ATI HD3870 3dmark06 / crisis demo benchmarks

Awfully slow in Crysis (slower then a GT).

AA seems to have been improved somewhat !

And it may be a hair cheaper then a GT.

Slower by 2FPS in GT at same performance levels so it is a tad slower

Impressive CF scores though, wonder how CF scales in Crysis (does it even work?)?

Also, interesting to see that AA actually shows less of a drop in SM3.0 than it does for the 8800GT, so AA might have been fixed after all.

This thing should clock better than an 8800GT given the 55nm advantage and better RAM (GDDR4) so we might see some impressive clocks on this thing. Also, if they do get Tri-Fire and Quad-Fire out, it might be some pretty impressive performance if driver support is good. Finally, some real competition!

Takes up 2 slots too.

2 slots is fine considering it runs many degrees cooler and a lot of GT users are looking for aftermarket cooling already.

Will be interesting to see though if ATI does a hard launch or a paper launch. Considering GT stocks seem very low and hard to get by retailers, if ATI does a hard launch they can steal a lot of sales.

Plus, 4X is ok to run CF.

is that true? im kinda disappointed if these are the final specs, i was hoping amd/ati would take the lead back.

What is true?

PCIe 4x has alwasy been able to run CF if the board permits it... for the most part, it doesn't seem to hurt scaling as much as SLI does for whatever reason.

Interesting to see they say that ATI has better image quality than the 8800GT in Crysis. Maybe all that talk about the water "cheating" issue might be true after all.. we'll see with new driver revisions hopefully!

I want to know how it's supposed to support quad crossfire in RD790. Currently it's physically impossible to put 4 dual slot cards in a motherboard and none of the RD790 boards have a true staggard setup slot setup even if you found a case that allowed it.

lol take the lead back with the same card? this is essentialy a 2900XT with a die shrink. ATI just wanted to get of the 2900 name because it has such a bad rep. i hope they didn't put to much effort into this card and have the next one lined up, cause nvidia 9800 looks really nice on paper so far.

CF performance does look nice though, if this card is cheaper or around the same price as a 8800GT id probiably get it in CF, its to late for just a single card as you can see with games like crysis and stuff comming out now.

And see that the +2 fps advantage that the 8800GT is due to Nvidia's driver optimizations that are so NOT worth it!

7% gains shown on http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=487&Itemid=29 due to Nvidia cheating (simply change the .exe file name and you'll see).

When factoring in the IQ, it seems that the 3870 is the true winner. Even if the 3870 is still roughly 10% slower, that could be compensated by even greater overclocks (hopefully) than on 8800GT.

its good to see that the HD3870 can compete with the 8800GT but its one game as of right now. if the trend continues with other games, AMD/ATI will have a great card on their hands and at lower price than the 8800GT.

Might want to stop spewing BS.

idn looks good to me. It would have been nice to have sli on intel boards. But I refuse to use nvidia chipsets, so crossfire is looking good to me.

I want to know what the settings are for the HD3870 Crysis benchmark.

I get 39 FPS at that resolution with everything on high and no AA. (With Core 2 and 8800 GT)

The settings must be set to Very High in DX10 or something.

Even the Elite Bastards review has the 8800 GT pulling 32 FPS at that resolution in DX10 in Vista.

According to the IAX Tech review, the 3870 only pulls 14-15 FPS and the 8800 GT 16-17 FPS?

Unless I missed something...

I'd rather buy a 8800 Card simply because ATi's drivers are total crap. I uninstalled their 7.10 drivers and it totally botched my Vista install.

That benchmarking is messed up somehow. I've seen higher scores on the GPU benchmark than that on an 8800GT

No way it runs that slow at 12x10 with no AA lol.

Noticed the min FPS on the 8800GT was 0.40 FPS i think versus 9. something?

Anywho, we'll see more leaks soon. The reviewer actually has a pretty good rep in the benching arena so its not likely he's making this up anyways.

Do you know when that'll be available for download on Nvidia's website? I still see the .04s right now.

They probably won't release that. Instead it will probably be a few versions newer than what Brent has.

Yeah, the confidental 169.05's are probably just to keep HardOCP editors quiet and happy. Ha hahahhahhahha!

Well, we should be expecting new WHQL drivers, hopefully, on the day that Crysis officially hits the stores. I think in a few days, at least, seeing how some have already started downloading the full version of Crysis. That's Nvidia's promise--full SLI support for 8800 cards in DX10 mode, probably in Vista 64 or whatever shrewd condition Nvidia is relying upon.

Denny says runs were done in: vista 32bit, 1280x1024. very high

So I guess DX10 and all that jazz is on, would make the fps about right

Those benches for the 8800GT look porked. My 8800GT scores at lowest 20FPS while averaging 35-40, peak is at 45-48 with Crysis on HIGH / 1280. Tested with vista x64 and XP, xp's benches were 5-10 FPS faster on same driver ver. It still gives a good idea of comparison though, but they did seem really low, at least for the GT heh.

'We found ATi HD3870 is actually has better picture process while Crysis benching.

Specially the light refraction from water, HD3870 is very smooth but 8800GT is not. It is around frame 500 to 1000.'

interesting

Can't wait! 2x3870 Crossfire (X38) and Crysis 1280x1024 4/16 dx 10 flawlessly.. I so hope.

For what it's worth; word has it that the MSI K9A2 Platinum can fit 4 double-wides. Looks like it would make it... barely.

You did NOT say that! Too f*ing funny! :D

you guys gotta remember, these are very early drivers for this core. Its impressive that its even stable, imho.

Also note that he says image quality and rendering is visibly better on the 3870. This may be due to those rumored optimizations or simple driver bugs with the demo for Nvidia.

funny thing is that nvidia was the one who worked with crytek from beginning :D

on the other hand that reviewer does come off like he really wants ATI to do well this round --as we all do. The markets going to stagnate (infact it already is) if Nvidia keeps dominating.

Ahhhh I loved the good old X1800/X1900s vs the 7800/7900 days. There was rarly a clear cut winner in those days, and there was always an Nvidia fanboy which jumped in on the conversation and got the sh!t ridiculed out of him :D

then the 7950GX2 came out, cept it was a really ugly card, but everyone wanted to love it anyways, lol. "oh yeah well of course an X1950XTX will outperform it in that scenario, you need really high res and AA for the 7950GX2 to shine". I heard that ALLOOOTTTT. then I found it on NV's frontpage >:)

only if you have a case which can fit the bottem one. IMHO thats the best layout but requires a case with room below the last pci-e slot and will require use of a dremel to make the 2nd peak on the aluminum back-plate fit. (dont bother trying to understand that if you dont just, keep in mind you will need to do some modifications to make it fit).

Oh yes, good rep. I remember some guy with some "awesome" rep - IIRC his nick was Gibbo or something like that - when R600 was released, that published his own review, where the HD 2900 XT beat the Ultra in every game, while generating less heat, consuming less power and being quieter...

As to this performance preview, I can't really comment on the results of the HD 3870, but the scores for the 8800 GT are really low, especially when loads of sites, [H] and Tech-Report included, show the GT, doing much better.
