My first mod: Alienware

Alright, see that's better. And the reason it's better is that you obviously learned something from that project......

And again, I'm not trying to be a dick, but I bet you were pretty proud of yourself right after you finished up your drawer mod, right? How would you have felt if almost everyone that saw your work log essentially called you a fucking idiot because of the obvious impracticality of such a mod? Just because you have already learned the lessons that the OP may be learning right now does not mean it's cool to bash him... that's all I'm saying, and honestly, I don't think it really matters anyhow, as this is a rater old thread that the OP has not responded to in quite a while...

And regardless.... he does have a pretty respectable o/c, all things considered....

lol.... FANS lots of fans. Why not use slower RPM 120mm fans? That must be so loud and the airflow must be a mess.

As long as you like it then well done.

You have the money to blow on this overpriced PC... At least blow couple more dough for more effective and practical solution.

If this was for shit and giggle... I would laugh about it but you are serious about this solution...

FAIL!

My rig A64 3000+ 1.8ghz at 2.54ghz all air. Dead quiet and practical.

My rigs pwn yours . . .I think this guy did ok. Learn about watercooling n00b. Having a fat girl at home would be practical . . .I still would not do it. You = fail!!!

I learned a lot about variety method to cool computers... I choose to go the path I used. Why go water when it already reached the mainboard max using air. I could push it further but that would require modding the mainboard which I obviously choose not to.

*shrugs* No matter.. that set up of his wont last. More trouble than it's worth.

submit it to maxpc. They have monthly mod contests and the winner gets 500 bones for their time.

Maybe if you read through the whole thread you would find I posted the hyperlink to my drawer mod thread...

I'm not trying to be special.. I just know it's impractical because I've done something before and it was a pain in the ass... I can see he'll have the same problem. As for the zip tie clipping...That wont mess up the air flow... I don't have window on my case so who the hell care.

I give you an A+ for originality on the idea but you could have done much more with it . . .but then I don't know anything about modding . . .

I like it... I've done the same thing (with not quite so many fans) myself on several systems. For some of us, the point of modding is not to wind up with something "nice," but to take what we have, and figure out a way to improve whatever aspect of it is important to us. That's what the OP did. The top vent was a good idea, IMO.

It's not bad for a first mod, and before you go and take the bashing on your rig to heart, there are way more rough looking mods on these boards. I do however agree with the "could have used 120mm fans" camp, that 80 mm fan setup has to be as loud as a tornado without the benefit of the airflow. On a side note are all the upper fans pulling air from the lower cut outs?

and for the calling for commenter's to show pics of their rigs....

it's the red one.

Thank you for the support and the criticism.
I do have a few responses to the general comments

1. i chose the 80mms because i wanted 2 fans blowing in and 1 fan sucking air out.
also, the height for the mod would have been changed because it would have been only 240mm tall as opposed to the 320mm that i could achieve with the 80mm's. the extra height gave it a perfect fit.

2. Yes the mod was rough. it was my first time ever doing a mod. All i had was a dremel and ruler so my straight edges were not perfect.

3. Noise was never a problem. While it was loud, i never had a problem with noise levels. many of the fans were connected to controllers and i could turn down the fans if needed but i never once felt it was "too loud".

I never claimed this to be the be all end all of mods. Its an alienware case that got chopped up for functionality and allowed me to drop my temps 8-9 C. nothing more nothing less.

DB pwns 99.8% of modders in this forum, and thats fact, some of his mods are not just mods but pieces of art, ok their is the odd modder who has produced magic mods, the person who did the doom 3 mod springs to mind but for truly outstanding mods DB is the man and is up their with the best of them.

As for Shazza, her first ( I think ) Homemade pc puts a shitload of peoples mods to shame in this forum, and the truly cool thing about her mod is not the fact that she is female, but she is a mature professional female who has only very recently got into modding and has did a uber magic job on her very first homebuilt watercooled beauty and she would put alot of longtime modders to shame with her new rig, it is really nice especially when you realise she has never built a pc before a month or so ago, she really did an amazing job on her new rig and is to be congratulated.

If you want to see DB's and Shazza's work then head on over to www.alienwareniche.com or you can just google for Darthbeavis and you will instantly get a good few thousand hits regarding his mods, his latest one is wtf leet.

www.alienwareniche.com is an alienware forum where anything goes and some great pc's and mods can be seen.

Might want to contact the owner of that site about that database error there.

Yea, I just tried to go their myself, I think that is the very first time that I have seen a DB error on his site, but no doubt it will be fixed today as the dude who runs the site has his head screwed on and doesnt take long to fix problems once notified.

cheers for posting about tho ;)

and ES . . .thanks for the props my sheep shagging brother ;) wait, i did not mean that to sound like I shag sheep . . .

to have the will to try something new, no matter what the final outcome, is nothing to laugh at or criticize for...experience starts somewhere

sooo umm, I'm assuming that the wall of fans are set up for "Intake".

If so, it does no good if you don't have the same amount of exhaust to get that air out.....
