0+ core 2 duo. Could it handle BF2 or BF2142? I know you guys are much more knowledgeable about this than myself so im up for any suggestions! Thanks

even though it may support DX10 I doubt you could get a decent framerate out of it, 128mb of memory is going to get eaten up pretty quick, My advice to you would be to skip it, and atleast try to get a 8800 or 8600.. one thing I learned along time ago building computers man, dont go cheap, you really do get what you pay for.

I was able to run BF2142 on my laptop with an ATI X1400 mobility card. It did not run super well, but it was playable. Your 8600 should be at least slightly better.

Don't expect to run DX10 games at all (or at least, not with DX10 effects).

Get a lower resolution then 1920x1200 if you can. The 8600m won't be playing much at that resolution. Well unless you need the extra desktop space.

Oh, I didn't see that. Yea, no chance in HELL the card will support games at that resolution. That is an insane resolution for a laptop anyways. Icons would be the size of a pinky nail.

Well the only reason i wanted a resolution that large was for later getting a 24"lcd at put that at home and browse on that. But it only has RGB inputs not DVI on the side of the laptop so doesnt that kind of throw it out the window?

The laptop resolution has nothing to do with the resolution of an external monitor. You can use any external monitor with any laptop.

But if you want to game, a laptop is NOT going to do it "well" especially with new games.
