I haven't seen any performance numbers on the new gts thats coming out next month, so I don't know how much better it will be than the gt. But if it is better, will the price/performance be better than the gt?

If you're lacking a card right now you could go eVGA and step-up. :D

No guarantee it will come out in 90 days though.

yeah most deff. im going with evga so I can do the step up. But I mean I can wait till early Dec. if the gts will have better performance than the gt. If not i'll just go with the gt.

Well being that the prices are far to high, you might as well wait.

You know nVidia is gonna release the GTS earlier than planned anyway now that ATi proved there are other fish in the sea. I dont think it will be long. I'm waiting myself and you should too. Buyers remorse sux. Hedge your bets and make your play when all the cards are on the table. Video cards are about the last things anyone needs to rush out and purchase... afterall, if you're posting to the forums, its not like you're w/o one ATM ;)

What do you mean - earlier? earlier than 3rd Dec?

yeah, i read about that date after i posted that. great news to me! I was unaware b4...
with the short supply of 8800GT's and their popularity, i feared nVidia would possibly hold off on supplying retailers with the GTS.

lets just hope thats not a paper date.

I can't decide what to do video card wise either. All I really play is WoW so I don't need much, but I'm hoping to the the orange box for xmas so I'd like to run that as best as possible. I think I'm just going to get an 8800GT but I don't want to buy it now and then have the price drop a bunch when the new nvidia card comes out. Sometimes buying parts is such a pain.

Try and snag one from your local Best Buy. 270 with tax included, and you can return it up until Jan 31 08 so you can get it cheaper online up until then or get the newest part if its released.

PS: E2 is sweet.

I just got a Best Buy coupon for 10% off so that makes the price even better. I think I'll just buy it there and do the price protection thing if they lower the price.

I mainly want the orange box for TF2 but I'm looking forward to playing through E1 and E2 too.

Thanks for the kick in the butt I needed.

I'm waiting for the GTS.

I could be surprised, but do people really think the new GTS is going to be appreciably better than the new GT that's out, especially if we take into account overclocking and costs?

I gladly forked out (overpaid) $600 for a pair of EVGA 8800GT's knowing that I would be stepping up. Although the performance of these cards is amazing.

Does anybody know what EVGA does with the cards they get back from step-ups?

Will EVGA give you the full amount you paid toward the step up even if you paid over MSRP? E.g. you pay $300 when MSRP is $250 - will EVGA give you $300 credit on the next one?

ohh thats a good question. I would like to know the answer to this also!

They'll only refund the MSRP, and they'll only refund one card per household (of the same card model), if I'm not mistaken (and I admit sometimes I am)

Hmmm...I might have to call and ask.

Update: Just browsed the stup up FAQ on their web site:

Q: How much is Step-Up?
A: The Step-Up™ Program is free; you are required to pay the difference between your original invoice price, less any applicable rebates, and the price of the new card, plus any applicable tax and shipping.

So it sounds like everyone that paid over MSRP for the GT will get that full amount on the step up.

Your purchase price will be reduced by the amount equal to the original purchase price of the graphics card that you are trading in. Because this value is initially entered by you, it will be subject for review by EVGA

Participants in the EVGA Step-up™ Program are welcome to use the program one (1) time per new card purchase.

Seems okay to me. I'm not too worried about it either way. These GT's are the bomb and worth every penny of the $300 they cost me.

So I was half-right, and yes, I think you made a good purchase, but I wouldn't go any higher than that myself.

They give you your full invoice price in the step up. If you paid $400 for a 8800GT, they'll give you $400 in credit.

It's a one time deal for EACH card purchased. If you purchased 10 cards, you can step-up each card once.

Once you use the step-up, you can't step-up again on the new card.

If for some reason you RMA'd the card, it no longers qualifies for a step-up.

I'm in the same boat since I've still got my 7950GT. I'm doing my best to hold out though...

Really? I read through he step-up policy and the way I interpreted was this. You pay $400 for your GT at AcmePC.com. Then EVGA looks at your invoice and says, whoah we are only charging $279 for the same card, so we're going to give you a $279 credit. I hope what you said is true. Perhaps it's in the hands of the EVGA Rep who handles your step-up.

A couple posts up I quoted a page from the step up FAQ:

"you are required to pay the difference between your original invoice price"

They keyword there being "your" invoice price....not the price on the EVGA site.

Yeah I saw that. This is what concerned me in the Step-Up Terms and Conditions ....

Your purchase price will be reduced by the amount equal to the original purchase price of the graphics card that you are trading in. Because this value is initially entered by you, it will be subject for review by EVGA - who may elect to add or remove additional charges based on the accuracy of the original application. Also, the Step-up™ upgrade cannot be used with any other offers or promotions.

I interpreted this as meaning they may or may not honor the cost of the card if it was way over the MSRP. After re-reading it though, it looks like it's just there to prevent people from lying and saying they paid $600 for their card and trying to put one over on them without an Invoice. So it looks like you guys were absoulutely right. I plan on Stepping Up myself so that's great.

It is YOUR INVOICE price from an approved vender (newegg, zipzoomfly, best buy, etc.).

BTW, if you step-up to a lower priced msrp card, you do NOT get the difference refunded to you. You'll just pay shipping.

Your invoice price, $400. The card you want to step-up has an msrp of $300. You just pay for shipping. They do NOT send you a check out for the $100 difference.

If the card you want is MORE, then you pay shipping PLUS the difference.

It has to be from an approved vendor, AND you have to fax or upload your invoice to them. They will review it. It may be hard getting them to step-up if you bought your card off eBay.

tukson, in my follow-up post I used an approved vendor as an example. Zipzoomfly - $379, EVGA - $289 for the same card. Anyway this really doesn't matter. In the other post you quoted, I already explained my cause for concern, and realized that my concerns were unfounded. Thanks for clarifying and no offense intended.

Oh, no offense taken. :)

Yeah, eVGA rocks with their step-up. I've used both step-up and RMA and found them wonderful to work with.

Same here! I did a step up last year (one of the 8 or so EVGA cards I've bought), and my first RMA a few weeks ago. I'll keep going back to EVGA even if it means a little more $.

So the original question was never answered. Any ideas on the specs of the 8800GTS (92)???

You're kidding. This is what Techpowerup has .....

8800 GTS G92: 128 enabled stream processors / 650MHz core / Shaders at 1625MHz / 512MB memory at 1940MHz and will be nine inches long. Its official release date is said to be December 3rd, with a price tag somewhere between $299 and $349.

If the upcoming release date of November 3rd is true, I would wait and see. Hopefully they will be available in adequate numbers and not $100 over the MSRP.

There is also a 3 page long thread just rolling along already with specs and more ..... http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1241794

The new GTS will beat the GT and probably match the current GTX, BUT once all the dust settles there is a price difference. The GT is current selling above its RRP due to demand.

Prices will be

GT = $230-250
GTS(New) = $300-330.

These cards are supposed to be and will be in different price brackets, so the answer depends on what you want to spend. The only catch is the new GTS will prob come in at the inflated GT price, but the GT may drop fast depending on supply of both cards.

Well I'm waiting for the GTX to come out?

PATIENTLY:D

I keep hearing people say they will wait for the g92 GTX revision to come out because it's likely it will get an upgrade because the other cards did. I'm a bit skeptical about this because as of now, the GT is supposed to be the alternative for the now old GTS and the "new" GTS is supposed to be the alternative for the now old GTX, so by following that pattern, you should expect a revised g92 GTX card as a new flagship card because the "old" GTX was pretty much a top card and I don't see them making a revised Ultra being that they're practically the same.

This theory doesn't sound right because if the new GTS does beat the GTX(in terms of benchmarks, power, tec), that will be the top card so theres no reason to make a revised GTX, right? Also I've heard that with the g92 chip (correct me if I'm wrong please), they are capped at 128sp so basically the new GTS is the best they can do with the g92 chip. Maybe minor improvements but you wouldn't see a big difference gap between a g92 GTS and a g92 GTX if perhaps one does come out.

I'm guessing this all depends on how good the new GTS will be and how much better it is compared to the GTX.
